Episode 110 "I'll Make Him Pay the Check"

Welcome to the Love Sweetie Podcast!  In this episode, Sweetie writes about what was occurring at her home in Doylestown in late April and early May 1952.  Specifically, her sister-in-law, Elizabeth, goes on vacation for two weeks to Florida while her husband is at a newspaperman's convention, leaving her mother (Sweetie's mother-in-law) to take care of her three young children alone in Norristown.  Sweetie goes to Norristown to help the family, and then returns home and attempts to get some more work done on her property in Doylestown.  Notably, Sweetie and Lew continue with their work filling up a big well which had been a hazard on their property, much to the annoyance of Miss Darst, who makes her opinions known. In this episode, we also discuss the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement with the work that was done by President Harry Truman, after it is noted that Sweetie's brother-in-law, Joe, the actor, is working on a film on a related subject. At the end of the episode, we get to also hear two poems that Sweetie added to the end of her letter. Check out the website at www.lovesweetiepodcast.com for the family tree, overall timeline of her story, and information on the previous episodes to catch up as you are able to - there is something in Sweetie's story for everyone! Welcome to the Love Sweetie Podcast!  In this episode, Sweetie answers questions from her family in the first letter and in the second letter, we learn that her son, Lewis, had the measles during Easter 1952.  Additionally, we review a penny postal card that Sweetie's father, Chester Demaree, M.D., sent to her sister, Jeanne, and examine his unique handwriting, as well as the postmark and stamps on the postcard itself. Episode 107 "Ain't Nothin' Like A Daffydil"

Welcome to the Love Sweetie Podcast!  In this episode, we review two letters that Sweetie wrote in early April 1952.  In these letters, she comments about some of the work that she is doing around the house (including fighting more poison ivy on her property), notes information about a car accident that happened on Main Street., and while she is relieved that her father, Chester Demaree, M.D., is recovered from his health issues of the previous weeks, she is wondering why he is insisting on traveling again to the western part of the United States.  She wants her parents to come visit her and her family in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.   Finally, at the end of the episode, we get to hear a poem that Sweetie wrote (it had been included with the second of the two letters). Episode 106: A Blue Million Little Maple Shoots

Welcome to the Love Sweetie Podcast!  In this episode, we review four pieces of correspondence from March 1952 - we start with two letters from Sweetie to her family, and then two messages from her father, Chester Demaree, M.D., follow.  In the first two letters, Sweetie is clearly trying to convince her father, who was seriously ill in the preceding weeks, to stay in Des Moines with her sister and her brother-in-law, while also telling stories about what is happening in Doylestown.  She also details her ongoing battle with her own property and the poison ivy that she is trying to remove.  In the last two pieces of correspondence of this episode, we learn that Chester has disregarded both his own and others' advice, and returned home to Lacona.  He also goes back to work as the town doctor as soon as he returns. Episode 105: Please Hold for the Night Shift

Welcome to the Love Sweetie Podcast!  In this episode, we review four pieces of correspondence from March 1952 - we start with two messages from Sweetie's father, Chester Demaree, M.D., in Lacona, Iowa, and then we continue with Sweetie's narrative on March 20, 1952.  The first letter is her family circular in which she notes what's been happening in Doylestown at home.  However, it is in the second letter (written on the same day) that we realize that the situation in Iowa with regards to her father's health is very bad, as she writes a secret letter to her brother-in-law, Glen, and her sister, Jeanne, in Des Moines with instructions of what should be done if their father, Chester, might pass away due to the serious issue with his health. Also, please note that this episode is dedicated to James "Jim" Cassidy, Andrew Cassidy's father.  (Andrew has been the narrator for the letters from Sweetie's husband, Lew, since the beginning of the podcast.)  We are sad to note that his father, Jim, passed away on April 29, 2026.  Jim was very much a lover of history, and he will be missed.  Thoughts and prayers to Andrew in this difficult time. Episode 104: I Could Just Hear the Neighbors Snickering

Welcome to the Love Sweetie Podcast!  In this episode, we review three of Sweetie's letters from March 1952 that she wrote in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.   Increasingly, Sweetie is becoming concerned with her father's health - that he is suffering from a medical issue in regards to his heart - and she is stressed that she cannot be there in Iowa to keep an eye on him.  So she writes three days in a row to her family.  The third letter is sent specifically to her sister Jeanne and her brother Frank (and their significant others), with a request that everyone communicate as much as possible regarding updates. Despite her worry about her father, she provides updates on her life in Doylestown, including some more drama with Miss Darst. In this episode, we also look back at the famous "Trial of the Century" - the Lindbergh Kidnapping - as Sweetie writes her thoughts about the family of the kidnapper in 1952, 20 years after the crime was committed in 1932. Episode 103: Address the Envelopes and Get Them Hatched

Welcome to the Love Sweetie Podcast!  In this episode, we review three letters from February and March 1952 - two are from Sweetie's father, Chester Demaree, M.D., who is writing from Iowa, and the third is from Sweetie, who is writing from Doylestown.  Sweetie writes an update regarding her health and recounts a tale that she hears from Lew about something that happened at the Naval base (NAS Willow Grove).  She then notes they acquired a camera at an antique sale and seem to have made a very good deal.  In Chester's letters, we learn about the "Twins" contest that the Des Moines Register had in early 1952 and then Chester indicates that there's an article he's going to forward that will help in making a child a genius.  We review the content of the Des Moines Register from that year to review what Chester is writing about.
