    The Return of the Lord

Return to the Lord: A Wake-Up Call from Joel  Key Text: Joel 1–3 (Focus: Joel 2:13)  Theme: God uses crisis to call us back—not to punish, but to restore.  INTRODUCTION: A Nation in Crisis  The book of Joel opens with a national disaster: a plague of locusts. Everything was consumed—food, joy, livelihood, and hope. Joel made it clear—this was more than a natural disaster, it was a wake-up call. Today in America, we’re experiencing spiritual and moral famine—division, unrest, confusion, and loss of direction. God’s message through Joel is still the same today: Return to Me.  1. God Uses Crisis to Get Our Attention  Joel 1:4–7, 12  The locusts had destroyed everything—and left behind emptiness and sorrow. It wasn’t just an economic collapse; it was a spiritual one. We, too, have had seasons of loss—pandemics, natural disasters, political division, family breakdown, financial strain. And in these moments, God may be asking: “Are you listening?” “Have you turned back to Me?”  Reflection: What “locusts” have come into your life—eating up your peace, joy, or purpose?  2. God Doesn’t Want a Show—He Wants Our Hearts  Joel 2:12–13  In Joel’s day, people would tear their clothing as a sign of sorrow—but God said, “I want more than that—I want your heart.” God isn’t asking for outward performance—He’s looking for inward transformation. Many of us have been in church for years—but have we let our routines replace true relationship? It’s not too late to reignite the fire for God in your life.  Reflection: When was the last time you wept over your own sin or interceded for the brokenness of our nation?  3. When We Return, God Restores  Joel 2:25–26  God doesn’t just forgive—He restores. For those who feel like time has been lost—missed opportunities, broken relationships, spiritual dryness, or mistakes—God says, “I can still redeem it.” He is the God of new beginnings, even late in life.  Testimony Invitation: Think of times where God restored what seemed gone forever. Share. Encourage others.  4. God Still Pours Out His Spirit on All Flesh  Joel 2:28  The promise didn’t end in Acts 2—it’s still alive for us today. Age doesn’t disqualify us from being part of God’s movement. God has new dreams for older saints. He still wants to use your voice, your prayers, your wisdom, your passion.  Encouragement: Your best years in God’s presence don’t have to be behind you. They can still be ahead of you.  5. The Day of the Lord Is Coming  Joel 3:14  Joel closes with a serious message: Judgment is coming. Peter later says, “The day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.” The world has become numb to this reality, but the Word is clear: we will all stand before the Lord. Have we made the decision that counts most?  Personal Plea: We’ve made many decisions in life—career, family, finances... But have you made the eternal decision to follow Jesus fully?  CONCLUSION: A Call to Return  Joel 2:13 – “Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful...”  This isn’t a message of condemnation—it’s a call to come home. God is full of mercy. He’s waiting. Whether you’ve known Him for 50 years or feel like you’ve drifted... He’s calling you back today.

