Sean's Year in Morton — A Rotary Youth Exchange Story

Send Ben a message, he'd love to hear from you. What does it feel like to leave your home in Busan, South Korea, land in the cornfields of Central Illinois, and call it home for a year? In this episode, we sit down with Sean Kim — a high school senior from South Korea who spent nearly 12 months in Morton as part of the Rotary International Youth Exchange program — along with Sue Colby, Youth Exchange Chair for Rotary District 6460, to wrap up one of the most meaningful episodes we've recorded here at MUSE. Sean talks openly about arriving in Morton expecting Chicago suburbs and finding cornfields instead, the loneliness of those first few months before finding his people, falling in love with Mexican food, and the Midwestern wave that caught him completely off guard. He gives honest, thoughtful advice to future exchange students, calls out the friends and families who made his year what it was, and shares what he's taking home with him — not just in his suitcase, but in who he's become. Sue walks us through how the Rotary Youth Exchange program actually works — from the three-year cycle of application, exchange, and rebound, to the challenges of rebuilding the program in a post-COVID world. She also shares why she believes this program is one of the most powerful tools for building peace that exists today. This one got a little emotional at the end. We think you'll understand why. 🔗 Learn more about Rotary Youth Exchange District 6460: www.rotarydistrict6460.org 📬 Have a story to share or want to sponsor the show? Mother-Daughter Designers: How Jute + Jade is Blooming on Queenwood Part I

Send Ben a message, he'd love to hear from you. What happens when a mother and daughter spend 31 years building a business together—and then decide to rebrand, relocate, and take the biggest leap of their careers? In this episode, we sit down with Ann and Kim, the mother-daughter team behind Jute + Jade, Morton's full-service floral and interior design studio. What started as Floral Designs in Tremont in 1994 has evolved into something much bigger—and they're about to move into a brand new space on Queenwood this June. Ann shares how she started the business on a whim when Kim was just in grade school, training for only one week at a Peoria florist before opening her doors. Kim takes us through her journey from picking up flower scraps off the floor as a kid to co-opting at the shop her senior year, to eventually buying into the business in 2016. We talk about the creative process behind custom interior design projects, the decision to rebrand after decades as Floral Designs, and the nerve-wracking week when five buyers competed for their dream building—the old Flickinger Tractor location on Queenwood. This is a story about mothers and daughters, small-town roots, and what it takes to grow a business for over three decades without losing your passion. Whether you're dreaming of working with family, planning a home refresh, or just love a good mother-daughter success story—this one's for you. Jute + Jade is moving to their new location at the former Flickinger Tractor building on Queenwood in Morton. Grand opening planned for mid-June 2025. Send Ben a message, he'd love to hear from you. What happens when you recreate an entire town in miniature—complete with local Morton businesses—and let kids run the show? In this episode, we sit down with Mallory Swanson, owner of Main Street Play Cafe, Morton's newest family destination that opened in February 2024. Mallory didn't just open another play space—she built a kid-sized version of our actual community, approaching local businesses to create miniature versions of their stores, offices, and services. Tradecraft: Joe's Recipe for the Cheat Code of Life Part II

Send Ben a message, he'd love to hear from you. What does it look like to leave behind a successful career in law and finance to pursue your true passion? In this episode, we sit down with Joe, the owner and sole operator of Tradecraft, Morton's newest bakery specializing in expertly crafted French laminated pastries.  Yum! Joe's journey is a bit unconventional. From East Peoria to Chicago, Philadelphia, Texas, and back again—he's been a law student, a university administrator, a Certified Financial Planner with an MBA, and now, a trained French pastry chef who found his home in Morton just three months ago. But here's what makes Joe's story truly special. Open just two days a week (Saturdays and Sundays, 8am-12pm), Joe runs Tradecraft entirely by himself because this isn't a job—it's a craft. It's a passion. And in his own words, it's how he found "the cheat code to life." We talk about what it takes to master the art of laminated pastries, why he chose Morton over the big city, the buildout process from farmers market to brick-and-mortar, and what it means to define success on your own terms. Joe's philosophy on quality over quantity, craftsmanship over commerce, and passion over profit will resonate with anyone who's ever dreamed of doing what they love. Whether you're a croissant connoisseur, an aspiring entrepreneur, or someone searching for permission to pursue your passion—this conversation is for you. Tradecraft is located in Morton, Illinois, and is open Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-12pm.  ( https://www.tradecraftbakeshop.com/about ) Location:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/hrSjgg6RS13sTc1F6 108 E. Rooted in Morton: Todd Staley on Business, Family, and Community Part II

Send Ben a message, he'd love to hear from you. In this episode of Morton MUSE & News, we sit down with Todd Staley, the heart and hands behind Staley Lawncare and Landscaping. Todd isn’t just a business owner—he’s the CEO, operator, foreman, and sometimes even the janitor of his thriving local company. But beyond the mowing stripes and landscaping projects, Todd is a man deeply rooted in Morton, dedicated to family, community, and the people he works alongside. We talk about his journey from mowing lawns as a teenager to leading a multi-truck operation, the lessons he learned from his parents, and how he carries those values into his business today. Todd shares candid stories about the challenges of running a small-town company—weather, employees, and all—and why he sees his role as more than making a yard look good. For Todd, it’s also about mentoring, giving second chances, and making Morton a better place, one lawn (and one person) at a time. If you love hearing about hometown businesses, grit, and the good people who help a community thrive, this is an episode you won’t want to miss. “Hey friends!
