Climate Whiplash Explained: Why Earth Swings Between Floods and Droughts | Richard Allan

Climate change doesn’t simply make the world warmer, it makes water move more violently. Around 500,000 cubic kmx`` of water evaporate every year, creating a global cycle equivalent to an average of one meter of rainfall. In Part 1, we explored how Earth’s climate system works and how energy from the Sun shapes our planet’s temperature. In Part 2, Professor Richard Allan from the University of Reading explains how Earth’s energy budget powers the water cycle, why a warmer atmosphere produces both heavier rainfall and faster-forming droughts, and how scientists separate robust climate signals from regional uncertainty. We cover:👉🏻 The energy-water connection: How atmospheric heating and cooling drive evaporation, condensation, and rainfall👉🏻 The flood-drought paradox: Why wet extremes become wetter while droughts form and intensify more quickly👉🏻 Sea-level rise: Thermal expansion, melting ice sheets, and compound coastal-flood risks👉🏻 Climate whiplash: Increasingly rapid swings between prolonged wet and dry conditions👉🏻 Reasons for optimism: Electrification, cleaner air, systemic decarbonization, and why Prof. Allan scores his optimism 6/10No hype—just the physics connecting heat, moisture, and the increasingly volatile weather we experience.⏱️ TIME STAMPS[00:01:00] The global water cycle: 500,000 km³ of evaporation and one metre of annual rain[00:06:31] How Earth’s energy budget powers evaporation, condensation, and storms[00:09:36] Why floods and droughts both intensify as the atmosphere warms[00:21:06] Climate models[00:24:56] Sea-level rise, coastal flooding, and compound climate risks[00:27:21] Climate whiplash: faster swings between wet and dry extremes[00:32:31] Future risks, reasons for optimism, and Allan’s 6/10 score🔔 SUBSCRIBE for candid weekly conversations with scientists, economists, and risk experts shaping how we understand climate change.💬 Have you experienced “climate whiplash”—swinging from drought to floods or one extreme season to another? Why Tiny Amounts of CO₂ Change Earth’s Energy Balance — Prof. Richard Allan Explains

Climate conversations often focus on 1.5°C or 2°C of warming. But beneath those temperature numbers lies a more fundamental problem: Earth is retaining slightly more energy than it releases into space. That imbalance is only around one watt per square meter—yet it is warming the oceans, melting ice, and altering the water cycle that sustains life.Professor Richard Allan from the University of Reading, an expert on Earth’s energy and water cycles and an IPCC assessment lead author, explains how scientists know the planet is accumulating heat. We cover:👉🏻 Earth’s energy budget: Why 340 W/m² of solar energy arrives on average—and how much is reflected back to space👉🏻 Measuring the imbalance: Satellites, Argo ocean floats, GRACE gravity missions, and melting ice👉🏻 Why the ocean matters: Around 90% of trapped heat is entering the ocean, but much of it is building up near the surface👉🏻 Tiny CO₂, major effect: Molecular absorption bands, saturation, and why 0.04% can still transform the climate👉🏻 Clouds and feedbacks: Why low clouds cool the planet, high clouds warm it, and feedbacks amplify initial warming👉🏻 Stopping emissions: Would temperatures continue rising if we stopped emitting CO₂ tomorrow?⏱️ TIMESTAMPS[00:00:00] Introduction: Why temperature is only part of the climate story[00:01:01] Richard Allan’s path from snowy UK winters to climate science[00:03:30] Quick-fire questions: warming, human causation, 2100, and tipping points[00:06:00] Earth’s energy budget: sunlight, infrared heat, and satellite measurements[00:12:50] Measuring the imbalance: satellites and ocean warming[00:19:45] Why trace amounts of CO₂ have an outsized warming effect[00:27:51] Ocean heat storage, cloud effects, and climate feedbacks[00:36:44] Zero emissions, aerosols, and the future of climate research🔔 SUBSCRIBE for candid weekly conversations with scientists, economists, and risk experts shaping how we understand climate change.#ClimateChange #EnergyImbalance #ClimateScience #GlobalWarming #OceanWarming #RichardAllan #GreenhouseEffect #Clouds #Aerosols #ClimateFeedback #CarbonDioxide #EarthScience #IPCC #UniversityOfReading #LetsClimunicate__________________________________________________________________🎙️ New to Let’s Climunicate? The Ecosystem We Lose First: Coral Reefs, 500 Million People, and the 1.5°C Limit | Simon Donner

Climate change can feel abstract, fractions of degrees, emissions pathways, 2050 targets. But in the oceans, the changes are already violently visible. Professor Simon Donner (University of British Columbia) has spent his career at the intersection of climate science, coral reefs, adaptation policy, and communication. In this episode, he explains why coral reefs are the most sensitive climate indicator we have, and why their collapse tells us more about our future than any global temperature graph. We cover: 👉🏻 Coral bleaching mechanics: Why just 1–2°C above normal turns reefs white and why recovery time is running out 👉🏻 The 1.5°C threshold: Why IPCC scientists say we're already at risk of losing the world's coral reefs 👉🏻 What we lose: Food security for 500 million people, shoreline protection, undiscovered medicines, and tourism economies 👉🏻 Can we save them? "Climate Adaptation Has Limits"— Joanna Nalau on What We Can Do

Climate adaptation was long treated as the "forgotten sibling" of climate action, but with basements flooding four times a year and entire communities asking when to stop rebuilding, it has become the conversation we can no longer afford to postpone. We sit down with Associate Professor Joanna Nalau, a climate adaptation scientist at Griffith University and one of the early pioneers who helped build this field from scratch. From her first research project in Zanzibar with the Finnish foreign ministry to watching heatwaves arrive on Australia's Gold Coast years ahead of schedule, Joanna shares why adaptation is not just about bouncing back, it's about anticipating a future we can no longer avoid. We explore the gap between adaptation theory and practice, why Indigenous knowledge systems hold lessons modern models miss, and how "futures thinking" and imagination are becoming serious decision-making tools for cities. Climate Risk and YOUR Insurance, WHAT CHANGED?

