    Who Is God, Really? Learning to Know the God of Scripture

Welcome to the beginning of a brand-new journey into Knowing God: Discovering the Character and Attributes of God. In this first episode, we're going back to the most important question we can ask as followers of Christ: Who is God, really? It's easy to know about God without actually knowing Him. We can grow up hearing Bible stories, memorize Scripture, attend church, learn theology, and still carry a picture of God that has been shaped more by our experiences, culture, or other people's opinions than by what Scripture actually reveals. But if we're going to trust God when life gets hard, we need to know who we're trusting. Together, we're going to explore what the Bible reveals about God's character and why understanding His attributes—His holiness, goodness, mercy, faithfulness, sovereignty, justice, love, and more—isn't just theological information. These truths can transform the way we understand our circumstances, our struggles, our identity, and our relationship with Him. We'll hear wisdom from trusted Christian theologians including A.W. Tozer, J.I. Packer, and John Calvin, while grounding our discussion in Scripture. We'll look at powerful passages including Exodus 34:6–7, John 17:3, Hebrews 1:1–3, Psalm 103:8–14, and John 14:8–9 as we begin discovering what God has revealed about Himself. And here's the question I want you to carry with you: Are you trusting the God who has revealed Himself in Scripture—or a version of God you've created from your own experiences and expectations? Because friend, when our understanding of God changes, our understanding of everything else can change with it. So grab your Bible, pull up a chair, and come on in.     Recognizing God at Work: When God Doesn’t Show Up the Way We Expected & Joining God Where He Is Already Working

    I want to hear from you! Text me here. What happens when you believe God is working—but He isn't working the way you expected? In this episode, we continue exploring what it means to recognize God’s presence and activity in the middle of difficult seasons, unanswered prayers, waiting, uncertainty, and circumstances we cannot control. Sometimes we aren't struggling to believe that God *can* work. We're struggling because His answer doesn't look anything like the answer we were praying for. In "When God Doesn’t Show Up the Way We Expected,” we take a closer look at several biblical accounts where people had very specific expectations about how God would move. Naaman expected a dramatic healing. Elijah looked for God in powerful signs. Martha and Mary expected Jesus to come immediately when Lazarus became sick. John the Baptist, sitting in prison, wrestled with questions about whether Jesus really was the One they had been waiting for. Yet God was working in every one of these situations. These stories remind us that God’s activity isn't always recognizable simply because it doesn't match our expectations. A delay isn't necessarily denial. A closed door isn't necessarily rejection. Silence doesn't automatically mean absence. Sometimes faith means learning to recognize God's hand even when He chooses a different method, a different timing, or a different answer than the one we wanted. Then, in “Joining God Where He Is Already Working,” we take the next step. If God is already working around us, what does He want us to do about it? Jesus gives us the ultimate example in John 5:17–20. Rather than pursuing His own agenda and asking the Father to bless it, Jesus watched what the Father was doing, listened, followed, and joined Him. That changes the way we think about discovering God's will. Instead of continually asking, “God, what is Your will for my life?”, we begin asking: “God, what is Your will?” “What are You already doing?” “How are You inviting me to join You?” We'll talk about what it looks like to recognize God's invitations in everyday life—from difficult conversations and opportunities to serve, to forgiveness, unexpected interruptions, quiet obedience, and even seasons when God may be calling us to slow down, rest, and depend on Him. We'll also explore why following God doesn't always mean doing something bigger. Sometimes obedience looks surprisingly ordinary. A text message. A conversation. A prayer. An act of forgiveness. A closed door we choose not to force open. A willingness to rest. A decision to trust God with the next step instead of demanding the entire map. And perhaps most importantly, we'll begin to see that God may be doing more within us than we can see happening around us. This conversation isn't finished yet. Next week, we'll continue this journey by exploring one of the most overlooked aspects of recognizing God's work: the possibility that the greatest miracle God is doing may not be the change happening around you—but the transformation He is accomplishing within you.     Recognizing God at Work: Finding God in the Valley - When Your Body is Fighting and Your Heart is Tired

