    128 ~ Alexa Leary : From a Traumatic Brain Injury to 3 Paralympic Gold Medals

    In this episode of Before You Bloom, I’m joined by Alexa Leary, a Paralympic gold medallist, world record holder, and someone whose story goes far deeper than the highlights you may have seen. At just 19, Alexa’s life changed in an instant after a devastating cycling accident left her with a severe traumatic brain injury. She spent months in hospital and rehabilitation, relearning how to walk, talk, and navigate a completely new version of herself. In this conversation, we go beyond the medals and achievements to explore what that journey actually looked like, the grief of losing her old identity, the emotional and mental challenges of recovery, and the reality of living with a brain injury. And then, we explore the turning point, how Alexa found her way back to the water, and what it meant to go from survival to standing on the podium at the 2024 Summer Paralympics.     I’m joined by Baci Hillyer, a Death Literacy Advocate, certified end-of-life doula, speaker, and the founder of Deadicate, a movement dedicated to reclaiming death as a natural, human, and communal experience. Baci’s work is not just professional, it’s profoundly personal. As a teenager, she experienced the unimaginable loss of both her father and her brother in a short space of time. These moments shaped her understanding of grief, mortality, and what it truly means to live a meaningful life. For over 37 years, Baci has walked alongside grief, both her own and others’, supporting people through loss with compassion, honesty, and deep care. In this conversation, we explore what “death literacy” really means and why it’s so important in a world that often avoids talking about death altogether. Baci shares her personal story of loss, the challenges of navigating grief at such a young age, and the lessons she’s carried with her through decades of working in palliative care. This episode is gentle, grounding, and incredibly important. It’s a reminder that grief is not something to “fix,” but something to honour and that in learning to face mortality, we can learn how to live more fully. Born with cerebral palsy, Kyle relies on Brent to be his legs on race day but what they’ve built together goes far beyond the finish line. Fueled by Kyle’s relentless determination and their shared passion for inclusion, the brothers have become world-renowned athletes and advocates, redefining what’s possible both on and off the race course. In the past year alone, Brent and Kyle completed the Boston Marathon in an astonishing 3:01, securing second place among all Duo Teams, set a new world record at the IRONMAN World Championships for the push-assist division, and raised over $1 million for their Inclusive Employment Program, creating meaningful job opportunities for people with disabilities. Together, they’ve completed more than 150 races, helped their nonprofit raise over $10 million, and inspired countless people worldwide with their powerful message: Pushing Beyond Limits.     123 ~ From Grief to Healing: Katie Lolas on Loss, Motherhood & Finding Herself Again

    In this heartfelt episode of Before You Bloom, I’m joined by Katie Lolas, a Sydney high school teacher, mum of two, and the voice behind the much loved online space Lady Lolas. Behind her warmth is a story shaped by profound loss. In January 2021, Katie welcomed her daughter Harper into the world while also grieving the sudden passing of her sister, Nadia, who was just 31. In the years that followed, she quietly navigated grief, depression, and motherhood. We talk about how returning to singing became a powerful part of her healing. After making the Top 100 on Australian Idol in 2004, Katie was told she had the voice but not the image, words that silenced her for 15 years. In 2022, encouraged by her psychologist, she found her way back to music. We also honour Nadia’s legacy as an autistic artist and founding member of Studio A, and Katie’s fundraising work in her memory. Adam opens up about the early signs that something wasn’t right with his mental health, taking us into the darker moments of his life. He speaks candidly about how cannabis and alcohol became coping mechanisms, slowly shifting into dependency, and what life looked like when addiction was at its strongest. We explore the psychological grip of addiction, the internal battle between the part of Adam that wanted to heal and the part that felt trapped in the cycle. This conversation also looks forward. Adam reflects on how he manages his mental health today, the tools, routines, and mindsets that help him stay grounded, and how he navigates triggers and urges when they arise.
