The Older You Get, the More These 10 Things Matter in Friendship.mp4

Have you ever stopped to think about the people you are drawn to in this season of your life and why? After a recent session with the Reclamation Circle, I found myself thinking about how much our friendship needs can change as we change. Life experiences such as grief, health challenges, career transitions, success, disappointments, aging, COVID, relocations, family disruptions, and our own healing can alter what we value and what we need in relationships. Life has a way of shifting and sifting many variables in our lives, changing our perspectives, our priorities, and even what we need from the people closest to us. During our session, we had an eye-opening conversation about friendships. It wasn't the typical conversation about toxic friends or deciding who needs to leave our lives. Instead, we looked at our own patterns, named what we need from relationships, and considered what the people we love may need from us. The conversation was so rich that I wanted to share it with you. In this episode, I explore 10 relational shifts we noticed, including growth over groans, curiosity over criticism, cultivation over chance, capacity over chemistry, interest over indifference, sharing space instead of stealing the spotlight, and faith over fear. But we went a step further. Instead of only asking, “What am I getting from my friendships?” we also asked:“What do people get when they get me?” Because healthy relationships aren't only about finding people who can meet our needs. They also invite us to examine how we show up and whether we offer others some of the same qualities we say we desire from them. As you listen, consider what you are drawn to in your relationships today, what may have changed, and what those changes might be teaching you about the person you are becoming. And I would love to hear from you: Which of these 10 resonates with you most? And what's #11? If you have a question about this conversation, send it to me. I may answer it in an upcoming After the Conversation episode. Religion, Roles & Rules: Are You Living by Choice or Compliance?

How much of your life are you really deciding, and how much has already been decided for you? In this episode of Deciding to Soar: Living Life Your Own Way, I explore three powerful forces that influence how we believe, who we believe we're allowed to be, and how we believe we're supposed to live: religion, roles, and rules. None of these are inherently harmful. Religion can ground us. Roles can help organize our lives. Rules can provide necessary structure, safety, and protection. But when we stop examining them, they can quietly become authorities in our lives and keep us confined to beliefs, identities, and expectations we may no longer consciously choose. Together, we'll explore three important questions: Who or what gave this authority over my life? Do I still consent to that authority? What is my unquestioned consent costing me? This is an invitation to examine what you've inherited, keep what continues to nourish and support you, renegotiate what needs more room, and release what no longer allows you to live fully and authentically. Listen, reflect, and then ask yourself: Knowing what I know now, what do I choose? The One Person Most Women Forget to Be Loyal To...

Were you taught to be loyal to everyone except yourself? Many of us learned to be loyal to our families, friends, communities, churches, organizations, cultures, and causes. But I don’t remember anyone teaching me what it meant to be loyal to myself. So what does self-loyalty actually look like? In this episode of Deciding to Soar: Living Life Your Own Way, I share four practices I’ve learned through mistakes, pain, healing, faith, and triumph: • Trust the truth of who you are. • Recognize that being loyal to yourself requires risk. • Choose relationships over rivalries. • Be guided and governed by God. Self-loyalty isn’t selfishness. It is honoring who you are without consistently betraying yourself, abandoning your gifts, or shrinking your divine design to satisfy everyone else. And sometimes the most courageous question we can ask is: Where am I asking other people to be loyal to me while I am still learning how to be loyal to myself? 👇 COMMENT: What does being loyal to yourself mean to you? 👉 SUBSCRIBE: Subscribe to Deciding to Soar for more conversations about living life your own way. 👉 JOIN: Join the newsletter for deeper reflections, encouragement, and resources to help you continue soaring. 👉 SHARE: Send this episode to someone who gives loyalty freely to everyone else and may need the reminder that they deserve their own loyalty too. Don’t Expect People to Stand By You When...

“A real friend would have stayed.” Maybe. But before we accuse someone of being disloyal, there is another question worth asking: What were we asking them to stand beside? Sometimes people don’t leave because we are struggling. Sometimes staying requires them to participate in behaviors, environments, or patterns they can no longer support. In this episode of Deciding to Soar: Living Life Your Own Way, I explore the complicated intersection of friendship, loyalty, accountability, boundaries, and personal agency. I invite people to consider the following questions? What happens when supporting a friend begins to require compromising your integrity? When does listening become an endless cycle of complaints without responsibility? When does helping repeatedly become enabling? What happens when disrespect becomes normalized or a relationship no longer has enough room for both people to grow? This conversation is not an argument for abandoning people during difficult seasons. Friendship needs grace, patience, compassion, and room for human imperfection. But healthy relationships also need honesty, reciprocity, accountability, safety, relational ethics, and choice. You’ll be invited to consider the relationships in your own life from both sides: not only who has failed to show up for you, but also how you are asking other people to show up for you. Because relationship longevity does not always equal relationship health. History does not automatically entitle someone to permanent access. And loyalty can become a leash when history keeps us connected to relationships we would never choose today. Listen with an open mind and perhaps a mirror nearby. 🎧 Listen to the full conversation. 💬 You can also join me in the comments on YouTube: Where do you believe loyalty ends and complicity begins? 👉If this episode gives you language for something you have experienced, share it with someone who may need this conversation. ✨Subscribe to Deciding to Soar: Living Life Your Own Way for conversations about relationships, transitions, leadership, healing, personal agency, and having the courage to live life on your own terms. When Your Life Needs All of You: Even Good News Has to Wait

