Episode 37: When Your Dream Job Becomes Your Nightmare Job

When it comes to work, there are few experiences as painful as seeing your dream job turn into a nightmare. You worked hard to achieve it, felt at the top of the world when you started, but pretty quickly (or after a while) what was supposed to be the highlight of your career became one of the worst - if not the worst - professional experience of your life.I have been there, and I worked with and heard from many people who experienced this as well: it's painful, discouraging, heartbreaking, and just a really hard thing to get through.But...you can get through it. And I am here to tell you that it's a very common experience, although at the moment it doesn't feel light at all.In this podcast episode I share: * my thoughts and observations on why it happens * what you can do to prevent it - you can’t fully control this, but you can do your part of make it less likely * what to do if this happened to you in the past and you cannot move on because some discouragement and fear are still lingering * what to do if you are experiencing this right now * and I end the podcast with some thoughts on the Greek myth of Persephone and how it can inspire us There is a lot here to contemplate and unpack. Leave your comments and questions and I will do my best to reply. Find below some free and paid resources if you’d like to go deeper: * Three Steps to Recognize Your True Intuition * What is your resistance telling you? * All About Informational Interviews * How to Be Yourself at Job Interviews * Discover Your Career (and Business) Non-Negotiables * The Myth of Persephone As always, you can learn more about my work at RepurposeYourPurpose.com This is a public episode. Episode 36: The Insecurity of First Time Business Owners (and what to do about it)

There is something that happens to most people who go into business for themselves - especially if they pursue doing work they care deeply about: insecurity.Nowadays I hear it a lot in regards to being visible on social media: feeling the pressure of being on Instagram, or on video, or having to share your story.I get it! When I started my first business - as a wedding photographer - I had a ton of insecurity, even though I had a degree in photography, had assisted a top wedding photographer for years, and was often told by teachers and fellow students that my work was good. I am not saying this to brag, just pointing out how insecurity is often not related to “what’s real.” My insecurity was completely disproportionate to reality, and what I have noticed over the years is that it happens to many first time business owners. So last night I recorded this video about it: it’s not polished, I recorded it in one take. I wanted to capture these thoughts and observations that I had for a long time. In the video, here’s what I cover: * The insecurity about being “visible” in your marketing * Why it’s not true that everyone needs to be on social media or tell personal stories * What is truly important in building a successful business * What is important about putting yourself out there - so you can choose whether to do it for the right reasons ;) * Why insecurity is often tied to fear of failure or to strong attachment to a certain identity * The difference I experienced in starting my businesses: with the first one I had a ton of insecurity, with my current business I felt much more grounded I hope this helps! Episode 35: Degrowth with Steve Rocco

It's been a long time coming, but I have finally invited a guest to talk about Degrowth, what it is, some of the ideas behind it, and why we need a new way of thinking about - and doing - finance. Steve Rocco has worked in financing roles across traditional and sustainable markets for over 25 years. He was on his way to complete a PhD with the Post Growth Innovation Lab at the University of Vigo (Spain) focusing on a post-growth financial sector when he met Anastasia Linn and Matt Orsagh. Steve, Anastasia, and Matt went on to co-found The Arketa Institute for Post-Growth Finance, a non profit organization dedicated to crafting a new vision for what genuinely sustainable finance can be, in line with scientific findings on planetary boundaries and human needs. Here's a bit more about my guest, Steve Rocco: Steve brings more than 25 years of experience in finance across a wide range of finance. In investment banking, Steve has worked in capital markets in New York across most asset classes in various institutional sales/relationship management roles. He left wall street for the Media Development Investment fund and focused on South American. Later as an entrepreneur, Steve was co-founder of Mission Markets, a capital raising platform for impact investments. In asset management, Steve worked for MainStreet Partners, a London based ESG advisor focused on public markets. Recently, Steve has had a series of advisory roles with the UN, ADB, USAID, and private investors project focused on the Global South. In this episode, Steve and I mention quite a few organizations and resources: - Arketa Institute for Post-Growth Finance: https://www.arketa-institute.org/ - Arketa's Publication, "By Disaster or Design:" https://www.arketa-institute.org/resources/by-disaster-or-design - Planetary Boundaries (Stockholm Resilience Center): https://www.stockholmresilience.org/research/planetary-boundaries.html - On the Phenomenon of B******t Jobs - A Work Rant by David Graeber: https://strikemag.org/b******t-jobs/ - The Repurpose Your Purpose Podcast Episode 34 - The Meaning of Work: Curious to learn more about Repurpose Your Purpose and how we can work together? Episode 32: Career Growth with Chelsea Amable-Zibolsky

I had the pleasure of coaching Chelsea Amable-Zibolsky at two different times in her career, with years in between. This is something I really cherish about my work: I sometimes get to work with clients again after a few years and we dive deep into the present moment as they grow and expand. Episode 31: Divine Intervention with Brendan Patrick Hughes

Let me say it right up front: I am a huge fan of Divine Intervention, Brendan Patrick Hughes latest project. If you have followed Repurpose Your Purpose from the very beginning, you might remember Brendan joining one of my panel discussion events in Los Angeles. Since attending one of his shows almost a decade ago, I have been a fan of Brendan’s storytelling, and Divine Intervention is his best work yet: the culmination of a lifetime of research, planning, and Purpose. I knew I had to invite him to join me on The Repurpose Your Purpose Podcast when in the second episode, two of the main characters in this true story grapple with the following question: Are you in this world to participate in your vocation? Or are you in this vocation to participate in the world? If there ever was a time for all of us to grapple with this same question, it is now. Divine Intervention is the untold story of a ragtag band of radical nuns in combat boots, wild-haired priests and their madcap friends who swiftly became accomplished cat-burglars in a hellbent effort to sabotage the Vietnam war. Many went to jail, some betrayed their friends, others fell in love. Across 10 episodes, host Brendan Patrick Hughes uncovers their audacious illegal acts – scaling walls, picking locks, destroying draft cards, harboring a draft fugitive in a church sanctuary, and trading blows with J. Edgar Hoover. This podcast made me laugh, think, cry, hold my breath, loudly gasp, and most of all, it opened my heart with stories of love, friendship, family, community, peace, and solidarity. Brendan had a very personal reason for making Divine Intervention which is revealed at the end of episode 9 and fully told in the very last episode, episode 10. We chose not to share it in this interview, so you can experience it in the full power of Brendan’s narrative arc. It’s one more reason to fully immerse yourself in the story. I hope my interview with Brendan will inspire you to listen to Divine Intervention. I cannot recommend it enough. Here’s the trailer. You can find Divine Intervention on any of your favorite podcast platforms: * Apple Podcasts * Spotify * Amazon Music * iHeartRadio * PlayerFM * Podchaser About Brendan Patrick Hughes Brendan Patrick Hughes is a filmmaker and podcast creator dividing his time between New York City and Los Angeles.
