A Ghoul at the Best Western

Episode 111: A Ghoul at the Best Western Prompts: Marble, 110099, Effervescence LT and Neal are back with a vengeance and LT gets triggered by two words that have haunted her for years... A Capella. But enough about the dulcet tones of beat boxing and harmonies. Neal starts off today's episode taking 1100 and turning it into November 2000 to talk about one of the highest grossing movies of Y2K, How The Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey as everyone's favorite antagonist with a heart two sizes too small. Neal tells behind-the-scenes anecdotes, references the original book and cartoon, and previews some news behind the potential new franchise. Then, LT invites listeners to learn about the extraordinary Edmonia Lewis, an American sculptor who was prolific during the Civil War and created unforgettable works of art when the world wasn't kind to her. Works include busts of famous American Generals (later featured in Hollywood being played by Ferris Bueller of all people) as well as work in Italy and Europe that would make her work timeless. From The Garage

Episode 110: From The Garage Prompts: Puce, 1703, Garage The dynamic duo is back and ready to rumble. This week's episode is back to our normal tried-and-true format of LT and Neal trading barbs and wisdom to curate something new and exciting for you to learn about, watch, listen, or check out. LT starts off talking about the incredible story of James Hampton, a World War II veteran and janitor for the General Services Administration with no artistic training who created a masterwork in a garage of all places. This is one history you won't want to miss. Then, Neal decides to take the word Garage and teach himself and listeners about Garage Rock. From its origins, what exactly the sound is, to famous bands and their songs that we all know and love. Neal even shares a fake band that he and Matt (of Triviality) used to convince hipsters at Starbucks was real. Considered Sexy For a Brief Period of Time

Episode 108: Considered Sexy For a Brief Period of Time Prompts: Boutique, 20696, Maroon Neal and Shady kick off part two of their tit-for-tat with Neal going all-in on the number 69 for his discussion. Instead of one film, or one artist, Neal takes a request from a patron to give a list of the essential films you need to see to understand film in 1969. Some of the films covered are independent films, hybrid narrative/documentary, crime films, an X-rated film, and a dark psychological Czechoslovak horror/thriller that Shady is honored Neal thought of him when recommended. The pair discuss modern films that perhaps take inspiration from some of these films, and Neal explains trivia, tidbits, and goes over the Hollywood industry and how it was changing during this pivotal period all while shoehorning in an embarrassing story from his musical theatre days. We hope you enjoy that. Next week, Lauren should be back, and all the updates you've ever wanted or never asked for about the house situation will be revealed!! Repord That Codpast

Episode 106: Repord That Codpast Prompts: Boutique, 20696, Maroon As promised, Neal is joined by his friend, groomsman, screenwriting partner, and best writer he knows, Justin Shady, for a fun episode about Hollywood and much more! Neal and Justin start off by talking about what it's like to be a writer in Hollywood and the never-ending development process from spec scripts, to creative execs, to broken dreams and disappointment. All in a days work. They mention some projects they've worked on together and Justin tells listeners about his Blacklist script Saving Charlie Chaplin which we can upload if you all want to read it! For the prompts, Justin talks about one of the most influential music acts ever, The Beastie Boys, and chronicles the creation of their seminal album, Paul's Boutique. Then he gets all number-y with our numbers and ends with a heartfelt and funny tribute to a family member and the word Maroon. LT reached out to Neal during the recording to let him know that things got a little dicey with the move (more on that later) so this episode is split into two with Neal's presentation set for next week! Do You Hear The Dentist Drill?

Episode 104: Do You Hear The Dentist Drill? Prompts: 1665, Mirrored, Mauve, Revolutionary Bonjour les auditeurs! Neal is back solo this week and is coming to you live from a recent emergency tooth extraction. He does his best to not let you know that, but a few flubs were expected. It's just a matter of what word makes him flub! After briefly discussing the dental drama, and thanking all of YOU for always being so interactive, Neal does a deep dive into Les Misérables, arguably the most emotionally devastating musical ever staged. Neal traces the story back to Victor Hugo, the author of the original book the musical is based on, talks about the story and characters of the musical and how it was originally produced, and does a quick sidebar on Eugène Delacroix's painting Liberty Leading the People and why it might be the single best visual distillation of everything this musical is trying to say. During this solo deep dive you'll learn about some famous faces who have graced the stage in this marvelous production, learn about some of the greatest End of Act One showstoppers in Broadway history (what are your favorites?) and revisit one of the first viral acts in the history of the internet that you may have forgotten.... they surely "Dreamed a Dream."
