Part 2 of 3 - Retired CDCR Secretary Ralph Diaz on the behind the scene politics of CDCR, the 2013 Pelican Bay Hunger Strike and more.

Behind the Badge and the Bureaucracy: A Conversation with Former CDCR Secretary Ralph Diaz What does it take to lead one of the largest and most complex correctional systems in the nation? Join us for an exclusive, in-depth conversation with former CDCR Secretary Ralph Diaz as he pulls back the curtain on a career that took him from the front lines as a Captain and Warden to the highest level of state leadership. This isn't just a retrospective—it’s a raw look at leadership, institutional hurdles, and the heavy toll of the badge. In this interview, Secretary Diaz won't hold back. He will share his firsthand experiences navigating some of the most pivotal and controversial chapters in modern corrections, including the historic inmate Hunger Strike, the cultural shift of the Norway Project, and the infamous Green Wall. But leading the CDCR is about much more than managing institutions; it requires surviving the political gauntlet of Sacramento. Diaz will offer his unfiltered perspective on what it really takes to balance the competing demands of the Capitol, CDCR Headquarters, the CCPOA, and the day-to-day realities faced by staff in the field. Most importantly, we will shine a light on the people behind the uniform. With corrections personnel facing unprecedented challenges, Secretary Diaz will tackle the critical issues of officer wellness, PTSD, and suicide prevention. We’ll explore how the department responds to these tragedies, the importance of vital training, and why preparing officers with an exit strategy for life after corrections is non-negotiable. Finally, he will share the crucial recommendations he would offer to the current administration to protect those who walk the toughest beats in the state. Whether you are in law enforcement, policy, or simply want to understand the realities of the criminal justice system, this is a conversation you won't want to miss.

Interview with retired CHP Captain Vicente Calderon - A legendary career and historic journey

A trailblazer in California law enforcement, retired California Highway Patrol Captain Vicente Calderón co-founded the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA) in the early 1970s alongside Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy John Parraz, helping build what became the largest Latino law enforcement association in the United States. As the organization's first president and founder of its Santa Clara County Chapter, Calderón turned an underrepresented demographic into an organized institutional force. During his tenure and through the association's early advocacy, Calderón led landmark policy shifts—including eliminating restrictive height requirements that previously barred women and minorities from joining the CHP, initiating bilingual compensation programs, and creating El Puente, the association's very first newsletter. Rising through the ranks to Captain, he combined frontline highway safety with systemic reform, creating pathways for generations of Hispanic officers across local, state, and federal agencies. For a deeper look into his historic journey and early work founding the organization, you can watch this discussion on SHEEPDOG ACIST: Ret. CHP Capt. Vicente Calderón. This video is relevant because it features an in-depth interview with retired Captain Vicente Calderón discussing his pioneering law enforcement career and the challenges Latino officers faced when creating the NLPOA in the 1970s.
