S3E6: No Aggie Stands Alone: Suicide Awareness at Texas A&M

No Aggie stands alone. Not the student who is struggling, or the friend who isn't sure how they can help.    As part of the ongoing conversation about suicide awareness and prevention at Texas A&M University, this episode is a reminder that Aggieland stands together through good times and tough times, with a network of care, support and resources available year round.   On this episode of On Air with Student Affairs, host Elizabeth Drake sits down with mental health professionals from Student Life and University Health Services to talk through the signs that someone may be struggling and where to point them to next.  It can be difficult to know what to say to in these circumstances, and you might not have perfect words, but simply communicating that you care can go a long way. This episode will help give you the tools check-in on your friends, or yourself and recognize when it may be time to seek additional support.   The conversation also covers the harder moments:  What to do when a friend asks you not to tell anyone they're struggling with suicidal thoughtsHow QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) gives you a place to startWhat Tell Somebody, Student Life and UHS Counseling can do, including for students who are only trying to figure out how to support a friendDon't handle your toughest moments alone. S2E19: Aggies Are Never Alone: Mental Health with Student Assistance Services

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — and this episode, we're here to remind you that no Aggie has to struggle alone. There is a network of support and care here at Texas A&M.   Host Elizabeth Drake sits down with the Student Assistance Services (SAS) team inside Texas A&M's Student Life for an honest conversation about the mental health challenges college students face and the resources that exist to help them through it.  SAS serves as a landing place for Aggies who may need a hand up, but aren't sure where to turn. Think of them as problem solvers who help make a university of 80,000 feel a little smaller, whether you're dealing with financial stress, relationship struggles, academic overwhelm, or something you can't quite put into words yet. The team breaks down the real signs that it might be time to reach out, tackles the stigma that keeps too many students suffering in silence, and explains what actually happens when you walk through their door for the first time & more. It's okay to not be okay, and SAS is here to help you figure out the next step. Want to reach SAS? Visit Suite 209 in the Student Services Building, call (979) 845-3113, email studentlife@tamu.edu, or submit a Tell Somebody report at tellsomebody.tamu.edu.
