Spurs Answering Big Questions This Preseason: Will the 3-guard Lineup work?

Three games into the preseason, the San Antonio Spurs have already shown us quite a lot about what we can expect from them this year. Victor Wembanyama is playing with the ball in his hands, and Dylan Harper looks even stronger and smoother than he did as a breakout rookie last season. The Spurs seem intent on starting the three-guard lineup of Harper, De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, but Fox hasn’t played yet and newly-acquired wing Tobias Harris is also on the shelf with an injury. As San Antonio uses the preseason to evaluate talent up and down the roster, we’re seeing good signs from veterans like Harrison Barnes and Julian Champagnie as well as flashes of potential from rookies like Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Tarris Reed Jr.Hosts Tom Petrini, Aaron Blackerby and Zach Montana break down the biggest storylines of the preseason so far, and what it all means for the Spurs as they get ready to start the 2026-27 campaign. Is the three-guard lineup really happening, and how will it work? What’s the best version of Wemby? What role players are popping the most?

Inside Spurs Media Day as Wemby Sets High Bar. Can they exceed last year's expectations?

The San Antonio Spurs are almost back to basketball, and at Media Day the players spoke to the press for the first time since their unexpected run to the NBA Finals ended in agony. Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle and Mitch Johnson all spoke about how they processed the latest chapter in their journey as a team after a summer of reflection.Hosts Tom Petrini, Aaron Blackerby and Zach Montana all made it out to the Victory Capital Performance Center for a first look at these familiar Spurs who have grown a lot.Wemby is the 2K cover athlete, the easy MVP favorite, the face of the league soon if he isn’t already, and he is. He spoke about how the wound from the Finals still hasn’t closed, and how the bar is even higher this year. We asked him about starting this season as a title contender, with the target squarely on this team’s back.Tobias Harris is the new addition to the roster, and in his first appearance before San Antonio’s assembled media he broke down how he fits and why he came: to win a title.Dylan Harper is a huge talent who could start for most teams, and he made some waves in a brand new GQ story where he joked (or serioused) about wanting to start. Harper spoke about his ambitions and competitive edge, and everyone from him to De’Aaron Fox and Mitch Johnson seem to agree it’s all a good problem to have.

Will the free agent forward start in place of Julian Champagnie or come off the bench? Does he remind you more of Keldon Johnson or Rudy Gay? And how do we grade the moves of Spurs GM Brian Wright? Plus, Tommy Vegas takes us courtside at Summer League with up-close thoughts on rising sophomore Carter Bryant and this year’s draft picks in Tarris Reed Jr., Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Maliq Brown. Inside Spurs' Draft, Kawhi Rumors, and San Antonio's Free Agency Targets

The Spurs and the brave podcasters who cover them have barely had time to recover from San Antonio's run to the NBA Finals, and the offseason is already in full swing. What moves will the Spurs make this summer to turn this contender into a champion?Hosts Tom Petrini and Zach Montana break down the draft haul for San Antonio, and what they could accomplish via the trade market and/or free agency. Will the rumors of a Kawhi Leonard reunion amount to anything? We spoke to GM Brian Wright after the first round of the 2026 draft, where his war room selected two very different big-man prospects in Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed Jr. In the second round, they grabbed Ja'Kobi Gillespie and Maliq Brown. With the center position squared away, it seems likely San Antonio will look to bring in a forward. Former Spur Sandro Mamukelashvili could be available, and John Collins and Rui Hachimura have both been reportedly linked to San Antonio. Tobias Harris could be in the cards, but what about LeBron James, who at 41 could be the LeBron James of Tobias Harrises? And then fine, we'll talk about the Kawhi Leonard stuff.
