The Village We Forgot How to Build | Mun Yee Kelly | Golden Hour, Episode 67

What happened to the village we're always told it takes to raise a child? And what if it hasn't disappeared so much as we've forgotten how to participate in it? In this episode of Golden Hour, Dr. O sits down with entrepreneur, community builder, and new mother Mun Yee Kelly for a conversation about connection, motherhood, and the quiet isolation of modern life. After three days of labor, an unexpected hospital transfer, and a postpartum recovery that left her dependent on others in ways she had never experienced, Mun Yee discovered something profound about receiving care. For someone accustomed to being strong, independent, and the person others relied on, allowing herself to be supported became its own lesson. Together, Dr. O and Mun Yee explore why social media can make us feel seen without making us feel less alone, how individualism shapes our expectations of motherhood, and why asking for help can be surprisingly difficult—even when people genuinely want to give it. They also discuss the small, often overlooked interactions that build lasting community, the importance of making space for families in everyday life, and Mun Yee's vision for bringing mothers together across different stages of parenthood. Because a village isn't simply something we wish we had. It's something we create, sustain, and learn to receive from. #GoldenHourPodcast #Motherhood #PostpartumSupport #CommunityBuilding #Matrescence #MaternalMentalHealth Thank you for listening ❤ PODCAST LINKS: - Podcast Website: https://goldenhour.fm - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GoldenHourFM?ref=bs - Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/golden-hour/id1768847425?ref=bs - Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/goldenhourfm?ref=bs - RSS: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/2401875.rss?ref=bs SOCIAL LINKS: - Instagram: https://instagram.com/goldenhour.fm?ref=bs - Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@goldenhour.fm?ref=bs

The Future of Women's Health: AI, Medical Bias & Personalized Care | Dr. Nasim Afsar | Golden Hour, Episode 66

What happens when medicine becomes more technologically advanced without becoming more responsive to the people it serves? In this episode of Golden Hour, Dr. O sits down with Dr. Nasim Afsar, MD, MBA, physician executive, former Chief Health Officer at Oracle, and author of Intelligent Health, to explore why healthcare needs more than new technology. It needs a fundamentally different approach to understanding patients, supporting clinicians, and designing systems of care. Drawing on her experience as both a practicing physician and healthcare executive, Dr. Afsar reflects on the early moments that exposed the failures of our healthcare system—and why physician burnout cannot be addressed through individual resilience alone. The conversation turns to a particularly consequential question: What happens when the evidence guiding medical care doesn't adequately represent women? From the language of “atypical” heart attack symptoms to the trial-and-error nature of many perimenopause and menopause treatments, Dr. Afsar and Dr. O examine how historical gaps in research continue to shape clinical decisions today. They also explore the promise and limitations of artificial intelligence in healthcare: how better use of data could support more personalized treatment, why technology is only as useful as the information and intentions behind it, and what it might mean to design care around the realities of people's lives. In this conversation: Why physician burnout reflects deeper problems in healthcare designHow technology can improve care while introducing new burdens and risksWhy women's symptoms have historically been measured against male-centered researchThe limitations of trial-and-error approaches to menopause treatmentWhat AI might make possible in more personalized women's healthcareWhy housing, food access, and other everyday circumstances must be part of the healthcare conversationThe vision behind Dr. Afsar's book, Intelligent HealthThis is a conversation about moving beyond the assumption that more technology automatically means better medicine—and imagining a healthcare system that understands the whole person. Guest: Dr. Nasim Afsar, MD, MBA Book: Intelligent Health Hosted by Dr. Ono Nseyo, board-certified OB/GYN and host of Golden Hour. #GoldenHour #WomensHealth #HealthcareInnovation #ArtificialIntelligence #Menopause #PhysicianBurnout #PersonalizedMedicine #HealthEquity Thank you for listening ❤ PODCAST LINKS: - Podcast Website: https://goldenhour.fm - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GoldenHourFM?ref=bs - Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/golden-hour/id1768847425?ref=bs - Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/goldenhourfm?ref=bs - RSS: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/2401875.rss?ref=bs SOCIAL LINKS: - Instagram: https://instagram.com/goldenhour.fm?ref=bs - Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@goldenhour.fm?ref=bs

Your Pelvic Floor Is More Than Kegels: Sex, Bladder Leaks & Menopause | Dr. Tanya Goodrich | Golden Hour, Episode 65