    Generational Legacy

GENERATIONAL LEGACY INTRODUCTION A generational legacy refers to the values, beliefs, traditions, and even material possessions being passed down from one generation to the next. It encompasses the enduring impact that past generations have on the present and future, shaping family identity, culture, and even societal structures. Essentially, it’s the inheritance – both tangible and intangible – that connects past, present and future family members. Here we will dive into what that looks like from a spiritual perspective as well as the rest. KEYS 1.    Values & Beliefs – core principles/beliefs that are instilled and reinforced across generations. (Deut 6:6-9. Deut 4:7-9, Prov. 22:6, Judges 2:10) 2.    Traditions & Cultures – specific customs and stories that are passed down, defining a family’s uniqueness. (Josh 4:5-7, 4:21-24) 3.    Emotional & Behavioral Patterns – the ways families interact, communicate, and handle challenges. (Gen 3, Gen 4:8, Prov 13:24, Luke 15:11-32, Eph 6:4, Heb 12:6) 4.    Influence on Identity & Purpose – a strong legacy can provide a sense of belonging, direction, and purpose for future generations. (Gen 2:18, Gen 17:7, Gen 26:24, Lev 11:44, Lev 18:3-5, Ex 9:16) RAHAB -       Prostitute (Josh 2:1) -       Hero (Josh 2:3-13, 6:23) -       Member of the Israelite community (Josh 6:24) -       Wife of Salmon (Matt 1:5) -       Mother (Matt 1:5) BOAZ -       Wealthy landowner (Ruth 2:1) -       A man of integrity & character (Ruth 2:8-9,11-12) -       Redeemer (Ruth 4:9-10) -       Husband (Ruth 4:13) -       Father (Ruth 4:13, 17) OBED -       Born into a wealthy family -       Son (Ruth 4:17) -       Husband – although we do not know anything about his wife. -       Father (Ruth 4:22) JESSE -       Son (Ruth 4:22) -       Shepherd (1 Sam 16) -       Husband – although we do not know anything about his wife. -       Father – (1 Sam 16:5-13, 17:12) DAVID -       Son (1 Sam 16:11-12, 1 Sam 17:12) -       Shepherd (1 Sam 16:11, 17:14-15, 34-35) -       Giant Slayer (1 Sam 17:36-49) -       Husband (1 Sam 18:20-27, 1 Chronicles 3:1-5) -       Father (1 Chronicles 3:1-9) -       King (1 Sam 16:1, 13, 2 Sam 2:4, 2 Sam 5:1-3)

    My Body My Slave

MY BODY, MY SLAVE Study Text: 1 Corinthians 9:27 NIV, 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. Objective: We need to “whip our bodies into shape” and make them our slaves, a slave of the real me, the inner spiritual me. This will cause me to exercise some rigid self-discipline over my body. Introduction: To make my body my slave is to buffet, strike a blow forcing me to the thought of self-discipline and the inner man to align with the word of God.  A disciplined life under control will allow me to preach to others the importance of self-discipline to control the flesh.  Galatians 5:16-17 NIV, 16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. The flesh in this context refers to the sinful nature of humanity, our inherent tendency towards selfishness, sin, and disobedience to God.  Desires of the flesh are the cravings and inclinations that arise from our sinful nature, often leading to actions that are harmful, self-centered, or contrary to God’s will.  You will not gratify the desires of the flesh if you choose to live according to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. One will not fulfill or indulge in their sinful desires or inclinations by praying daily in the Holy Ghost.  The works of the flesh are referenced as follows: Galatians 5:19-21 NIV, 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. The Apostle Paul discusses the importance of self-discipline in practicing faith. Biblical Explanation for Self-Discipline:  A.    Metaphorical Language: ·      Not physical self-harm: The phrase does not encourage self-flagellation or other physical punishments. This verse does not promote physical abuse of the body. ·      Controlling desires: The phrase is a metaphorical expression of rigorous self-discipline and the denial of desires that conflict with Godly living. ·      Athlete training: Paul uses the analogy of an athlete training for a competition to illustrate the level of dedication needed to live a disciplined life in Christ. 1 Corinthians 9:24-26 NIV, 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.  B.    The Purpose: ·      Avoiding disqualification: Paul’s goal is to remain faithful and effective in his ministry, and to avoid being “disqualified” from receiving eternal life. ·      Living for God: The purpose is to stop “indulging the flesh” and live as God desires.  ·      Serving others: Having self-control allows Paul to focus on serving and ministering to others.  C.    The Meaning: ·      The body as an instrument: The body is seen as a physical shell that needs to be controlled by the spiritual or inner self.  ·      Fighting sin: The “flesh” represents the sinful nature that opposes God’s Spirit and needs to be brought into submission. ·      Empowerment by the Spirit: Achieving self-control is not based solely on human willpower but requires the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. Conclusion: “I beat my body and make it my slave” highlights the importance of intentional self-discipline and denying worldly desires in pursuing spiritual growth and a life that honors God. It emphasized the need to control impulses and desires to prevent them from hindering one’s faith and effectiveness in serving God.  Romans 8:38-39 NIV, 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