Finding God in the Valley — When Your Body Is Fighting and Your Heart Is Tired What happens when you know God is real, but you can't seem to recognize where He is in the middle of your pain? What happens when you've prayed, waited, trusted, and still find yourself asking: "God, where are You?" In Parts 3 and 4 of Recognizing God at Work: Learning to See His Hand in Your Everyday Life, we move from understanding that God is always working to the very personal question of how we recognize His presence when life becomes painful, confusing, and exhausting. And this part of the conversation gets real. Over the last month and a half, I've walked through a particularly difficult season with migraines that were kicking my butt, POTS that was throwing me for a loop, and days when I honestly felt lost, alone, exhausted, and spiritually discouraged. There were moments when I wasn't questioning whether God existed. I was questioning where He was in the middle of what I was experiencing. Maybe you've been there too. Maybe your struggle isn't chronic illness. Maybe you're walking through grief, anxiety, disappointment, financial pressure, relationship struggles, unanswered prayer, or a season of spiritual dryness. Whatever your valley looks like, pain has a way of narrowing our vision. When we're hurting, it's easy to see the problem and miss the Provider. It's easy to see the storm and miss the One walking with us through it. It's easy to interpret God's silence as His absence. But what if God has been there all along? Finding God When Your Circumstances Haven't Changed In this portion of the episode, we'll explore why recognizing God's work doesn't always mean watching Him immediately change our circumstances. Sometimes God's work looks like healing. Sometimes it looks like endurance. Sometimes it looks like provision. Sometimes it looks like protection. Sometimes it looks like conviction and correction. And sometimes it looks like grace sufficient for one more day. We'll look at Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 12:9, where God tells him: "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness." That's a difficult truth to sit with when you're hurting. Because we often want God to remove the weakness. We want the answer. We want the breakthrough. We want the storm to stop. But Scripture reminds us that God's presence and power aren't limited to the moments when everything goes according to our plans. God can be working in the valley just as powerfully as He's working on the mountaintop. Training Our Eyes to See God's Fingerprints Part 4 takes the conversation a step further. If God really is working all around us, how do we learn to recognize Him? We'll talk about developing spiritual awareness and learning to look beyond the extraordinary for evidence of God's activity in the ordinary. What if the text message that came at exactly the right moment was more than coincidence? What if the closed door you've been frustrated about was actually protection? What if the Scripture that suddenly spoke directly to your circumstances was God's way of reminding you of His truth? What if the strength you found on the day you thought you couldn't take another step was evidence of His sustaining grace? What if the peace you experienced in the middle of chaos wasn't because your circumstances suddenly became peaceful—but because God was present in the middle of them? We'll also explore why our attention matters. Our world is loud. News. Social media. Stress. Responsibilities. Opinions. Fear. Comparison. Distraction. Sometimes we aren't struggling because God stopped working. We're struggling because we've become so distracted that we've stopped looking. And that's why one of the practical challenges from this episode is simple: "Where did I see God today?" Not where was life perfect. Not where did everything go according to plan. Not where did I get everything I wanted. Simply: Where did I see God? Because when you begin looking for His fingerprints, you may discover that He's been present in far more moments than you realized. When God Doesn't Show Up the Way We Expected We'll also begin exploring one of the biggest barriers to recognizing God: our expectations. We often have an idea of what God's answer should look like. But Scripture repeatedly shows us that God doesn't always work according to our expectations. We'll look at biblical examples including Naaman, Elijah, Martha and Mary, Lazarus, and John the Baptist and consider what their stories teach us about recognizing God when His timing, methods, and answers don't look the way we anticipated. Because sometimes we interpret delay as absence. Sometimes we interpret silence as abandonment. Sometimes we interpret a closed door as rejection. But what if we're seeing only one piece of a much larger story? The goal isn't to pretend that suffering doesn't hurt. It does. Faith doesn't require us to deny our pain or pretend everything is okay. Instead, biblical faith teaches us to bring our questions, disappointment, weakness, and confusion honestly before God while continuing to trust His character. And sometimes the most profound question isn't: "Why is this happening?" but: "God, where are You in this?" And This Conversation Isn't Over... This is only the next chapter of the conversation. Next week, we'll continue exploring what it means to recognize God at work and how we move from simply noticing His fingerprints to actually joining Him where He is working. We'll dig deeper into John 5:17–20, Jesus' example of watching what the Father is doing, and what it means for us to stop asking God to bless our plans and instead learn to recognize His activity and adjust our lives to Him. We'll also continue exploring what happens when the greatest work God is doing isn't necessarily happening around us—but within us. Recognizing God at Work: Learning to See His Hand in Your Everyday Life Have you ever found yourself asking, “God, where are You?” Maybe you're walking through a season of uncertainty, waiting for an answer, dealing with circumstances you don't understand, or simply wondering why you don't seem to recognize God working in your life the way you thought you would. But what if the problem isn't that God is absent? What if we've simply stopped recognizing what He's already doing? In this episode of Prodigal Daughter: Light in the Shadows* we're beginning a deeper conversation about recognizing God at work in our everyday lives and learning to shift our focus from what 'we' think God should be doing to what God is actually doing. Following the previous episode, Lord… What If I'm Wrong?, we continue exploring what happens when surrender changes our perspective. Sometimes surrender doesn't immediately change our circumstances—but it changes what we're able to see. We'll begin with a foundational question: What if we're asking the wrong question? Instead of simply asking, “What is God's will for my life?”, what if we begin by asking: “What is God's will?” Once we understand God's will and begin recognizing where He is already working, we can adjust our lives to Him rather than continually asking God to adjust Himself to our plans. Jesus gives us a powerful example in John 5:17, 19–20, where He explains that His Father is always working and that He does what He sees His Father doing. Jesus wasn't operating according to His own independent agenda. He was watching, listening, following, and responding to the Father's activity. That's a powerful challenge for those of us who spend so much time asking God to bless .our' plans. In Part 1, we'll explore: ✨ Why the focus needs to be on God—not our circumstances. ✨ What it means to recognize that God is already working around us. ✨ Why we can deeply desire to experience God while simultaneously missing what He's doing. ✨ How Scripture teaches us to recognize God's patterns rather than building our theology around one isolated verse or story. ✨ Why Jesus is our ultimate role model for recognizing and responding to God's activity. ✨ How surrender can change our spiritual vision. We'll also begin looking at an important biblical pattern: God often works in ways we don't immediately recognize. Sometimes He's working through a conversation. Sometimes through a closed door. Sometimes through an unexpected opportunity. Sometimes through correction. Sometimes through protection. Sometimes through provision. And sometimes through seasons when it looks like absolutely nothing is happening. Part 2: When God Is Working in the Waiting From Abraham and Joseph to David and Hannah, Scripture repeatedly shows us that waiting does not mean God is inactive. Abraham waited for God's promise. Joseph endured betrayal, slavery, false accusation, and prison before seeing the purpose behind his journey. David spent years in caves and wilderness before stepping into the role God had prepared for him. Hannah carried the pain of unanswered prayer before seeing God answer. Their stories remind us that God's activity isn't always immediately visible. Sometimes the deepest work is happening beneath the surface. And that may be exactly where you are right now. Maybe you're waiting for healing. Maybe you're waiting for restoration. Maybe you're waiting for direction. Maybe you're waiting for a relationship to change. Maybe you're waiting for an answer to a prayer you've prayed so many times that you've almost stopped asking. But waiting isn't necessarily evidence that God has forgotten you. Sometimes waiting is where God is preparing you, strengthening you, refining you, and teaching you to trust Him more deeply. As we continue this conversation, we'll wrestle with what it means to recognize God's fingerprints when His work isn't immediately obvious, and why looking at the broader story of Scripture can help us understand how God generally works. And friend, this is only the beginning. Next week, we'll continue this conversation by going even deeper into what it looks like to recognize God at work in seasons of suffering, uncertainty, chronic illness, disappointment, and spiritual dryness. We'll talk about what happens when our circumstances become so loud that we struggle to recognize God's presence, and how we can learn to look for His fingerprints even in the middle of the storm.
