    TeaFlix Interview with Terry Crain

    Send us Fan Mail Terry Crain - whose fascination with The Beatles began on February 9, 1964, when he watched the group’s historic first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. That moment sparked a lifelong interest in The Beatles and the popular culture surrounding the British Invasion. Over the decades, his interest developed into detailed archival research into the business, licensing and collectibles that accompanied the group’s phenomenal rise in America. He is perhaps best known for NEMS and the Business of Selling Beatles Merchandise in the U.S. 1964–1966, an extensively illustrated study of the roughly 150 officially licensed Beatles products and promotions marketed in America during the height of Beatlemania. The book examines everything from dolls, toys and games to clothing, jewelry, wigs and other memorabilia, while also exploring how Brian Epstein’s NEMS organization handled the complicated business of Beatles licensing. The second edition contains hundreds of photographs and illustrations. Crain followed this with the ambitious Copyrighting The Beatles, a three-volume research project documenting more than 900 Beatles and Beatles-related copyrights from the mid-1960s.  His research uncovered an extraordinary range of material, including toys, games, artwork, photographs, cartoons, sculptures, sheet music, television material and hundreds of novelty recordings inspired by the group. In 2026, Crain expanded his research with Beatles Novelty Songs (1964–1966), a massive, graphically illustrated study devoted to nearly 500 novelty songs inspired by The Beatles. The approximately 650-page book investigates the performers, musicians, stories and musical styles behind these often forgotten recordings, which ranged from rock and country to jazz, polka, surf, ska, bluegrass, folk and spoken word. Before becoming a full-time researcher and author, Crain spent more than 35 years in education, including more than three decades at John A. Logan College in Illinois, where he served as Dean for Student Services. His background as an educator is reflected in the meticulous research and accessible storytelling of his Beatles work. Over the years, Crain has interviewed or encountered numerous figures connected with The Beatles and 1960s popular music, including Klaus Voormann, Astrid Kirchherr, Pattie Boyd, Louise Harrison, Billy Preston, Victor Spinetti, Tony Barrow, Alistair Taylor, Robert Freeman, Pete Best, Donovan, Gerry Marsden, Denny Laine, Joey Molland, Peter Noone, Ronnie Spector, Alan Parsons and members of The Quarrymen, among many others. Crain also co-hosts Beatles-related interview programs and manages several online communities devoted to Beatles memorabilia and 1960s music. Through his faBgear activities, he continues to research, document and preserve the fascinating artifacts and stories that demonstrate just how deeply Beatlemania penetrated everyday life and popular culture. In short: Terry Crain has carved out a distinctive place among Beatles historians by researching the things that existed beyond the records and concerts: the toys, souvenirs, copyrights, novelty songs and cultural ephemera that helped turn four musicians from Liverpool into a worldwide phenomenon. The newest book in the wild and wacky Beatles genre is "Beatles Novelty Songs (1964-1966)." Songwriters wrote about 500 Beatles novelty songs between 1964 and 1966. Every subject, every situation, every holiday, every heartfelt longing, and every social issue seemed to be covered by these wonderful songs. Even though they weren't dotting the charts, their power was unquestionable. Fact-filled and graphically rich, the 650+-page, 2" thick, 5-pound book chronologically lists each song with added information about who recorded them, who the musicians were, and other fun facts.  Since The Beatles were rock and roll, you'd think all the novelty songs were in that music genre. But you would be wrong. There were Beatles novelty records in the genres of American folk, British folk, foxtrot, jive, samba, bluegrass, doo-wop, country, rock & roll, big band, blues, jazz, orchestral, spoken-word, surf, ska, and polka!     Send us Fan Mail TeaFlix Interview with Henry Diltz Born Henry Stanford Diltz on September 6, 1938, in Kansas City, Missouri, he began his creative career not as a photographer but as a musician. Diltz was a member of the influential folk group The Modern Folk Quartet, commonly known as the MFQ. His transition into photography happened almost by accident when he bought a secondhand camera and began photographing his musician friends around Southern California. Living and working amid the flourishing Laurel Canyon music scene, Diltz found himself surrounded by artists who would become some of the biggest names in popular music. His relaxed, unobtrusive approach allowed him to photograph musicians as friends rather than celebrities, giving his work the intimate, natural quality that became his trademark. Over the course of his career, Diltz has photographed more than 250 album covers as well as thousands of publicity and documentary photographs. His subjects have included The Doors, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, the Eagles, America, The Monkees and David Cassidy, among many others. Among his most famous images is the photograph used for The Doors' 1970 album Morrison Hotel. Diltz photographed the band through the front window of the downtown Los Angeles hotel after the desk clerk, who had initially refused permission for a photo shoot, temporarily left the lobby. The resulting photograph became one of rock music's most enduring album covers. Other celebrated album covers photographed by Diltz include Crosby, Stills & Nash's self-titled debut album, James Taylor's Sweet Baby James, the Eagles' debut album and Desperado. Diltz was also the official photographer at the legendary Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969, documenting the performers, audience and extraordinary atmosphere of an event that became one of the defining moments of the counterculture era. His work also chronicled other major festivals and an extraordinary period in American music history. Unlike the carefully staged celebrity photography that later became commonplace, Diltz's best-known photographs often came from simply spending time with artists. His camera documented