    Deacon Tom Bradley — permanent deacon of the Diocese of Des Moines, retired U.S. Army colonel, and author — talks with Bo Bonner about his new novel, Dancing Without Applause: The Land Remembers. The book follows Lawrence and Irene, born around 1915 into a German Catholic family and an Irish Catholic family in central Iowa, as they grow up, fall in love, and marry despite the tension between their two communities. Deacon Tom explains the history behind that tension: Irish immigrants often arrived first but with fewer resources, while German immigrants later bought up farmland more quickly, breeding resentment on both sides — a reminder that ethnic friction in America is nothing new. Spanning 1915 to 1962, through World War I, World War II, and Korea, the story tackles serious themes including poverty, alcoholism, abuse, and the secrets families keep, while showing a simple, steadfast faith: God is present in every family's struggles. The book continues the "without applause" theme of Deacon Tom's first novel, Marching Without Applause: The Officers Who Defied a Nation's Doubt, about the 1917 training camp for Black Army officers at Fort Des Moines — stories of people living faithfully without recognition.     Womb to Tomb: How One Parish Respect Life Committee Serves - Donice Cariglino - 09/28/2026

    Donice Cariglino, a parishioner at St. Anthony Parish on the south side of Des Moines for more than 50 years, joins Deacon Mark Campbell to kick off Respect Life Month, the USCCB's annual October call to prayer and awareness for the dignity of every human life. Donice shares how her daughter's passion for the pro-life cause challenged her to look closely at what her everyday choices support, and why — as a lifelong teacher and first-grade catechist — she believes forming children early prepares them for the pressures they'll face in college and beyond. She and Deacon Mark discuss abortion, euthanasia and assisted suicide, and homelessness as connected issues of human dignity. St. Anthony's Respect Life Committee started as a small group of twelve — "Jesus started with twelve, too" — and serves "womb to tomb": cooking meals for the Catholic family shelter several times a year, sending high school students to the March for Life, and accompanying a woman who walked into Mass asking for help, staying by her side for a full year until her death. St. Anthony's Respect Life Mass is this Saturday, October 3, at the 8:30 a.m. Mass. If your parish doesn't have a Respect Life Committee, Donice's advice is simple: start small.
