Who Is the Proverbs 31 Woman?

One evening as I was praying and apologizing to Jesus for what I thought was my failure to do enough for Him, I felt a prompting to go and get my Jewish Study Bible. I asked the Lord to let it open to whatever it was He wanted me to read. It opened to the conclusion of Proverbs 31, the description of the “Proverbs Woman”. At first, I thought He was going to confirm my feelings of inadequacy, but I could not have been more wrong! I shared the insight I received that evening with a group of women at Hope’s Garden and when I saw how it blessed them, I wanted to share it with you too. Proverbs 31:10-31 from the Complete Jewish Bible A Woman of Valor א 10 Who can find a capable wife? Her value is far beyond that of pearls.ב 11 Her husband trusts her from his heart, and she will prove a great asset to him.ג 12 She works to bring him good, not harm, all the days of her life. ד 13 She procures a supply of wool and flax and works with willing hands.ה 14 She is like those merchant vessels, bringing her food from far away.ו 15 It’s still dark when she rises to give food to her household and orders to the young women serving her. ז 16 She considers a field, then buys it, and from her earnings she plants a vineyard.ח 17 She gathers her strength around her and throws herself into her work.ט 18 She sees that her business affairs go well; her lamp stays lit at night. י 19 She puts her hands to the staff with the flax; her fingers hold the spinning rod.כ 20 She reaches out to embrace the poor and opens her arms to the needy. ל 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; since all of them are doubly clothed.מ 22 She makes her own quilts; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. נ 23 Her husband is known at the city gates when he sits with the leaders of the land.ס 24 She makes linen garments and sells them; she supplies the merchants with sashes. ע 25 Clothed with strength and dignity, she can laugh at the days to come.פ 26 When she opens her mouth, she speaks wisely; on her tongue is loving instruction.צ 27 She watches how things go in her house, not eating the bread of idleness. ק 28 Her children arise; they make her happy; her husband too, as he praises her:ר 29 “Many women have done wonderful things, but you surpass them all!” ש 30 Charm can lie, beauty can vanish, but a woman who fears Adonai should be praised.ת 31 Give her a share in what she produces; let her works speak her praises at the city gates. The Holy Spirit and the Bride

I love all of the Song of Songs but I really love chapter 4. In this video, I read chapter 4 to you and then share the fruit of my prayer and research on the meaning of these verses. Of course, there is more than one way to interpret the Song of Songs. My heart resonates most with the Christological interpretation - Christ is the Bridegroom and the Church as well as the individual soul are the Bride. It is through this lens that we discover the Person of the Holy Spirit in chapter 4. Here is my favorite chapter of the Song of Songs from the Jerusalem Bible. I pray that your heart will fall in love with Christ the Bridegroom and His divine love song too. The Song of Songs which is Solomon’s Chapter 4 THE BRIDEGROOM 4:1 How beautiful you are, my love, how beautiful you are! Your eyes, behind your veil, are doves; your hair is like a flock of goats frisking down the slopes of Gilead. 4:2 Your teeth are like a flock of shorn ewes as they come up from the washing. Each one has its twin, not one unpaired with another. 4:3 Your lips are a scarlet thread and your words enchanting. Your cheeks, behind your veil, are halves of pomegranate. 4:4 Your neck is the tower of David built as a fortress, hung round with a thousand bucklers, and each the shield of a hero. 4:5 Your two breasts are two fawns, twins of a gazelle, that feed among the lilies. 4:6 Before the dawn-wind rises, before the shadows flee, I will go to the mountain of myrrh, to the hill of frankincense. 4:7 You are wholly beautiful, my love, and without a blemish. 4:8 Come from Lebanon, my promised bride, come from Lebanon, come on your way. Lower your gaze, from the heights of Amana, from the crests of Senir and Hermon, the haunt of lions, the mountains of leopards. 4:9 You ravish my heart, my sister, my promised bride, you ravish my heart with a single one of your glances, with one single pearl of your necklace. 4:10 What spells lie in your love, my sister, my promised bride! How delicious is your love, more delicious than wine! How fragrant your perfumes, more fragrant than all other spices! 4:11 Your lips, my promised one, distil wild honey. Honey and milk are under your tongue; and the scent of your garments is like the scent of Lebanon. 4:12 She is a garden enclosed, my sister, my promised bride; a garden enclosed, a sealed fountain. 4:13 Your shoots form an orchard of pomegranate trees, the rarest essences are yours: 4:14 nard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with all the incense-bearing trees; myrrh and aloes, with the subtlest odours. 4:15 Fountain that makes the gardens fertile, well of living water, streams flowing down from Lebanon. THE BRIDE 4:16 Awake, north wind, come, wind of the south! Breathe over my garden, to spread its sweet smell around. Let my Beloved come into his garden, let him taste its rarest fruits. Chapter 5 THE BRIDEGROOM 5:1 I come into my garden, my sister, my promised bride, I gather my myrrh and balsam, I eat my honey and my honeycomb, I drink my wine and my milk. Eat, friends, and drink, drink deep, my dearest friends. Amen. May the Holy Spirit spread the sweet scent of the Bridegroom’s love all around!
