Marvel & DC Cover Artist: AI Art Is "Stolen Valor" | David Nakayama

"You're not an AI artist. You asked a machine to steal stuff on your behalf." That's David Nakayama, and he didn't soften it one bit. This is the guy who's been on Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn covers for over two years straight, did 18 issues of Catwoman, and spent last year doing Rogue, Emma Frost and Magik back to back. He calls AI art stolen valor. He'll never buy it, never support it. Not in comics, not in music, not in voice acting. Any of it. Then he flips it on us. Photoshop already made real, hand-drawn pages rarer, and rarer made them worth more. David thinks AI does that again, only harder: fewer people who can actually pull it off, less supply, more demand, and original art prices go way up. And if you still think a machine has a shot: "Show me a substitute for Adam Hughes or J. Scott Campbell. No way. Not even close." David's been on the show before, way back early in our run. This time he's calling in from Hawaii and we're working through a stack of fan questions. He tells us why Kyle Rayner was always his Green Lantern (he recently got to work on Kyle's costume redesign), and how Lanterns went from "no one's flying around in space" to his must-watch show by episode three. Uncle Black asks him to dream up a brand-new Lantern Corps, and David says the color spectrum's been mined out. Blackest Night is his favorite GL story ever, but more colors just means diminishing returns. GL needs a completely new angle. Uncle Black is also officially Magneto'd out and wants Mr. Sinister for the next X-Men movie. David's in. Then the stuff you don't usually hear from artists. He doesn't keep a sketchbook, and he's a little embarrassed about it, because "the work is the fun part." The cover he swore was his best ever? Flopped. The one he shrugged at? Everybody loved it. So now he lets the fans tell him what's good. 18-year-old David had a plan to be Jim Lee one day. What he got first was a lot of lean years, and he hasn't forgotten them. He's also got his own book outlined, characters and all. Release date? "I'll see you in 2032." Our favorite story: a Hero Initiative jam piece shows up by FedEx with J. Scott Campbell's Rogue already on one half, and David has to add Psylocke to the other half without wrecking it. He holds it up to the light. Not a drop of WiteOut. "Not only is he that good, but he's effortlessly good. It's so unfair." (Adrian assumed WiteOut was a line item in every artist's monthly budget. David set him straight.) We also get into variants and foils, the four Bad Seeds covers he designed as spot foils from day one (Detective Comics #1114, Catwoman #92, Batwoman #8 and Nightwing #143, out Oct 21), his comic book Mount Rushmore (Jim Lee is Washington), how a kid who thought robots were too hard to draw ended up on Transformers covers, and Uncle Black dying on the hill that Hot Rod shot Optimus. David is not on that hill. He closes on a Harley Quinn tease he can't say anything about yet. Stay tuned. That Feel Fest shout-out mid-episode is about our Save Point tee, which supports Feel Fest.
