Motivation Gets You Started - Discipline Keeps You Going

What do you do when you simply don’t feel motivated anymore? In this short episode of The Life Dojo Podcast, Michael and Marcus explore the relationship between motivation, discipline and purpose. Marcus explains that even while preparing for competition, there are days when he has no desire to train — but he still goes because he has committed to the goal and has a plan that needs to be executed. 1008 The conversation develops into an important distinction: Motivation can get you started. Discipline keeps you moving when the feeling disappears. But discipline also needs direction. Michael argues that underneath lasting motivation is usually a deeper reason — your why. For The Life Dojo, that means sharing experiences, ideas and lessons that might help someone else think differently, get through a difficult period or discover a stronger sense of purpose themselves. 1008 They also discuss the importance of the people around you. Even highly driven people have difficult days, and having people who challenge you, encourage you and help you find solutions can make the difference between stagnating and continuing to grow. 1008 Find something worth pursuing. Know why it matters. Then build the discipline to keep going when motivation disappears. This clip is taken from the full-length episode You’ve Lost Your Edge (Here’s How to Get It Back). Stop Doubting Yourself and Start Believing in You

What happens when you have a vision for your life, but the people around you don't believe in it? In this short episode of The Life Dojo Podcast, Michael and Marcus explore self-doubt, limiting beliefs, personal growth and why stepping outside your comfort zone is essential when pursuing something meaningful. Michael reflects on his own journey of building The Life Dojo, explaining how starting a podcast and developing a coaching business pushed him far beyond what he would have been comfortable doing earlier in his life. They discuss how our old habits, negative self-talk and the fear of being judged can prevent us from taking action. Instead of constantly comparing yourself with other people, the conversation encourages you to recognise how far you have already come and focus on becoming better than the person you were yesterday. Michael also shares how a lack of support from friends and family, combined with his own limiting beliefs, affected previous business ventures and nearly caused him to abandon his current ambitions. But personal growth requires learning from those experiences rather than allowing them to define your future. You don't need everyone else to believe in your vision. You need the courage to believe in yourself and keep moving forward. This clip is taken from the full-length episode You Are the Problem (And Here’s How to Fix It). Stop Being a Victim of Your Own Life

What keeps people trapped in the same patterns for years? In this short episode of The Life Dojo Podcast, Michael and Marcus discuss victim mentality, personal responsibility and the danger of constantly asking, “Why is this happening to me?” They explore how negative self-talk, fear and blaming outside circumstances can keep people stuck, while taking ownership of your choices can begin to shift you from simply surviving to actually growing.  Marcus reflects on periods in his own life where he fell into victimhood and how difficult experiences eventually forced him to take a harder look at himself.  The conversation also explores the importance of environment, the people around you and being willing to ask for help from those who are further ahead rather than resenting them.  The message is simple: You may not be responsible for everything that happens to you. But you are responsible for what you do next. Change begins with small actions, honest self-reflection and the willingness to move towards the things you have been avoiding.  This clip is taken from the full-length episode The Silent Battle Every Man Faces (And How to Win). You Become What You Consume

What are you feeding your mind every day? In this short episode of The Life Dojo Podcast, Michael and Marcus discuss how the content we repeatedly consume can influence our thoughts, emotions and perception of the world. Michael reflects on seeing young teenagers exposed to extremely graphic violent content online and questions what repeated exposure to that material can do to a developing mind.  The conversation also explores how films, television, music and online media can influence us in very different ways. Michael shares the opposite example from his own life: watching martial-arts films such as The Karate Kid before competing in karate, and how the imagery, music and story became a source of motivation during competition.  The lesson is not that all media is bad. It is that what you repeatedly expose yourself to matters. If you constantly consume fear, violence, outrage and negativity, it can begin to dominate your attention. If you deliberately consume material that inspires discipline, training, learning and personal growth, you give your mind something very different to work with.  Be deliberate about what enters your mind. This clip is taken from the full-length episode Why Some Men Never Break (And Others Do). Why Pushing Harder Isn’t Always the Answer

Is pushing harder always the answer? In this short episode of The Life Dojo Podcast, Michael speaks with performance specialist Joe Watkins about the hidden cost of modern high-performance culture. After more than a decade working in elite sport, Joe began questioning an approach built around constantly pushing, grinding and chasing the next achievement. He had seen success — but he had also seen people become exhausted and broken at the human level. Joe argues that genuine performance requires something more balanced: Knowing when to push.Knowing when to recover.Knowing when to suffer. And knowing when to let go. Michael and Joe also explore the importance of mindset, purpose and the deeper reasons that drive high performers beyond physical ability alone. Using examples from combat sports, they discuss how the difference between good and great performance can sometimes come down to timing, presence and knowing exactly when to act rather than simply applying more force. The same principle applies to personal development. Growth requires challenge, but that challenge needs to remain within reach. Consistent, incremental effort creates far more sustainable progress than repeatedly going all-in and burning yourself out. Performance is not about being switched on all the time. It is about learning when to push and when to recover. This clip is taken from the full-length episode Why High Performers Burn Out (And How to Fix It) with Joe Watkins.
