ZARABEN.ORG Studio presents Torah Teaching, “B‘Midbar“ which means “In the wilderness,” this episode discusses the importance of attitude and perspective in overcoming challenges, using the example of the Sons of Israel in the wilderness. It then delves into the story of Elkanah, Hannah, and Peninnah, highlighting the significance of obedience, submission, and the role of men and women in a household. The discussion emphasizes the importance of understanding and following YHVH’s Commandments. Elkanah, a man with two wives, Hannah and Peninnah, visits the temple of YHVH annually as required by the Torah. Despite Elkanah’s love and double portions for Hannah, she remains barren and is tormented by Peninnah, who provokes her relentlessly. Hannah’s sorrow and fasting are not alleviated by Elkanah’s gifts, as she desires a child, not material possessions. Hannah, deeply sorrowful and broken, prays to YHVH for a son, promising to dedicate him to YHVH as a Nazarite. Eli, the priest, mistakes her silent prayer for drunkenness. Hannah clarifies her broken spirit and abstention from alcohol, and Eli blesses her, hoping YHVH will grant her request. Hannah, after years of barrenness, prayed to Yahweh for a child and vowed to dedicate him to YHVH’s service. When her prayer was answered and she gave birth to Samuel, she fulfilled her vow by bringing him to the temple to serve YHVH for the rest of his life. This story highlights the importance of keeping vows, especially those made in times of affliction, and the transformative power of submission to YHVH.
