    What does your future hold? That’s a question we all wish we had the answer to. We want to ensure that our future holds good things. Whether it’s the big promotion, the big prize, or the big opportunity. We want our kids and families to thrive, our church to be spirit-filled and led, our relationships to grow, and our dreams to become reality. So we make plans, set goals and expectations, and work hard. Even then, life still doesn't always go as we hoped. When it doesn’t, we often struggle to trust that God’s will and ways are better than our own. Even though we know he is over all, and we have seen him work in countless miraculous ways before, and we know that what lies ahead is best in his hands. We can make plans for tomorrow, but we don’t even know IF there will be a tomorrow, let alone WHAT tomorrow might bring. This series, By Faith, has helped us remember that whatever God has in store for us, it is far better than anything we could ever come up with on our own, and we will continue to see this together on Sunday as we look at the life of Isaac. We have little control over what comes next, but we can trust the only God who has it all, if for no other reason than this: he is God; sovereign, supreme, and faithful.     By Faith Sarah Received Power To Conceive

    Do you ever find yourself getting impatient with God? Is there something that you are waiting on him for right now? If you were a fly on the wall in my home or office, you may often hear me, in frustration, singing the chorus to that Tom Petty song, “The waiting is the hardest part!” We all understand that waiting isn’t easy! This week, as we once again turn to Hebrews 11, we will look at Sarah (and Abraham’s) faith. While they boldly trusted God’s call to leave their home, they then spent years waiting for the fulfillment of his promise that they would become “a great nation”! During this time, we see at different points that their faith wavered. In his book, Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis wrote, “…I am sure that God keeps no one waiting unless He sees that it is good for him to wait.” While waiting can be hard and we don’t always understand it, we can trust that God is always at work, that he will be glorified, and that it is for our good! Whatever it is that you are waiting on God for today, you can trust that he is faithful to us and works with us even when our faith wavers!     By Faith Abraham Obeyed God When He Was Tested

    As I prepared to write this message, I wrote down the following thought: Do you believe that God is the God of the impossible and miraculous? If your answer is yes, it might be because you’ve seen him at work through improbable, bizarre, and yet incredible situations in your life and in the lives of those around you. Despite this, it’s often still hard for us to trust him, remembering and believing his promises, isn’t it? We don't always admit it out loud, but, for example, you might have seen the most unlikely people come to Christ, yet struggle to believe he will save the loved ones you’ve been praying for over the years. Or maybe you’ve seen God provide when things were tight financially, and even remembering those times, you still can’t make the math math, so you struggle to trust that he will provide when you face financial strain. Maybe you remember how God opened doors of opportunity that you never expected, but now you struggle to believe that he will open the right doors at the right time. As we continue our series through Hebrews 11, we’ll be reminded that God made some awesome promises to Abraham, and all God called Abraham to do was trust him and follow him, one step at a time. When we trust and follow, we can expect him to demonstrate his perfect faithfulness to us.     By Faith Noah Constructed an Ark in Reverent Fear of God

    What do you do when you see a sign that says, “Beware of dog”? The logical thing to do is assume the sign is accurate and that it’s there for your safety; therefore, you should beware of said dog. I don’t know about you, but I don’t need to see the dog or experience the danger it’s warning me about before deciding whether to heed the sign. I’d rather err on the side of caution, trust what the sign says, and respond accordingly. That’s where we find Noah. God warned him about events to come, though they were still unseen. God told Noah that he would send a flood to bring judgment upon the world because of its sin and rebellion against God. This flood would destroy everyone and everything. But Noah had never seen anything like what God was warning him about. He couldn’t physically see the events God had described since they hadn’t happened yet. But he didn’t need to see it to believe God. Noah chose to trust what God had said and respond accordingly by faith. As we look at Noah in Hebrews 11 this week, the question for us is: Will we trust God even when we can’t see what he is doing?     By Faith Enoch Walked With God Pleasing Him

