    Episode #137 Activity Isn't Revenue

You've done the panels. The podcast guest spots. The thought leadership posts that get hundreds of likes. The coffee catch-ups with every contact who'll give you fifteen minutes. By every measure that matters in a networking sense, you are doing it right.   So why hasn't a single one of those relationships turned into a matter, a referral, or a line of billable revenue?   That's the question at the centre of this episode, and it's costing more mid-to-senior lawyers their business case for partnership than almost anything else.   Here's the mistake I see most often: either no business development at all, or so much of it there's no time left to close anything. Both versions look like work. Neither builds a business case.   That's because Business Development and Business Generation are not the same thing, and treating them as interchangeable is exactly what's keeping the revenue numbers flat.   Business Development is the planting and the nurturing — networking, thought leadership, speaking, content creation. It's connection and relationship: building trust, showing up consistently, becoming known. Business Generation is the harvest — originating matters, closing deals, referrals, the moment a relationship turns into billable revenue.   One is activity. The other is results. One is comfortable, because it's relationship-stage. The other is uncomfortable, because it's conversion-stage — the moment the fear shows up: fear of being salesy, fear of being seen as pushy, fear of ruining a relationship you've spent months building, fear of what it means if they say no.   None of that fear means you're bad at this. It means no one ever taught you the difference between the two skills, or gave you a way to move between them without it costing you the relationship.   In this episode, I walk through exactly that: the real distinction between BD and BG, and the blueprint for building a business generation pipeline that doesn't rely on luck or charm.   P.S. Enrolment for the September class of Be The First — built for mid-to-senior black lawyers ready to do exactly this — is opening soon. Episode #136 Setting boundaries

There is a word that high-performing Black lawyers consistently struggle to say. A word that, when they learn to use it, transforms their careers, their health, and the way people treat them at work. That word is no. I know. You already know this. You've heard it before. So here's the real question: why aren't you saying it? Because the cost of not saying it is higher than you think. Not just the missed sleep and the mounting overwhelm. Not just the deadlines that slip and the inbox that never empties. The real cost is this: you will not get promoted until you learn how to set boundaries. In Episode 136 of the Legal Imposters Podcast, I'm talking about boundaries — what they actually are, why you're not setting them, and exactly how to start.   Here's what we cover: - What setting a boundary actually means (hint: it's simpler than you think, and it starts with a decision) - The signs that you've already crossed the line — from the overwhelm and the panic to the missed opportunities and the things still waiting for you - The real reasons you keep saying yes — and why "I'm expected to" and "I don't want to let people down" are keeping you stuck - A four-part framework for how to set boundaries that actually hold - How to position your no — the non-negotiable no, the conditional no, the strategic no, and yes, the strategic yes - How to handle the discomfort that comes with doing this for the first time This episode is for you if your inbox is a mess, you're being chased for tasks, you've never once said no to a file coming in, and somewhere in the back of your mind you know that something has to change. Setting a boundary isn't about letting people down. It's about deciding you're no longer willing to let yourself down. Happy listening --- P.S. If you're mid to senior level and boundaries are something you consistently struggle with, I can help you with that inside Be The First. Inside BTF, I'll support you through the discomfort of doing this differently, help you understand your numbers, and give you the tools to take back control of your time. Enrolment for the September 2026 class opens Monday 13 July. Book your free strategy call here: 👉 https://calendly.com/carolineflanagan/be-the-first_free-strategy-call

Everyone procrastinates a little. But when it's a common feature of how you work, it's time to do something about it.   Tasks on your to do list growing mouldy and old. Missed deadlines. Being repeatedly chased for tasks you said you would do. Neglected to-dos preying on your mind in the early hours of the morning. The feeling of dread every time you think about a project. Episode #133 How to prepare for interview

If you're applying for a role or preparing for an upcoming interview you're going to want to listen to this episode. if you're not, save this episode so you can find it when the time comes, because this one is a game changer Today we're talking about how to prepare for interviews. Not what to say in an interview. But how you say it.  Because communicating your skills, experience and fit for a role isn't just about the words you choose. It's about the energy you transmit when you delivery those words. You can be the best fit on paper, but if this is communicated with uncertainty and doubt you could lose out to someone far less qualified but way more sure. I want to make sure this doesn't happen to you. What you won't get in this episode is strategy - what to say or how to answer specific questions at interview. But here's what you will get: the piece you've been overlooking in your preparation and delivery that will raise your interview performance to another level: Mindset Here's what we cover: What mindset is and why it's so important to get right  The exact mindset I recommend for both preparation stage and interview stage  How to adopt the mindset you need, even when it doesn't feel true  You'll come away feeling more confident about yourself as a candidate and better equipped to perform in every interview and massively improve your chances of success as a result Happy listening Caroline P.S. If you're not winning the roles and attracting the opportunities you deserve, one of the most important things to work on is your mindset. I help you do this inside Be The First Membership for Black Lawyers. The next enrolment period is coming soon. Be the first to know by joining the Waitlist. Click here to join.

Episode #130 The 10 Stages of Imposter Syndrome

Do you have Imposter Syndrome?  Before you jump straight to a "yes" or "no", listen to episode 130 of Legal Imposters.  There are 10 stages of Imposter Syndrome and whether your goal is progression or simply excelling at what you do, it's important to know the stage you're at and how  to move closer to the solution. If you've never heard of Imposter Syndrome or have no idea what it is (Stage 1: Ignorance), figuring out your next step (finding out what it is) and taking that step today is pretty straight forward.  But if you're at Rejection (stage 3) or Resignation (stage 6) for example, knowing the next step and the fastest way to get there may not be so clear. Episode 130 is goingit change that.  As with all personal and professional development, awareness is the first and often the most powerful step. Seeing that you've been stuck in Resistance (stage 5) for years, for example, can be illuminating. When you know and understand, you feel motivated to do something about it. This is great news for your confidence and fantastic news for your career. You're one step closer to getting unstuck. And awareness isn't the only benefit to knowing the 10 stages and understanding where you are right now. One other benefit is perspective - you're going to stop seeing youir Imposter Syndrome in isolation, and start seeing it in the broader context of the Imposter Syndrome experience as a whole, and how your relationship with it can (and will) shift over time. Which brings me to the biggest benefit of all -hope.  If you think Imposter Syndrome is all about negativity and suffering, the 10 stages of Imposter Syndrome shows you otherwise. You'll discover that it's possible not just to overcome Imposter Syndrome, but to be Empowered (stage 9) by it and even Enlightened (stage 10) by it - something you never could have imagined. Whichever stage you're at, you're about to discover that you your experience of Imposter Syndrome can be a positive and uplifting one when you have the right tool. I know this because I've done it.  And if I can do it, so can you. Happy listening. P.S. Inside Be The First Membership you will learn to overcome Imposter Syndrome so you have the confidence to show up to your potential. This doesn't just change how you work. It changes how you feel at work. Never again the only.  Always the first. Doors to the Membership open May 1st at 12pm (UK) for 10 days only. Be ready. Keep listening for details.
