You Are Your Marketing Series w/ Melanie Whittaker - Part 3 - 09/13/2026

PR consultant Melanie Whittaker joins Dr. FLOW for a candid conversation about what makes a story media-worthy, why authenticity matters more than self-promotion, and how to build visibility that leads people into genuine community. There is a question every artist, entrepreneur, creative, coach, speaker, and visionary who wants greater visibility eventually has to answer: Why should anybody talk about you? Not: Are you talented? Not: Did you launch something? Not: Do you have a business, book, podcast, single, program, event, or offer? And not even: Do you deserve more attention? The question is: Why should a journalist, podcast host, producer, publication, television program—or the people they serve—stop what they are doing and care about your story right now? That is the question at the center of Episode 3 of You Are Your Marketing, my ongoing conversation with PR consultant Melanie Whittaker. And this conversation went somewhere much deeper than publicity. Your Announcement Is Not Necessarily Your Story “I launched my business.” “I released my new single.” “My book is coming out.” “I have a new program.” Those things matter—but they are announcements. The story often lives underneath them. Melanie explained that when someone approaches her wanting PR, one of the first things she needs to understand is why they want publicity now and where they ultimately want it to take them. Someone may initially want publicity for a book launch, for example, but perhaps the larger vision includes public speaking, touring, building a community, or developing an entirely new platform. That bigger vision changes the strategy. Before chasing interviews, features, podcasts, or press coverage, we need to know what all of that visibility is supposed to build. Your Visibility Has to Match Your Vision One of the strongest points Melanie made during our conversation was that publicity cannot exist separately from the rest of your brand. Imagine hearing someone give an extraordinary interview. You connect with their story. You are intrigued by their work. You immediately search for them. Then you arrive at their website or social media and think: Wait…is this the same person? That disconnect matters. The interview may have gotten someone’s attention, but everything that happens afterward determines whether that attention becomes trust, relationship, community, or business. Your website, messaging, social presence, offers, story, and public appearances should increasingly tell the same story. Visibility magnifies what is already there. Your Story May Be More Interesting Than You Think One of the reasons people struggle with PR is surprisingly simple: We are often too close to our own lives to recognize what is interesting about them. You know what happened to you. You know where you came from. You know why you created the thing you created. You know the failures, pivots, heartbreaks, discoveries, ridiculous moments, impossible decisions, and unexpected turns that got you here. Because you’ve lived with those experiences, they can feel ordinary. To somebody else, they may be the reason they finally pay attention. That is part of the work Melanie described: talking deeply with a client, sometimes going all the way back to childhood, and finding the pieces that create a compelling larger narrative. The product might open the door. The human story gives people a reason to stay. Genuine. Trust. Humanity. When I asked Melanie for some of the ingredients that can move an ordinary announcement toward something people actually care about, our conversation landed on three powerful ideas: Genuine. Trust. Humanity. People are surrounded by marketing. They know when they’re being sold to. They know when somebody appears to be performing a version of themselves because they believe it is what the internet wants. And increasingly, people are looking for something else. They want to know: Who are you? What do you actually believe? Do you care about the people you’re trying to reach? Can I trust you? Is there a human being underneath all this marketing? The strongest visibility doesn’t simply make people aware of you. It helps people understand you. And understanding creates the possibility of trust. Read the Room We also talked about something that can easily be forgotten when you’re excited about promoting your work: Timing matters. You can have a compelling story and still introduce it at the wrong moment. Effective PR requires awareness of what people are currently discussing, experiencing, questioning, celebrating, grieving, resisting, or trying to understand. That doesn’t mean exploiting every headline. It means understanding that communication does not happen in a vacuum. You are entering a conversation that is already happening. So instead of only asking: “What do I want people to hear?” Try asking: “What conversation is happening right now, and what do I genuinely have to contribute to it?” That is a very different approach to visibility. Telling the Truth Requires Emotional Resilience This may have been one of the most important parts of our conversation. Being authentic does not mean telling the entire internet everything that has ever happened to you. Some stories are yours to keep. Some stories are yours to tell later. Some stories may eventually become central to your work. Before sharing something deeply personal publicly, Melanie suggested asking yourself whether you have the emotional resilience to handle people interpreting that story differently than you intended. Because once your visibility increases, so does the possibility of disagreement. Someone may misunderstand you. Someone may unsubscribe. Someone may criticize you. Someone may decide you aren’t for them. And that cannot always become the reason you abandon your truth. At the same time, you don’t owe the public access to a story you aren’t ready to carry publicly. You get to decide when your story is ready to become part of your public work. PR Is Not About Getting Everybody to Like You There is a significant difference between visibility and approval. You can spend enormous amounts of energy trying to become universally acceptable—or you can become increasingly clear about who you are, what you believe, who you serve, and what you contribute. The second path may cost you some people. It may also help the right people recognize you much faster. You do not need everybody. You need alignment. You need people who understand what you are building and genuinely want to participate in it. Where Are You Sending Everybody? This conversation eventually arrived at a question I think every person building an audience should answer: If your visibility works, where do the people go? Suppose the interview works. Suppose the article gets published. Suppose the podcast takes off. Suppose the Reel goes viral. Suppose thousands of people discover you. Then what? Melanie emphasized the importance of having somewhere to bring those people—and then having a plan for nurturing the relationship once they arrive. That could be an email list. A membership. A Substack. A WhatsApp community. A program. A conversation. An event. A call. A gathering. The platform matters less than the principle: Attention needs somewhere to become relationship. We May Be Entering the Age of Belonging Toward the end of the conversation, we found ourselves talking about something much larger than PR. Community. For years, much of online marketing has revolved around broadcasting. Post. Promote. Perform. Grow. Optimize. Repeat. But people are tired. Many are craving actual conversation, smaller communities, meaningful gatherings, and places where they feel known rather than counted. Melanie compared it to walking into a house party. Sometimes you enter a room and immediately know: I don’t belong here. Then there are those rare spaces where you walk through the door and almost instantly think: These are my people. That is what we should be thinking about when we build communities around our work. Not simply: How many people can I attract? But: What does it feel like when someone arrives? Your Job Isn’t to Become Louder I closed this episode with something I want to leave with you, too: Your job isn’t to become louder than everybody else. Your job is to become clearer. More relevant. More useful. More prepared. Easier to understand. Your story matters. But the goal isn’t simply to convince the world to look at you. The greater opportunity is to understand what conversation you are uniquely equipped to contribute to—and then have the courage to show up and contribute. That is marketing. That is storytelling. That is visibility. And increasingly, I believe that is how we find our people. You Are Your Marketing Series w/ Melanie Whittaker - Part 2 - 08/30/2026