What if leaking when you laugh isn't simply a sign of getting older? What if painful sex isn't something you have to endure? And what if the answer to better pelvic health involves much more than doing Kegels? In this episode of the Golden Hour, I'm joined by Dr. Tanya Goodrich, a doctor of physical therapy, founder of Healthy Pelvis Physical Therapy, and pelvic-health specialist with more than 15 years of experience helping women navigate bladder dysfunction, pelvic pain, sexual health, and the transitions of perimenopause and menopause. Together, we unpack the pelvic-floor symptoms women are often told to accept as normal—and the surprisingly practical ways to address them. We explore why urinary leakage isn't always simply a matter of muscle weakness, how your core and pelvic floor work together, what “just-in-case peeing” can teach us about bladder habits, and why painful intercourse deserves more than advice to relax. We also discuss vaginal estrogen, the connection between pelvic tension and sexual pleasure, constipation's unexpected role in pelvic health, and why menopause care should involve more than managing hot flashes. Tanya brings humor and memorable analogies to a part of women's health that has been treated as mysterious for far too long. And even after more than a decade practicing as an OB/GYN, I walked away with new ways to explain these concepts to my own patients. Because pelvic health isn't just about avoiding symptoms. It's about preserving comfort, movement, intimacy, and quality of life across decades. In this conversation: Bladder leakage, pelvic-floor coordination, and why Kegels aren't the whole answerHow perimenopause and menopause affect vaginal and urinary healthPainful sex, pelvic-floor tension, and the role of physical therapyThe connection between bladder habits, constipation, and sexual functionWhy it's never too late to seek pelvic-floor careConnect with Dr. Tanya Goodrich: Healthy Pelvis Physical Therapy: https://healthypelvis.com This conversation is for educational purposes and is not a substitute for individualized medical advice. #TheGoldenHourWithDrO #PelvicFloorHealth #Perimenopause #Menopause #PelvicPhysicalTherapy #WomensHealth #SexualHealth Thank you for listening ❤ PODCAST LINKS: - Podcast Website: https://goldenhour.fm - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GoldenHourFM?ref=bs - Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/golden-hour/id1768847425?ref=bs - Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/goldenhourfm?ref=bs - RSS: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/2401875.rss?ref=bs SOCIAL LINKS: - Instagram: https://instagram.com/goldenhour.fm?ref=bs - Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@goldenhour.fm?ref=bs

Pregnancy After Loss: Grief, Birth Trauma & the Maternal Mental Health Gap | Omaia CEO Nina Larsen | Golden Hour, Episode 64

What happens when a pregnancy ends in loss, but life keeps moving forward? And what happens when you become pregnant again while still grieving the child you lost? Nina Larsen is the CEO and co-founder of Omaia Health, an AI-enabled maternal mental health platform focused on supporting emotional well-being during pregnancy and postpartum. But her journey into maternal health began with something profoundly personal: the loss of her daughter, Nellie, during childbirth. In this deeply personal conversation, Nina shares the birth experience that changed her life, the trauma of feeling that something was wrong and not feeling heard, and what it meant to become pregnant again just months later. She describes living a “dual life”—profoundly grieving Nellie while doing everything she could to protect the pregnancy that followed. Dr. O and Nina explore the realities of pregnancy after loss, why grief rarely follows the timeline that families or healthcare systems expect, and the gaps between excellent medical monitoring and meaningful psychological support. They also discuss the fragmentation of maternal healthcare, Nina's path from lived experience to founding Omaia, and what it might look like to build a system that treats emotional well-being as an essential part of pregnancy and postpartum care—not an afterthought. Because a healthy pregnancy deserves more than physical monitoring alone. #PregnancyAfterLoss #BabyLoss #StillbirthAwareness #BirthTrauma #MaternalMentalHealth #PregnancyMentalHealth #PostpartumMentalHealth #WomensHealth #TheGoldenHour Thank you for listening ❤ PODCAST LINKS: - Podcast Website: https://goldenhour.fm - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GoldenHourFM?ref=bs - Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/golden-hour/id1768847425?ref=bs - Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/goldenhourfm?ref=bs - RSS: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/2401875.rss?ref=bs SOCIAL LINKS: - Instagram: https://instagram.com/goldenhour.fm?ref=bs - Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@goldenhour.fm?ref=bs

