A Textbook Crohn's Case My GI Doctor Missed| Ep. 15

Why I Fired My GI Doctor When I first became sick, my GI doctor blamed my symptoms on my lifestyle and treated me for ulcers and acid reflux. I trusted him, but I kept getting worse. It was not until a severe episode sent me to the emergency room that another doctor first mentioned Crohn’s disease. That question led me to seek a new gastroenterologist, finally get the right diagnosis, and start understanding how serious the inflammation had become. In this episode, I share why I decided to leave my first GI doctor, what happened after I was diagnosed, and how the experience changed the way I approach medical care. I also talk about why it is so important to ask questions, seek another opinion when something does not feel right, and remember that advocating for yourself does not mean you are being difficult. In this episode: - Why my first diagnosis did not explain what was happening - The moment Crohn’s disease was first mentioned - How a second gastroenterologist found severe inflammation - Why prednisone only brought temporary relief - What led to emergency surgery for a bowel blockage - How this experience taught me to question, speak up, and keep looking for answers - My later discovery of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet This episode is for informational purposes only and is not medical advice. Can You Go White Water Rafting With Crohn’s Disease? | Ep. 13

A question came up recently about whether someone with Crohn’s disease can go white water rafting, and it immediately brought me back to a trip my husband and I took to Moab years ago. Thanks for reading Happy Gut For Life with Sherry Lipp! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Saying Yes to a Spontaneous Adventure It was one of those vacation decisions we did not think through too much. We were already on a road trip, the opportunity came up, and we decided to go for it. The river was beautiful, the trip was fun, and I am glad I did it. But there was also one moment that brought on a very familiar feeling for anyone who has lived with Crohn’s, colitis, or IBD: bathroom anxiety. The Extra Layer of Planning With Crohn’s When you live with digestive issues, adventure can come with a whole extra layer of thinking. Most people are focused on the scenery, the activity, or whether they are going to fall out of the raft. We may be thinking about those things too, but we are also thinking about bathrooms, food, timing, heat, hydration, and what happens if our body does something we cannot control. That does not mean we should avoid everything. But it does mean some adventures take more thought than they might for someone else. What This Episode Is Really About In this episode of Digestible Dialogues, I’m sharing the story of that rafting trip, including the moment that caught me off guard and what I wish I had thought about before getting on the water. I also talk about the food situation, why skipping meals before an outdoor activity is not always the safest choice, and how I would approach a trip like this differently now. This Is Not a “Don’t Do It” Story I don’t share this story to scare anyone away from doing adventurous things. It is actually the opposite. I believe people with Crohn’s and IBD can still have full, active, meaningful lives. But I also think it helps to be honest about the planning and the nerves that can come with saying yes to something outside your normal routine. Sometimes the answer is not, “Don’t do it.” Sometimes the answer is, “Think it through, prepare as best you can, and choose the version of the adventure that works for where you are right now.” Watch or Listen to the Full Episode Watch or listen to the full episode, and then let me know in the comments if you have ever taken on an outdoor adventure with Crohn’s, colitis, IBD, or another digestive condition. I would love to hear what helped you, what surprised you, and what you wish you had known before you went. Thanks for reading Happy Gut For Life with Sherry Lipp! Why Are Oats Allowed on mSCD But Not SCD? | Ep. 12

Ep. 12 - Why Are Oats Allowed on mSCD But Not SCD? A follower asked what is most confusing about diet, and the mSCD versus SCD question came up, specifically around oats. In this episode I break down why oats are off-limits on strict SCD, what mSCD actually means, and why oats keep showing up as one of the most popular foods people reintroduce. I cover the carbohydrate structure logic behind SCD, where mSCD shows up in clinical nutritional therapy programs, how the SCD community uses the term informally, and what the research actually says about oats, soluble fiber, beta-glucan, gut health, and heart health. I also talk through the differences between steel-cut, rolled, and sprouted oats for anyone navigating a sensitive gut. This episode is for informational purposes only and is not medical advice. A Gut-Healing Starch? Yes, Really. | Ep. 9