Climate change is often framed as a future problem. But in May 2023, Emilia-Romagna learned it was already here, two catastrophic floods in two weeks, then another just 16 months later. When "rare" events return before communities recover, can we still call them exceptions? In this episode, Dr. Alberto Troccoli bridges the gap between what climate science knows and what our institutions actually do with it. Not in the abstract, through real decisions: a mortgage, an insurance premium, a flood map, a city plan. We unpack why uncertainty is not a reason to wait, why your flood map may already be outdated, and why the most useful climate question isn't "will it happen?" but "how have the odds changed?" Three translation rules for reading climate risk without paralysis or denial: 👉🏻 Rule 1: Warming changes the odds, not just the average 👉🏻 Rule 2: The trend creates risk even when the weather is noisy 👉🏻 Rule 3: Risk scales from individual to systemic, and back again From sea wall design to insurance collapse, from event attribution to why a 1.5°C anomaly is more like a persistent fever than a minor fluctuation, this is climate risk made practical. ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Italy Floods Wake-Up Call 01:38 Podcast Setup and Aim 02:37 Uncertainty and Insurance Logic 03:35 When Flood Maps Mislead 05:34 From Blame to Probability 06:37 Three Rules for Translation 06:45 Rule One Odds Shift 07:44 Rule Two Trend vs Noise 09:20 Rule Three Systemic Risk 11:02 Sea Wall Decisions Under Uncertainty 13:10 Models as Scenario Tools 14:05 Closing Takeaways and Next Steps This is Episode 6 of the solo series. 🎙️ Host: Alberto Troccoli | Let's Communicate 🌍 Stay connected with Let's Climunicate! 💬 Got a story about climate risk hitting your mortgage, insurance, or local planning? Is Carbon Capture the Answer to Climate Change? || The Physicist's Case

Part 2: The Fix — Professor Myles Allen In Part 1 we established the physics: every ton of CO₂ warms the planet permanently, net zero is the only way to stop it, and carbon capture is not optional, it's essential. But the science is only half the battle. In this second part, Myles Allen pushes us into the harder territory: why we're stuck at 0.1% carbon capture, why nature-based solutions can't save us, and why the environmental movement's opposition to carbon capture is, in his words, "weird." We go deep into the CO₂ saturation myth that refuses to die, the real drivers behind the apparent acceleration in warming (spoiler: it's not unexplained), and why cleaning up aerosols is revealing warming that was already there. Allen also takes on the policy front: why the "transition away from fossil fuels" narrative is backfiring in real time, just look at Colombia. From the sewage analogy that reframes the entire problem, to why long-term targets like net zero 2050 distract from the investments we need now, to the human tipping point that worries him more than ice sheets, this is Allen unfiltered. The physics is simple. The politics is not. THE PHYSICIST BEHIND NET ZERO: Can we UNDO climate Change ? || Prof. Myles Allen

🌍 Let's Climunicate | Episode Part 1: Mr. Net Zero — Professor Myles Allen Some people call him "Mr. Net Zero." and the nickname stuck for a reason. Myles Allen is the Oxford physicist whose 2009 research fundamentally changed how the world thinks about climate change, not as an annual emissions problem, but as a cumulative carbon budget that the atmosphere keeps like a running bank account. In this episode, we go deep into the science that shaped the Paris Agreement. Why every ton of CO₂ pushes global temperatures up by half a trillionth of a degree permanently. Why the bathtub analogy still holds, but with a crucial twist most people miss. And why "net zero" isn't just a slogan: it's the physics of stopping warming dead in its tracks. But Allen doesn't stop at the science. He takes on the hard questions: Why is carbon capture still at 0.1% of what's needed? And why is it "naive" to think falling solar prices alone will kill oil and gas, when the industry has enormous room to cut prices and fight back? ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS [00:01:43] Introduction: Mr. Net Zero enters the chat [00:03:34] The physics made simple: why cumulative emissions matter more than annual ones [00:05:24] The bathtub analogy — with a twist most people miss [00:08:33] Carbon dioxide's permanent impact: why only turning it back into rock undoes the damage [00:14:32] Quick-fire questions: temperature rise, human causation, future scenarios, and the tipping point we should worry about [00:18:43] What net zero actually means — and why warming stops there, not just slows down [00:22:07] Has net zero been stress-tested? The gap between scenarios and reality [00:26:56] Carbon capture at scale: why we're at 0.1% and need to get to 100% [00:30:59] Why economics alone won't save us: the oil and gas industry's hidden leverage [00:34:50] The environmental movement's "weird" opposition to carbon capture — and why Allen says it's a test of seriousness 🔔 SUBSCRIBE for new episodes every week, candid conversations with scientists, economists, and risk experts shaping how we understand climate change. 💬 Got a question about net zero, carbon capture, or the carbon budget?
