EP59 – Rhino Tanks and Sticky Bombs: GI Ingenuity in the Second World War w/Bob Wettemann

Send us Fan Mail Coming of age during the Great Depression, the American boys who fought in World War II had, through necessity, developed a unique brand of technological resourcefulness. Joe is joined by Bob Wettemann to discuss how American servicemen grew up in a society where the machine was ubiquitous—where enduring an unparalleled period of financial distress meant learning to keep their Model Ts, Fordson tractors, or other machinery operational. Wettemann describes how this tinkerer’s mentality promoted a technical aptitude and willingness to adapt unmatched by other armies fielded during World War II. At the same time, the US command structure demonstrated a willingness to evaluate, accept, and employ such efforts to improve both fighting capacity and the general comfort of US servicemen. Seamlessly blending social, military, intellectual, and technological history, Rhino Tanks and Sticky Bombs weaves an engaging narrative about the roots of American ingenuity during World War II—and makes a compelling case for a specific instance of American distinctiveness that proved crucial to Allied victory.    If you'd like to become a Patreon supporter of The "We're Not Lost, Private" Podcast, check us out here: https://patreon.com/WereNotLostPrivatePodcast    You can check us out on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/@WereNotLostPrivatePodcast  If you like the pod, please hit like, subscribe and share!   You can listen to us on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and a host of other podcatchers.   We're also on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/werenotlostprivate1944    and Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WereNotLostPrivate    If you’d like to pick up a copy of Rhino Tanks and Sticky Bombs, head over to the following link: https://www.oupress.com/9780806195988/rhino-tanks-and-sticky-bombs/  Support the show

EP58 – Jump into the Fight, Volume I: A Primer

Send us Fan Mail Back in July of 1942, the Army began constituting at Camp Toccoa what would become one of its most famous units, the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Over the course of fourteen months, Company E of the 506th, would train in Toccoa, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky, before heading to New York for embarkation and eventually, England. While this period of Easy’s history has been written about before, it’s never been done so in this level of granularity. Rich in details and peppered with insights directly from the Easy Company veterans, join Joe as he discusses his new book, Jump into the Fight: Volume I, which places you in the ranks with the men as they ran up and down Mount Currahee, as they were violently buffeted by winds while making their qualifying jumps at Fort Benning, and as they bonded under the strict training methods of Captain Herbert Sobel. We're also on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/werenotlostprivate1944    and Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WereNotLostPrivate    For more information about Jump into the Fight, Volume I, you can head over to Joe’s website: https://ssgtmooch.wixsite.com/joe-muccia/jump-into-the-fight-vol1 Support the show

    EP56 – Lighting the Torch w/Sam Wallace

Send us Fan Mail Fought between November 1942 and May 1943, the Second World War’s Tunisian Campaign has often been described as where the Allies ‘learned to fight’. The vital culmination of the conflict fought across the breadth of North Africa, as well as an important stepping-stone to the opening of a second front in Europe, Tunisia saw American, British, and French forces on air, land, and sea, combine to drive the Axis forces from the African Continent for good. Join Joe and author Sam Wallace as they discuss the strategic, operational and tactical impacts of the critical period of 1942 to 1943 of the North African Campaign and its influence on the way the Allies waged war until the conclusion of World War II. We're also on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/werenotlostprivate1944    and Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WereNotLostPrivate      You can find Sam on Twitter/X at: @earloftunis  If you’re interested in picking up a copy of Lighting the Torch, you can do so at: https://www.helion.co.uk/military-history-books/lighting-the-torch-the-tunisian-campaign-and-forging-an-allied-way-of-war-1942-43.php Support the show