What do people believe about you when your name enters a room before you do? In this installment of You Are Your Marketing, I’m joined again by PR consultant Melanie Whittaker for a powerful conversation about what personal branding actually means beyond logos, colors, websites, professional photos, and perfectly curated social media. We talk about building a reputation people can trust, finding your own voice instead of copying what works for everyone else, developing the courage to be visible before everything feels “perfect,” and understanding that the way you engage with people online is just as much a part of your brand as the content you publish. We also get into authenticity, vulnerability, trolls, networking, referrals, perfectionism, self-care, emotional resilience, and the importance of becoming clear enough about who you are and what you do that other people can confidently tell your story when you’re not in the room. One of the biggest reminders from this conversation: Your reputation may be your most valuable marketing asset. People are paying attention not only to what you post, but to how you communicate, how you treat people, what you stand for, what you refuse to compromise, and whether the person they encounter online matches the person they eventually meet. And if you’ve been waiting for the better photos, the redesigned website, another certification, the perfect bio, the perfect body, the perfect equipment, or the perfect moment before allowing yourself to be seen, this conversation is especially for you. You do not have to become someone else to build a powerful personal brand. You have to become increasingly clear, courageous, and consistent about being you. 🎧 Watch or listen to the replay, then give yourself this assignment: Google yourself. Visit your website. Look through your social media. Read your bio. Review your last ten posts. Then ask: If I knew nothing about this person, what would I believe about them based on what I see? And then ask the harder question: Is that what I want to be known for? Keep building your reputation. Keep telling your story. Keep allowing the right people to find you. LIA Global Consciousness Exchange - Featuring Andrea Inojosa - 08/25/2026

What happens when life breaks open the version of you that you thought you knew? In this deeply personal conversation from Love In Action Network, I sit down with holistic healer Andrea Inojosa for an honest exploration of grief, trauma, survival mode, self-forgiveness, spirituality, and the long journey back home to yourself. Andrea shares how divorce, her daughter’s mental health crisis, profound financial loss, and seasons of rebuilding ultimately led her deeper into healing work and a life centered on helping others rediscover safety, peace, and self-love. We also explore energy healing, Reiki, meditation, breathwork, movement, and the importance of actually allowing ourselves to feel what we have survived rather than simply becoming highly functional around our pain. Andrea’s story is a powerful reminder that healing does not require becoming an entirely different person. Sometimes it is the slow, courageous work of returning to the person underneath the protection, shame, expectations, and survival mechanisms. Perhaps the greatest invitation from this conversation is simple: stop waiting for someone else’s approval to become fully yourself. Love yourself deeply. Honor what you have survived. Allow yourself to evolve. And remember that even after extraordinary loss, there can still be light, purpose, peace, gratitude, and another way forward. You are loved. You are lovable. And wherever you are on your healing journey, you are still allowed to come home to yourself. 🎙️ A Love In Action Network Conversation with Dr. Flow & Andrea Inojosa A Call to the Loved and Lovable Community Dr. Flow and an extraordinary team of collaborators are devoted to healing, inspiring, and uplifting our global community.
