Real Talk: Midlife Weight Loss, Grace Over Guilt

Send us Fan Mail In this Red Lips Real Talk Podcast episode, the hosts have a candid conversation about why weight loss can feel harder in midlife, sharing personal experiences with COVID weight gain, fatigue, body aches, injuries, depression, and perimenopause. They discuss how hormonal changes, reduced estrogen, muscle loss, and a more sedentary lifestyle can impact metabolism, and emphasize the importance of eating fewer calories than in younger years, cutting back on snacking, prioritizing strength training over only cardio, and staying consistent with movement (walking, elliptical, lifting weights, stretching). They also talk about using different “tools” for support, including medical guidance, nutrition help, tracking, and other options, noting cost barriers, side effects, safety considerations, and the need for individualized approaches and blood work. The episode closes by encouraging listeners to give themselves grace, focus on health and quality of life, and remember they’re not alone. Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC); Jame's Fight, Heather's Voice

Send us Fan Mail In this deeply moving episode, we sit down with Heather Noel to talk about her husband James — their story, his fight, and the legacy he left behind. Heather and James's love story started young — high school sweethearts who built a life together. That life was upended when James was diagnosed with Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC), a rare and aggressive kidney cancer tied to the sickle cell trait, disproportionately affecting people of African descent. Heather opens up about the fight that followed: doctors who dismissed his symptoms, medical care that fell short, and family dynamics that made an already devastating diagnosis even harder to navigate. Given just three months to live, James defied the odds — surviving for years thanks to specialized treatment at MD Anderson in Texas and a resilience that inspired everyone around him. This episode is both a tribute to a man who left a lasting mark on his community and a call to action: raising awareness for a disease too few people know about. At its heart, this is a story about advocating fiercely for yourself and the people you love — and about a love that didn't end when the fighting got hardest. A conversation about grief, strength, and what it means to truly show up for someone. Ovarian Cancer: A Daughter's Tribute of Love and Loss

Send us Fan Mail In this heartfelt episode, we discuss the often-overlooked warning signs of ovarian cancer, including bloating, eating less/feeling full quickly, abnormal pelvic/back pain, and bladder trouble (BEAT). We also explore why ovarian cancer is so frequently diagnosed in later stages, the limitations of Pap smears, and the importance of understanding available screening and genetic testing options. Our guest, Deya, shares the powerful story of her mother, Sandra Alegria, who was diagnosed with stage III ovarian cancer in 2021 after experiencing a sudden loss of appetite and other worsening symptoms. After chemotherapy proved ineffective and surgery was not an option, Sandra responded remarkably well to hormone therapy, gaining nearly two additional years of quality life. Eventually, the cancer progressed, leading to serious complications and hospice care. Sandra passed away at age 68. Through Sandra's journey, this episode highlights the importance of listening to your body, advocating for yourself, asking questions, and seeking additional medical opinions when something doesn't feel right. Most importantly, it serves as a loving tribute to Sandra's strength, resilience, and legacy. Don't forget to share this podcast with a friend!  Episodes are released every two weeks on Wednesdays.