When Ambition Meets Motherhood: Losing—and Finding—Yourself Again | Meaghan Rose | Golden Hour, Episode 63

What happens when the life you worked incredibly hard to build changes you—and then ends? Meaghan Rose knows what it means to build while becoming. As the founder and former CEO of Roxbox, the pioneering jewelry rental subscription company later acquired by Signet Jewelers, Meaghan helped shape an era of direct-to-consumer brands while raising more than $20 million and becoming a mother of three along the way. Her children arrived alongside some of the biggest milestones of the business: one after her seed round, another after her Series A, and her third shortly before the company was sold. For years, Meaghan kept moving. She returned to work just two weeks after having her first child, carrying the unspoken belief that she needed to demonstrate that motherhood wouldn’t change anything. She built a company, led a team, raised a family—and learned, sometimes painfully, that external success doesn’t necessarily quiet the internal questions about whether you are doing enough or doing it right. Then the pace changed. After selling Roxbox and eventually leaving the company, Meaghan entered a transition she hadn't entirely anticipated. Without the identity and momentum of the company she had spent years building, she found herself confronting a different question: Who am I now? In this episode of The Golden Hour, Meaghan and Dr. O talk candidly about ambition, entrepreneurship, motherhood, imposter syndrome, leadership, matrescence and the strange discomfort of the seasons when you don't yet know what comes next. Meaghan reflects on learning to celebrate milestones instead of immediately moving the bar; why she would rather be wrong following her own instincts than wrong because she copied someone else; how parenting helped her reconnect with emotions she had learned to suppress; and why periods that look unproductive from the outside may actually be where some of our most important growth happens. She also shares the realization that stopped her: after years of using her married name with her family and “Meaghan Rose” professionally, she began to feel as though she could barely remember the woman behind her professional name. Finding her again didn't mean returning to who she used to be. It meant making room for all of her—the founder, mother, builder, artist, intense problem-solver and woman who simply loves joy, color and play—as she begins building again. This is a conversation about what we achieve. But perhaps even more importantly, it is about who we become along the way. The Golden Hour with Dr. O explores women’s health and the transitions that shape our lives—from your first period to your last. #Motherhood #WorkingMothers #WomenInLeadership #FemaleFounders #Matrescence #Entrepreneurship #Identity #TheGoldenHour Thank you for listening ❤ PODCAST LINKS: - Podcast Website: https://goldenhour.fm - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GoldenHourFM?ref=bs - Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/golden-hour/id1768847425?ref=bs - Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/goldenhourfm?ref=bs - RSS: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/2401875.rss?ref=bs SOCIAL LINKS: - Instagram: https://instagram.com/goldenhour.fm?ref=bs - Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@goldenhour.fm?ref=bs

Why Breastfeeding Is So Hard in America: Human Milk, Paid Leave & the Care Gap | Michelle Nirumandrad | Golden Hour, Episode 62

Breastfeeding is often framed as an individual choice—and when it doesn’t work, an individual failure. But what if we’re looking at the wrong problem? Michelle Nirumandrad is the founder of Human Milk-y Way, a platform using technology, community, and data to rethink how we value and support human milk. She is also a mother of five and a longtime milk donor who estimates she has donated approximately 40,000 ounces over the past decade. Her work began with something much more personal. After struggling with her own lactation experience, Michelle found herself with pumped milk her baby wouldn’t take. She offered it to families in her community—and watched it disappear almost immediately. More mothers kept reaching out. What began by happenstance became years of deliberately pumping and donating milk, and eventually a much larger question: Why are families working so hard to access something our healthcare and social systems say they value? In this episode of The Golden Hour, Michelle and Dr. O explore breastfeeding and human milk far beyond the usual conversation about individual feeding choices. They discuss the steep learning curve families encounter after birth; disparities in access to donor milk; the history of wet nursing and formula; why human milk remains surprisingly understudied; and what it says about women’s health that we have specialists for nearly every body system but are only beginning to imagine what a “lactologist” could look like. Michelle also makes the economic case for treating lactation as infrastructure. She explains how Human Milk-y Way is being designed to translate individual feeding outcomes into data that healthcare systems, employers, and other stakeholders can understand—from healthcare spending to employee retention and broader social impact. The conversation also turns to paid leave, workplace support, postpartum continuity of care, and why preparing for lactation should begin before the baby arrives rather than after families are already overwhelmed. For clinicians, there is another important question: what would change if lactation consultants were treated as integral members of the maternal healthcare team rather than specialists brought in only after something has gone wrong? Because perhaps the problem was never simply whether women wanted to breastfeed. Perhaps we built a society that calls breastfeeding important while making it extraordinarily difficult to sustain. The Golden Hour with Dr. O explores women’s health across the reproductive lifespan—from your first period to your last. #Breastfeeding #HumanMilk #Lactation #PostpartumCare #PaidLeave #MaternalHealth #WomensHealth #TheGoldenHour Thank you for listening ❤ PODCAST LINKS: - Podcast Website: https://goldenhour.fm - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GoldenHourFM?ref=bs - Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/golden-hour/id1768847425?ref=bs - Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/goldenhourfm?ref=bs - RSS: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/2401875.rss?ref=bs SOCIAL LINKS: - Instagram: https://instagram.com/goldenhour.fm?ref=bs - Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@goldenhour.fm?ref=bs