If you’ve been following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet or a similar approach for managing IBD, you might think all starches are off-limits. But what if I told you that some starches can actually support your gut lining, reduce inflammation, and help you stay in remission? In today’s episode of Digestible Dialogues, I’m diving into one of the most misunderstood food groups for those of us with gut issues: resistant starch. I’ll walk you through: * What resistant starch is—and why it’s different from the “bad” kind * How it supports butyrate production (aka your gut’s secret weapon) * Which types are SCD-friendly (hint: they’re not as rare as you think) * Smart food pairings for digestion and microbiome support * My personal approach to RS2, RS3, and Bifidobacterium after 20+ years of healing 💡 Plus, I’ve created a quick reference guide for you with SCD-legal resistant starch sources and a 3-day sample meal plan to get started. 📥 Download the free PDF here →https://happygutforlife.substack.com/p/a-gut-healing-starch-yes-really This episode is all about building a more resilient gut—not just avoiding triggers. If you’re ready to go beyond elimination and start nourishing your microbiome, I think you’ll find this one empowering. As always, I’d love to hear your take. Have you tried incorporating resistant starches? Did it help? Hit reply or leave a comment—I read every one. This is a public episode. Beyond Elimination: Discover the Power of Healing Foods for a Happy Gut! | Ep. 8

When we think about healing our gut, the conversation often focuses on what not to eat. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) outlines foods to eliminate, and for many, restriction becomes the main focus. But what if we shifted our mindset? Instead of just avoiding "illegal" foods, we should emphasize gut-healing foods that actively repair the gut lining and support digestion. That’s exactly what I explored in the latest episode of Digestible Dialogues, where we go beyond restriction and focus on restoration. Gut Healing: More Than Just Avoiding Certain Foods Many people believe that simply removing grains, refined sugar, and certain carbohydrates is enough to restore gut health. But true gut healing requires nourishing the body with nutrient-dense foods that actively repair and strengthen the digestive system. Here are some of the top gut-healing foods and nutrients that can make a real difference in your gut health journey: ✅ Bone Broth: A Gut-Healing Powerhouse Rich in collagen, gelatin, and amino acids, bone broth helps repair the gut lining, reduce inflammation, and support digestive health. Regular consumption can aid those dealing with leaky gut syndrome, IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), and digestive discomfort. ✅ Vitamin A: Essential for Gut Lining Repair Vitamin A plays a vital role in gut barrier integrity and immune function. Found in foods like grass-fed liver, egg yolks, and orange vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash), it supports intestinal health and reduces gut permeability. ✅ L-Glutamine: Strengthening the Gut Wall An essential amino acid, L-glutamine helps repair the intestinal lining, reduce inflammation, and improve gut permeability. You can find it in cabbage, bone broth, grass-fed meats, and spinach. ✅ Zinc-Rich Foods: Boosting Gut and Immune Health Zinc plays a crucial role in gut healing, immune function, and cell repair. Oysters, grass-fed beef, pumpkin seeds, and chickpeas are excellent sources of bioavailable zinc to support digestive health. ✅ Pairing Foods for Maximum Absorption How you eat is just as important as what you eat. Pairing healthy fats with fat-soluble vitamins (like vitamin A and D) enhances nutrient absorption. Try combining avocados, ghee, or olive oil with carrots, eggs, or fatty fish for better digestion and gut repair. Gut Healing is About Building, Not Just Eliminating One of the biggest takeaways from this discussion is that gut healing isn’t just about restriction—it’s about replenishment and nourishment. When we only focus on what’s off-limits, we risk missing out on powerful foods that support digestion, repair the gut lining, and improve gut microbiome balance. That’s the core philosophy behind my IBD F.O.O.D. Roadmap class! In this course, we go beyond just eliminating foods and dive deep into gut-nourishing meals, personalized food plans, and sustainable gut health strategies. 🚀 If you're ready to shift from restriction to restoration, join the waiting list here:👉 Sign up now Your Gut-Healing Journey Starts Today If you feel stuck in a cycle of food restriction, it's time to reframe your approach.