    There can be something profoundly personal about walking with someone. Think about it, especially in the context of our Western culture. If I told you I regularly go for walks with my wife and family, none of you would think twice about it. If anything, you might think that’s good, healthy, and sweet. But if I told you that, once in a while, Derek, our worship director, and I go for casual strolls together, you might think that’s a little odd. Some might argue it shouldn’t be, but for most of us, that’s our perception. In some cultures, it’s customary for people to link arms or hold hands while walking, even when a man walks with another man. It isn’t romantic in any way; it simply communicates closeness and companionship between the two people. This is interesting because Scripture uses the picture of walking to describe the kind of relationship we have with God. So, when it says that “Enoch walked with God” we automatically understand this isn’t referring to the places they went together, but to the close and intimate relationship they had. Enoch didn’t just know about God; he knew him deeply and personally. His life was changed because of this, and ours can be too. So, as we continue our series in Hebrews 11, we’ll consider our own walk with God and ask ourselves: Do we pursue him in everything? Do we live in a way that pleases him? Do we point others back to him?     By Faith Abel Offered To God a More Acceptable Sacrifice

    Hebrews 11 is often known as the “Hall of Faith.” Throughout this chapter, we’re introduced to men and women whose stories are found throughout the Old Testament and who, in different ways, demonstrated what it means to trust God. Over and over again, these are the two words that describe how they sought to live: “by faith.” But the mistake we often make is assuming that since these people are found in this passage, then they must be considered as some kind of “legends of the faith.” Yet as you start reading about every one of them in detail, you quickly realize that this was not the case. This passage contains some of the worst kinds of people doing some of the worst kinds of things. They were drunks, liars, thieves, murderers, adulterers, and more. Though we often label them as heroes, in many cases, they were more like zeroes. So, why do we find them here? Why even point to them and their lives through Hebrews 11? What could we possibly learn about living by faith from them? The truth is that we are all very much like them. We too are just a bunch of broken people needing to trust in Christ alone for salvation and life. Because without faith, we cannot be saved, we cannot be transformed, and we cannot please God (Hebrews 11:6). All of these require faith in God. Their stories point beyond themselves to the great, faithful, and trustworthy God in whom they placed their faith. As we examine the lives of these men and women and what Scripture reveals about faith and, more specifically, their faith, we will be reminded of a simple, yet powerful and necessary truth: we can only live by faith.     The Mouth of the Righteous Is a Fountain of Life

    Words matter. Whether it’s what we say or what we don’t say, it all matters a lot. This week, we’ll see how Proverbs 10:11 warns us about the dangers of the tongue, while also pointing to the positive impact our words can have. Our mouths can either spring forth good like a fountain of life, or they can pour out words that wound deeply. We’ve all said things that were less than reflective of Jesus. I’m sure each of us would like to take back at least one thing we’ve said in the past, since we’ve all gossiped, lied, cursed, insulted others, or made rude and offensive comments. In those moments, we allowed resentment, irritation, arrogance, or flat-out carelessness to rule our tongues…none of which honour Christ. And yet, the crazy, wonderful thing is that as we pursue Christ in our lives, we will see him working to redeem every part of us, including our mouths, so that we might use them to speak life. So, as you prepare to hear God’s Word challenge you, I encourage you to take some time and consider the following: What do my words reveal about my daily walk with Jesus and the transformation he desires to bring about in me?     Reprove A Wise Man and He Will Love You

    As you study the New Testament, you’ll notice that those who followed Jesus were often described as belonging to “the Way.” Even Saul, who we know as Paul, used this term prior to his own conversion to Christ, describing the kind of people he was looking to threaten, imprison, and kill. And that makes sense since Jesus himself said, “I am the way”, in John 14. But what does this have to do with Proverbs 9? Well, this chapter is split up into two parts, and each presents opposing ways to live: the Way of Wisdom or the Way of Folly. Those are the only two options available to every one of us, and each leads to a different destination. People want to believe that all roads are equal and lead to the same thing, but the Bible says otherwise. Only one way is right and true. Christ is the way, since, as believers, we belong to him, it should be very easy for us to know which way to choose; yet this is a choice we struggle with in every moment. In life, we are continually tempted to trust our own wisdom, pursue our own desires, and go our own way. Which is why we need to be reminded of what Christ and his way leads to, and that choosing the Way of Wisdom means choosing Christ. This is what we will consider as we continue our series in the book of Proverbs.
