    The Proud Family: Who Teaches Black Kids Who They Are?

    A lot of us learned pieces of Black history from television before school ever made it feel alive. For me, The Proud Family was one of those shows. In this episode of Magic, Movies AND Melanin, I’m going back to three episodes that tried to teach Penny, and the kids watching her, something about who we are and how we understand people whose lives may look different from ours. We’re revisiting “I Had a Dream,” “Seven Days of Kwanzaa,” and “Culture Shock” and looking at what each episode gets right, where some of those lessons get complicated, and what hits differently watching them as an adult. That means talking about Black history beyond the classroom, the way family tradition carries culture, and how The Proud Family handled a Pakistani Muslim family during a period when American media was full of post-9/11 fear and stereotypes. There are also some harder questions sitting underneath all of that. Who gets treated as desirable? Who becomes the joke? What does the show say about darker-skinned girls, class, family roles, and the pressure Penny feels to be the reasonable one in the room? I love The Proud Family. That’s exactly why I think it’s worth looking at closely! Who teaches Black kids who they are? And what happens when one of those teachers is the TV in the living room?     The Cheetah Girls 2: Can Friendship Survive the Glow-Up?

    The Cheetah Girls 2 gave us Barcelona, “Strut,” bigger musical numbers and a sequel that somehow feels completely different from the movie we met these girls in three years earlier. But underneath all of that, this is really a movie about four friends getting older and realizing they may not want the same things anymore. On this episode of Magic, Movies and Melanin, I’m going back to Barcelona to talk about how much changed between 2003 and 2006, from the music and fashion to the way the girls themselves were presented. I get into the bigger production, why filming in Spain mattered, some interesting casting choices, and Raven-Symoné’s very noticeable evolution between the first and second movies. And because I clearly cannot watch a Disney Channel movie like a normal person, we also need to discuss what some of those styling choices were trying to tell us, how the group dynamic changes once everybody starts finding their own path, and whether The Cheetah Girls 2 still hits nearly twenty years later. Because maybe growing up together is easy. Growing in the same direction? That’s where things get complicated.     Sister, Sister: Can You Grow Up Without Growing Apart? | Season 4 Premiere

    Can you grow up without growing apart? Magic, Movies & Melanin is back for Season 4, and we’re doing something a little different this time. TV is officially in the mix! For the season premiere, let’s goes back to Sister, Sister and looks at three episodes from different points in Tia and Tamera’s lives: “You Are So Beautiful,” “A Separate Peace,” and “Home Sweet Dorm.” Watching them back-to-back as an adult tells a story the show never really announces out loud. Two girls who spent so much of their time figuring out who they were together eventually had to figure out who they were apart. We’re talking about identity, the need for your own space, leaving home, and what Sister, Sister gave Black kids who got to grow up watching Tia and Tamera do the same. And underneath all of it is a question that hits a little differently once you’re grown: How do you let the people you love change without mistaking that change for losing them? Welcome to Season 4!     Good Burger (1997) is one of the most memorable Nickelodeon comedy movies of the 90s, starring Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. In the Season 3 finale of Magic, Movies and Melanin, we revisit this cult classic and talk about why Good Burger STILL lives rent-free in the minds of so many 90s kids and Black millennials. In this episode we break down the plot of Good Burger (1997), revisit the dynamic between Ed and Dexter, and talk about the cultural impact of Kenan & Kel during Nickelodeon’s peak era. We also get into the power of 90s nostalgia and why movies like Good Burger continue to resonate with Black millennials today.     Disney Channel gave us a Black superhero family in 2000 and somehow people still don’t talk about it enough. In this episode, we go back to Up, Up and Away and really sit with it. The Marshall family, the pressure to have powers, the low budget effects that still made it feel special, and the cultural impact of seeing a Black family save the day on Disney. We break down the plot twists, Scott faking his strength, the villain’s wild plan, and whether this movie still holds up in the era of Marvel dominance.     The Color of Friendship Review: Disney, Apartheid, and the Racism We Were Taught to Ignore