musicians rehearsing, travelling, relaxing at home, wandering through Laurel Canyon or preparing to perform. That informal "fly-on-the-wall" quality has made his photographic archive an invaluable visual history of the golden era of Southern California rock music. Diltz is also a co-founder of the Morrison Hotel Gallery, which became an important international showcase for fine-art music photography and represents the work of many of rock music's most significant photographers. His photographs have appeared in books, exhibitions, magazines and galleries around the world. His published collections include California Dreaming and Unpainted Faces, preserving many of his intimate portraits and behind-the-scenes photographs from decades spent among music's greatest artists. In 2023, Henry Diltz received the Abbey Road Music Photography Awards' Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his extraordinary contribution to music photography and his role in visually documenting generations of popular music history. More than six decades after first picking up a camera, Henry Diltz remains not simply a photographer of rock stars, but a participant in the history he documented. Because he was himself a musician and a trusted friend of many of his subjects, his photographs capture something unusual: the personalities behind the legends. Today, his archive stands as one of the great visual chronicles of modern popular music, documenting an era when Laurel Canyon, Woodstock and the emerging singer-songwriter movement helped transform American culture.     TeaFlix Interview with John Ferraro

    Send us Fan Mail John Ferraro is a highly respected Los Angeles-based drummer, percussionist and recording musician whose versatile career has encompassed pop, rock, jazz, R&B, country, big band, film, television and live theatrical performance. Born in Waterbury, Connecticut, Ferraro began playing drums at the age of five. Music was part of his upbringing, with a trumpet-playing father and a pianist mother. After his family relocated to Southern California, he developed his skills through school ensembles, marching bands, talent competitions and his own traditional jazz group. He later attended Orange Coast College and California State University, Long Beach, where he studied business administration while taking music performance classes and earning honors as an instrumentalist.  Ferraro’s first major professional engagement was performing at Disneyland as part of the entertainment created for the newly opened Space Mountain attraction. He subsequently became one of Southern California’s most dependable and adaptable professional drummers, equally comfortable supporting a vocalist, driving a jazz ensemble or bringing precision and energy to a large-scale concert production.  Among the highlights of his career was working with international superstar Barry Manilow. Ferraro performed on Manilow recordings, including tracks associated with the 1982 album Here Comes the Night, and travelled around the world as a member of Manilow’s touring ensemble. His combination of technical skill, musical sensitivity and disciplined showmanship made him ideally suited to Manilow’s sophisticated concert productions.  Ferraro also maintained an extensive musical relationship with Grammy Award-winning guitarist Larry Carlton, touring with him domestically and internationally over a period of approximately 18 years.     Send us Fan Mail Martin Nethercutt is a German-American entrepreneur, musician, and multimedia producer known for his diverse contributions to music, digital media, and creative branding. Early Life and Education Born in 1961 in Kassel, Germany, Martin grew up in a bilingual household with an American father and German mother. He graduated from Albert Schweitzer Schule in 1981, majoring in English and Political Science, and later completed studies in Business English and Social Economics in 1983. After completing his mandatory military service in 1986, he worked as a forwarding agent and customs broker in Munich, Germany. Music Career Martin’s passion for music led him to become a sought-after commercial singer and composer in the European music industry. He lent his voice to blockbuster films such as Fletch, Top Gun, and Beverly Hills Cop, working with renowned producer Harold Faltermeyer. His distinctive voice became recognizable in advertisements for brands like Burger King, Lufthansa, and Rothman’s Cigarettes. In the late 1980s, Martin collaborated with composer Michael Hofmann de Boer on the song “Into Paradise,” which gained attention after being featured in a 1991 German film and a 1996 BMW commercial. The song remained unidentified for years until it was rediscovered and confirmed in 2024. Multimedia and Business Ventures In 1997, Martin co-founded McCartney Multimedia, Inc. with his wife, Ruth McCartney. The company specializes in digital branding, web development, and multimedia production, serving clients ranging from Chefs and Musicians to small businesses and Fortune 500 companies. Martin also established McCartneyStudios.com in 2005 and McCartney Times at mccartney.com, a Beatles-focused news blog, in 2015. He continues to lead creative strategies and technological expansions for the McCartney brand and its clients. Over the last 2 decades, Martin has been working on these musical concept albums under the GEIST banner. While he was composing the songs and crafting the lyrics, it dawned on him that he was about to embark on a “spiritual Rock’n Roll journey” himself. The lyrics and melodies started to create their universe. All Martin had to do was capture it. The result was a classic rock masterpiece. After combining over 19,000 music files the first album "Book of Mirrors" was mixed by Niko Bolas at Capitol Records and mastered in Nashville by Richard Dodd. During the pandemic of 2020/21, Martin wrote and produced "The Book of Shadows", where we are introduced to the life and spiritual struggles of the protagonist, Martin Cole, and a cast of characters.     Send us Fan Mail Sandro Monetti is a British-born entertainment journalist, author, broadcaster, producer, playwright, and media personality who has built a distinguished career covering Hollywood from Los Angeles. Originally from Blackpool, England, he studied journalism at the University of Central Lancashire before beginning his career in British newspapers and magazines.