We often think boundaries are ONLY necessary when something is negative, toxic, or unhealthy. But what happens when the news is good, the invitation is thoughtful, the person means well, and you simply don't have the capacity to receive, give, or attend one more thing? In this episode of Deciding to Soar: Living Life Your Own Way, I explore the emotional, mental, and spiritual weight of information and invitations AND why protecting your capacity during critical seasons of life is not selfish. It is great stewardship. In this episode, we explore how: Information Has Weight. Even good news, advice, invitations, and life updates require emotional and mental energy. Sometimes the issue isn't the content. It's capacity. One Request Becomes Part of an Accumulation, Someone may think, “It's only one phone call,” without realizing you may be receiving ten other requests for your time, attention, wisdom, and emotional presence. They experience their one request. You experience the accumulation. Some Seasons Require You to Withdraw. Retirement, reinvention, relationships, relocation, illness, grief, and other major decisions may require you to temporarily step back so you can hear yourself, discern what you need, and give your life your undivided attention.Protecting Your Capacity Is Stewardship. Your emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical resources are finite. "You cannot borrow tomorrow's energy to satisfy today's expectations."You Don't Have to Prove Your Need for a Boundary, You don't owe anyone your private story, your wounds, or an explanation before you're allowed to say no, not now, or I don't have capacity. Sometimes maintaining a boundary requires the spiritual courage to be misunderstood.Find Another Witness. We all deserve to be seen, heard, affirmed, and celebrated. But our need to be witnessed does not obligate one particular person to be our witness. When someone doesn't have capacity for us, emotional maturity allows us to honor their boundary and find another person who does. This conversation is for anyone navigating a season that requires more attention, discernment, or energy than other people may realize. It is also an invitation to extend compassion when someone else's boundary disappoints us. Remember ... Looking well doesn't mean someone isn't carrying something difficult. Before you finish this episode, I invite you to ask yourself: What does my life need from me right now? And: What might I need to temporarily let go of so I can give more of myself to myself? This week....• Do a capacity inventory. Notice what currently has access to your mind, heart, ears, time, and energy, and give yourself permission to make one adjustment. • Share this episode with someone who may need permission to protect their capacity without guilt or explanation. • Follow Deciding to Soar: Living Life Your Own Way on your favorite podcast platform so you don't miss our next conversation. • Join me on YouTube to continue the conversation, ask questions, and share what this season is teaching you. • Subscribe to my newsletter for deeper reflections, practical wisdom, and additional conversations about navigating the seasons of life that ask more of us. Not All Advice Is Good Advice: Why You Should Be Careful About Who Speaks Into Your Life

Have you ever received advice that sounded wise but didn't fit the life you were actually living? In this episode, I unpack an African proverb that has shaped the way I choose mentors, advisors, and trusted voices: "You see based on where you sit." Every one of us experiences the world through different "seats"—our race, age, faith, gender, responsibilities, life experiences, opportunities, and challenges. Those seats influence not only how we see the world but also the kind of wisdom we need. Together we'll explore why good advice isn't universal, how to recognize when advice is incomplete, and why surrounding yourself with informed people—not identical people—can transform the way you make decisions. If you've ever left a conversation feeling misunderstood, minimized, or discouraged, this episode will help you become more intentional about who you allow to shape your thinking. Because you deserve advice that honors your personhood, your purpose, and the realities you navigate every day. In This Episode• Why not all advice is good advice • Understanding the "seats" that shape perspective • Five questions to ask before accepting advice • Why informed advisors matter more than impressive advisors • Building a table of trusted voices If this episode resonates with you, please: ⭐ Follow the podcast so you never miss an episode. 📝 Leave a rating or review. Why Your Next Season Begins with Permission, Not Courage

Most people think they need more courage before making a life-changing decision. I believe they need something else first. Permission. In this episode, I explore why every meaningful change begins with giving yourself permission to ask, explore, and begin. You'll learn: • Why permission often comes before courage • How small decisions become transformational moments • Why "What if?" can become the doorway to your next chapter • How to stop waiting for someone else's approval • A simple way to begin building the life you were created to live If you're navigating a career transition, retirement, reinvention, or simply sensing that life is asking something different of you, I hope this conversation encourages you to take your first faithful step. The Job Everyone Thought Was Beneath Me...Set Me Free

Years ago, after earning my MBA and building a successful corporate career, I made a decision that confused almost everyone around me. I became an aerobics instructor. People questioned the choice because they evaluated it through the lens of status, prestige, and professional success. What they couldn't see was that the experience was preparing me for everything that would come next. In this episode, I share the five lessons that decision taught me and how they continue to shape every new season of my life. You'll discover: • Why the right fit matters more than prestige. • How to trust your own vision when others don't understand your choices. • Why money isn't the only way life pays you. • How to move forward even when you don't have a crowd cheering you on. • Why exploring different parts of your personality may be one of the greatest investments you'll ever make. If you're navigating a career transition, retirement, entrepreneurship, ministry, or simply asking, "What's next?" this conversation will encourage you to trust yourself and choose the path that aligns with who you are becoming. Because sometimes the decision everyone questions becomes the one that changes your life.
