Building the Tool Belt Generation with Dr. Marsha Cale

In this episode of Trades & Triumphs, Dr. Marsha Cale, CEO of the New Horizons Regional Education Center, discusses the growing demand for career and technical education and the changing perception of skilled trades among students and families. New Horizons serves roughly 1,350 high school students each year across 26 career pathways, ranging from welding, electrical and machining to firefighting, healthcare, IT and marine technology. With applications exceeding available seats in many programs, Cale explains why expanding access to hands-on education has become increasingly important for both students and the Hampton Roads workforce.   Cale also explores the critical role employers can play in building the next generation of skilled workers, from advising on curriculum and technology to mentoring students, offering internships and simply getting in front of young people earlier. She argues that career awareness needs to begin as early as middle school, when students are already making choices that can influence their high school pathways. As interest in skilled trades grows, she sees an opportunity for education and industry to work much more closely together.  Pasted text Looking ahead, Cale envisions New Horizons taking an even larger role in preparing students for Hampton Roads' maritime, defense and manufacturing industries. That includes exposing students to shipbuilding, supply chains and high-demand fields such as sheet metal, pipefitting, marine coating and NDT. Ultimately, the conversation is about more than filling jobs. It is about giving students meaningful pathways, helping employers build a sustainable talent pipeline and ensuring young people understand the opportunities available in their own region.  Visit www.maritimejobsva.com to discover what career and training opportunities are right for you in the Hampton Roads maritime industry.  The Hampton Roads Maritime Training System, led by the Hampton Roads Workforce Council as the Lead System Entity, was established using a $11 million Good Jobs Challenge Grant awarded by the Economic Development Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce. Building Hampton Roads’ Maritime Talent Pipeline with Whitney Lester

In this episode, we sit down with Whitney Lester of the Hampton Roads Workforce Council for a behind-the-scenes look at how the region is tackling one of its biggest challenges: building a sustainable skilled-trades pipeline for the maritime industry. Whitney explains how the Council—one of Virginia’s 14 workforce boards and now the largest after a regional merger—moved beyond traditional workforce services to create an employer-led, data-driven system that aligns hiring demand with training supply. From a $663K Go Virginia grant that launched dedicated talent roles, to an $11M federal Good Jobs Challenge award that helped spark the Hampton Roads Maritime Training System, the conversation covers what’s working: employer and training-provider collaboratives, removing barriers for individual trainees, expanding training capacity, and elevating “career pathways over jobs.” The result is a more coordinated regional approach—one that’s earning national attention and continuing to evolve as Hampton Roads builds what’s next together.
