Coming Out Day - A collection from Queer Life Stories

Welcome back to Queer Tasmania, a new LGBTIQA+ podcast from North West Pride (producers of Queer Life Stories). Today is Coming Out Day – a day to support anyone who is coming out of the closet. Our original podcast, Queer Life Stories (returning again in 2025) was created to help break down ignorance and misunderstandings of our community, so show that our lives are different and difficult only because of the societal challenges imposed on us for being queer. Queer Life Stories was an attempt to show the everyday stories of being queer in Tasmania, and capture those lived experiences and amazing stories of unique and wonderful people. In this episode, we share a few of the Coming Out stories that were shared over the years of the Queer Life Stories podcast – and at least one that was recorded, but until now, has not been heard. Details to on where to find the full episodes of each of our coming out stories are further below. Queer Tasmania has some great upcoming episodes in the planning stages, but our releases may be a bit sporadic - so please, keep an eye on our social media to keep up to date - Find us at Queer Tasmania on Facebook, Queer Tasmania Podcast on Instagram and to reach out via email at Wakefield_Productions@outlook.com If you have a story idea you'd like to hear on the podcast, or if you'd like to host or make your own episode to share, please reach out to us and have a chat. The stories featured today are from Queer Life Stories – Available everywhere that Queer Tasmania is available. The specific episodes that each story is from is below, in the order they appear in this episode. Trent – Episode 3 Sarah & Sue – Episode 9 Garry – Unaired Francene – Episode 5 Peter – Episode 8 Gray – Episode 14 Tanner – Episode 12 Queer Tasmania is produced by Wakefield Productions on behalf of North West Pride; an LGBTIQA+ community group that creates social inclusion events and activities and creates safe spaces for community to come together across the North, North-West and West Coast of Tasmania. Rodney Croome talks Queer State of the State

Welcome back to Queer Tasmania, a new LGBTIQA+ podcast from North West Pride (producers of Queer Life Stories). Rodney Croome is a name many of you will know; he has been a part of legislative changes for LGBTIQA+ protections in Tasmania, and the country for decades. From fighting for decriminalisation of homosexual acts in Tasmania, to the national campaign for Marriage Equality – just as examples of some of the work Rodney has been involved in. Queer Tasmania was fortunate to sit down with Rodney and talk about some of the stories of the past as well as discuss what he and Equality Tasmania are working on currently and where the community can support some of these challenges. We’re calling this conversation, the Queer State of the State…. LINKS AND NOTES Rodney mentioned Just Equal’s open survey to determine LGBTIQA+ community views on who should attend pride. You can find that survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LGBTIQAPrideEventsSurvey You can find more details and contact information on the Equality Tasmania website: https://equalitytasmania.org.au/ And Just Equal Australia: https://www.equal.org.au/ Queer Tasmania has some great upcoming episodes in the planning stages, but our releases may be a bit sporadic - so please, keep an eye on our social media to keep up to date - Find us at Queer Tasmania on Facebook, Queer Tasmania Podcast on Instagram and to reach out via email at Wakefield_Productions@outlook.com If you have a story idea you'd like to hear on the podcast, or if you'd like to host or make your own episode to share, please reach out to us and have a chat. The Laramie Project

Welcome back to Queer Tasmania, a new LGBTIQA+ podcast from North West Pride (producers of Queer Life Stories). Coming to Launceston later this month is a production by Three River Theatre titled "The Laramie Project" - an impactful true story of a town struggling to understand the impacts of the horrific hate motivated murder of 21 year old Matthew Shepard. This is a verbatim play, meaning the dialogue performed are the actual words of the people of the town of Laramie. I had the opportunity to sit down with this production's director, Rae Smith, cast member Jaz Daniells and vocal coach Travis Hennessy to talk about The Laramie Project and the ongoing importance and relevance of this piece of theatre. To find out more about Three River Theatre, check out their website here: https://www.threerivertheatre.com.au/ The Matthew Shepard Foundation can be found here: https://www.matthewshepard.org/ And to purchase tickets to this production of The Laramie Project, follow this link: https://theatrenorth.com.au/3rt-laramie-project-24 Queer Tasmania has some great upcoming episodes in the planning stages, but our releases may be a bit sporadic - so please, keep an eye on our social media to keep up to date - Find us at Queer Tasmania on Facebook, Queer Tasmania Podcast on Instagram and to reach out via email at Wakefield_Productions@outlook.com If you have a story idea you'd like to hear on the podcast, or if you'd like to host or make your own episode to share, please reach out to us and have a chat.
