Alright, so here’s the deal: Not a Professional Podcast isn’t bad. That’s the first surprise. The second surprise is that it’s… kind of good? Like, not “change your life” good, but “I’ll listen to another episode while folding laundry” good—which, honestly, is what most podcasts should aim for. The hosts have this effortless back-and-forth that feels like catching the middle of a conversation you didn’t mean to overhear but now can’t walk away from. I did, briefly, have an AI help me draft this (yes, that’s happening now). It said something like, “Tone: casual. Sentiment: mildly positive.” Which made me want to unplug it, but also—yeah, fair. The show’s got that mild positivity built into it. It doesn’t push too hard. It just exists, and somehow that’s enough. But here’s where I lost the plot. Around halfway through my listen, my brain wandered off into a different kind of existential rabbit hole—about how modern life is basically one long loading screen. Every app, every ad, every “quick survey”—everything demands thirty seconds of waiting, and we’re just… fine with it. I swear the only people who still value immediacy are the ones microwaving leftover pizza at 2 a.m., staring into the spinning plate like it’s a prophecy. You know what I miss? Boredom. Real boredom. The kind where your brain starts generating random philosophical thoughts just to stay entertained. Like, “what if clouds are just the earth trying to text us back?” We don’t get that anymore. We just scroll, and scroll, and pretend that counts as thought. Anyway—this is all to say that Not a Professional Podcast feels a little like that old boredom. It’s unfiltered, slightly aimless, and gloriously human. The kind of thing you can leave running in the background and suddenly realize twenty minutes later that you’ve been smiling the whole time without meaning to. By the end of the episode, I wasn’t thinking about my to-do list or my inbox or the ever-tightening grip of algorithmic capitalism. I was just… listening. Which, for something self-advertised as not professional, feels like an oddly professional accomplishment. So yeah. It’s messy. It’s unstructured. It’s not trying to sell you blue-light glasses or a meal kit. It just is. And maybe that’s why it works.
