Mike Bone - The Trail to Endurance

When the terrain changes in life and business, lessons from the trail can keep you strong, energized, focused, and productive!  The podcast episode features Dr. Elisa Magill interviewing Mike Bone, owner and president of Spectrum Sports Management and race director for the Run Catalina events. Mike shares how Catalina Island's unique environment, tight-knit community, and challenging terrain make its endurance races deeply meaningful for participants. He describes the island as a "special place" that has drawn him back for 30 years, noting both its beauty and the logistical complexity of hosting events there. The conversation highlights how the endurance industry navigated COVID‑19, including the formation of the California Coalition of Endurance Sports to advocate for reopening and support the financial and charitable impact of races statewide. Mike also recounts memorable participant stories - from runners who have completed the Catalina events for 45 consecutive years to individuals overcoming personal challenges, weathering difficult conditions, or even running while pregnant. Throughout the discussion, both Elisa and Mike emphasize the transformative power of endurance sports for leaders, entrepreneurs, and everyday participants. They reflect on the camaraderie, resilience, and personal growth that come from trail running, as well as the community spirit of Catalina's residents and nonprofits who support the races. Mike explains the differences between trail and road running, the sustainability ethos of trail culture, and the joy his team finds in creating life‑changing experiences for runners. The episode closes with encouragement for leaders to stay active as part of their professional and personal well‑being, and with Elisa expressing gratitude for the race team's work as she prepares to run the Catalina Marathon herself. Jason Freeman - Breaking Barriers to Live Your True Potential

Dr. Elisa Magill interviews author and podcaster Jason Freeman and discusses his personal journey of overcoming a speech impediment and coordination issues, finding his purpose in inspiring others, and the importance of perseverance in achieving long-term goals. They highlighted the need for self-compassion and avoiding instant gratification. They also emphasized the transformative power of yoga in fostering physical and mental flexibility. Later, they discussed the importance of having a 'marathon mindset' in life and work, setting realistic and achievable goals, and the need for replenishment and reenergizing. They highlighted the significance of learning from mistakes and everyone's immense potential. Jason Freeman is a notable speaker who invites his audiences to explore powerful perspectives on performance and resilience by embracing their individual uniqueness, repurposing mistakes and demonstrating how to navigate through challenges with greater confidence and creativity.  He inspires courageousness in the face of a rapidly changing world.   Jason's presentation style is a dynamic hybrid of an outlined presentation (complete with PowerPoint slides from an award-winning graphic designer) and spontaneous co-creation with the audience to keep content fresh and address their individual needs.  He brings a witty sense of clean humor and an infectious atmosphere of fun.  Jason is also a bit of an enigma because he has a pronounced speech impediment as the result of a birth injury which only heightens his ability to communicate and resonate with his audiences, often for years to come.   Beyond the speaking jazz, Jason is a podcaster, a coach, an avid writer, and a voracious photographer.  His book is entitled "Awkwardly Awesome: Embracing My Imperfect Best". Welcome to the Endurance in Leadership Podcast!

Hello everyone and welcome to the Endurance in Leadership Podcast! Have you ever wondered what makes the difference between those who are successful in life and those who fall short and give up? Or… how about that leader who inspires others and builds momentum, energy, and endurance in all that they do? This is what we will be talking about… that unique factor that creates a legacy leadership model. That unique factor that helps successful leaders move from "grit to great!" That unique factor that helps them move forward despite setbacks. Tune in to hear from a variety of resilient and inspiring leaders on their stories of moving forward despite obstacles, or their proven tips/tools to endure and thrive. Interviews will include all types of leaders, from solopreneurs to bustling corporate leaders. In the end, the mindset is the same… they are innovative, out-of-the-box thinkers and creative collaborators. The point? In life, everything moves in waves… water, sound, light, energy, etc. It's how we perceive these waves, and what we do to ride the wave that matters. It's how we ride it that determines whether we sink, swim, or sail. So… tune in to listen and learn from some amazing, resilient leaders! When I am not interviewing, I will be discussing brief "Science Bites" with thoughts on how to apply these points in your life and business. I look forward to sharing with you both now and into the future!