Endometriosis, Medical Gaslighting, and the “Parallel Life” of a High-Performing Founder | Keva Dine | Golden Hour, Episode 61

What happens when you spend decades learning how to navigate a body—and a healthcare system—that other people cannot see? Keva Dine is the founder and CEO of the Keva Dine Agency, a global creative recruitment firm. For more than 25 years, she has built a powerhouse career while living a parallel life with endometriosis and adenomyosis—a story she has never shared publicly until now. In this episode of The Golden Hour, Keva joins Dr. O for a candid conversation about the information women are too often left to find on their own. She reflects on recovering from an emergency C-section without meaningful preparation for what recovery would actually require; why her second postpartum experience looked radically different once she deliberately built an infrastructure of support; and the years she spent navigating endometriosis, surgeries, medical dismissal, second opinions, and care that often seemed more focused on fertility than on helping her live well in her body. Keva also challenges the language of being an “Endo Warrior.” Why should patients have to fight their clinicians, fight for information, or travel what she calls an “information underground highway” simply to understand their options? Dr. O and Keva explore what happens when self-advocacy becomes a prerequisite for receiving care—and what clinicians, families, and healthcare systems could do differently. This is a conversation about endometriosis and postpartum recovery. But it is also about something larger: what it costs women when the burden of assembling good care is placed back on them. What We Get Wrong About Babies, Bonding & Postpartum with Dr. Emily Little | Golden Hour, Episode 60

What if some of the things parents believe they should be able to do “naturally” were never meant to happen without other people? Dr. Emily Little is a developmental scientist, perinatal health expert, founder of Nurturally, and the “Baby Myth Buster.” Her work examines infant development, caregiver-infant bonding, physical touch, lactation, postpartum mental health, and the cultural practices that shape how we care for babies and their parents. In this episode of Golden Hour, Dr. O and Emily examine the gap between what biology actually asks of parents and what modern American parenthood expects from them. Emily explains the evolutionary story behind why breastfeeding can be functionally difficult—and why social support and shared knowledge were part of how humans adapted. They unpack the idea of instant bonding and the science suggesting that sometimes the behaviors of attachment can come before the feeling itself. They explore why skin-to-skin contact matters beyond the first “golden hour,” why babies aren't biologically designed around adult sleep and work schedules, and how a culture built around productivity has normalized separating parents and babies remarkably early. The conversation also moves beyond individual parenting choices to the systems surrounding them: workplace pumping policies, postpartum recovery, the loss of the village, racial inequities in maternal health, and what other cultures may understand about integrating babies into everyday life that the United States has forgotten. Because when biology and culture are in conflict, perhaps the question isn't why parents and babies aren't adapting better. Perhaps it's why we keep asking them to. #Postpartum #PostpartumHealth #NewbornCare #Breastfeeding #BabyBonding #MaternalHealth #FourthTrimester #Parenthood #GoldenHourPodcast Thank you for listening ❤ PODCAST LINKS: - Podcast Website: https://goldenhour.fm - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GoldenHourFM?ref=bs - Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/golden-hour/id1768847425?ref=bs - Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/goldenhourfm?ref=bs - RSS: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/2401875.rss?ref=bs SOCIAL LINKS: - Instagram: https://instagram.com/goldenhour.fm?ref=bs - Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@goldenhour.fm?ref=bs
