Marketing Your Truth | Positioning and Marketing for Experts

Eli Natoli

Why do clients choose one expert over another, when both are qualified, experienced, and fully capable of doing the work? Marketing Your Truth is a podcast for consultants, coaches, advisors, attorneys, and expert-led firms whose clients are choosing the person behind the solution. Hosted by positioning strategist Eli Natoli, each episode looks at what really happens inside a buying decision: how trust forms, why being visible isn't the same as being chosen, and how to make what's genuinely different about your expertise visible to the people looking for it. We explore differentiation and positioning, buyer-alignment messaging, the client journey, authority, and human-centered marketing, including how to use AI without sounding like everyone else. This isn't a show about posting more or chasing the next tactic. It's about helping the right clients recognize that you're the one.

What Makes a Client Think, “You’re the One”?

"Show people more of the person behind the business" is one of the most common pieces of personal branding advice. But knowing more about your life doesn't tell a client whether you're the one they want to work with. In this episode, I look at the second layer of every buying decision: once a client believes you're capable, they're deciding whether they trust the way you think and can see themselves working with you.  Through the story of an attorney who flies planes and the realtor we hired in 2021's housing market, I share why fit isn't universal, why the most powerful parts of your personal brand are often already built into how you do the work, and how Buyer-Alignment Messaging helps the right clients recognize you're the person they want behind the solution. The Client Journey Behind My 7-Figure Business

Most marketing plans start with a checklist: post more, grow the list, launch the podcast, chase more leads. I build mine around one person. In this episode, I walk through the client journey behind my seven-figure business, and how I build it backward: starting from the moment an ideal client says "I want to work with you," all the way back to the first time they discover me. I share a real example from a recent engagement with a financial advisory firm, and how I'm using what I learned from that one client to design a path for more companies like them. Because just like a party, you don't send the invitations before the venue is ready. In this episode: Why marketing feels like a never-ending checklist, even with a teamHow to build your client journey around one real client instead of a made-up personaWhy working backward from "I want to hire you" saves you from building marketing you don't needHow every part of your marketing (content, lead magnet, emails, consultations) has a different jobHow to diagnose where your marketing is breaking downThe one question that tells you which marketing activities you can stop doingIf you're doing a lot of marketing without seeing proportional growth in clients and revenue, this episode will help you design a more intentional path from "I've never heard of you" to "You're exactly who I've been looking for." It's Not a Strategy Problem: The 5 Visibility Wounds Keeping Entrepreneurs Stuck with Nene Dabo

Most visibility advice starts and stops at tactics: post here, speak there, start a podcast. But what happens when you're doing everything right and still can't show up consistently? In this episode, Eli sits down with Nene Dabo, founder of ReViveHER, to go underneath strategy and into what Nene calls visibility wounds — five core patterns that quietly sabotage entrepreneurs before any tactic gets a chance to work: value, safety, effort, identity, and belonging. Nene breaks down how each one actually shows up in day-to-day business behavior — over-explaining and over-giving, playing it safe instead of speaking your truth, grinding instead of flowing, chasing the next new idea instead of committing, mimicking someone else's brand instead of owning your own — and gets vulnerable about her own three-month journey healing her visibility wounds, tracing a fear of being seen all the way back to childhood beliefs about success and responsibility. She also makes the case for why "just push through it" is toxic advice: unaddressed wounds don't disappear, they recycle into a new pattern, sometimes even physical ones. If you've ever wondered why the same strategy works for one person and stalls for another, this is the missing layer. In this episode: The 5 visibility wounds Nene sees most often in entrepreneurs, and their archetypesWhy "just push through it" backfires, and what to do insteadHow to trace a wound back to its root fear or limiting beliefNene's own healing journey, from fear of being seen to fear of successWhy unhealed wounds show up as pattern, not just discomfort, and where else they hide in your businessConnect with Nene below:  Website: www.nenedabo.com LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/nenedabo Substack (ReViveHER publication): https://reviveher.substack.com Grab the FREE GUIDE: Discover the unconscious pattern quietly sabotaging your visibility, content, and business growth Have recommendations or feedback? Why the Most Qualified Expert Doesn’t Always Get Hired

If you've ever lost a client to someone with less experience, fewer credentials, or seemingly weaker expertise, this episode explores why. For years, we've been taught that great marketing is about proving we're the best choice: experience, testimonials, certifications, results. More proof, more clients. But once a buyer believes two experts are equally capable, they start asking a different set of questions, often without realizing it. Questions about trust, judgment, values, and whether you feel like the right person to help them. You'll discover: Why expertise is the price of admission, not the deciding factorThe hidden psychology behind why clients choose one expert over anotherHow trust is built long before someone books a consultationWhy your content reveals how you think, not just what you knowWhy reducing years of judgment to credentials and bullet points makes experts blend inWhether you're a coach, consultant, attorney, financial advisor, or agency owner, people don't just choose the most qualified expert. They choose the person they trust with the journey. How to Find What Makes You Different in a Crowded Market

Most experts are told to find a niche, study the market, and position themselves around what people want. It's also one of the fastest ways to sound like everyone else. The more closely you follow the conversations already happening in your market, the more likely you are to reinforce the same assumptions, repeat the same promises, and compete with people who look remarkably similar to you. In this episode, I explain why meaningful differentiation doesn't come from studying the market. It comes from identifying where your experience, observations, and conclusions diverge from what the market already believes. You'll learn why market research can reveal what people want but can't reveal what makes you different, how to identify the hidden gaps in your industry's conversation, and why the strongest positioning often begins where conventional wisdom ends. If you've ever struggled to explain why someone should choose you instead of everyone else offering a similar solution, this episode will help you uncover the perspectives that make you impossible to compare. What Most Experts Get Wrong About Understanding Their Audience

If you've struggled to choose a niche, or you're afraid of building everything around the wrong audience, the problem may be where you started. Most of us were taught to begin with the market: define your niche, research pain points, learn the exact words your audience uses. It sounds responsible. But it trains you to shape your message around what already exists, which is exactly how experts end up sounding interchangeable. In this episode, I share a different starting point: understanding how you see the problem before you try to define who you serve. When you do, choosing an audience stops being about narrowing and starts being about recognition. You begin to see where your work naturally lands, and who immediately recognizes themselves in the way you describe their situation. This is Part 2 of my 3-part Building Your Authority series. If you haven't heard Part 1, start there. What Buyers Are Actually Looking For Before They Hire You

Why does marketing feel harder than it used to, even when your expertise is deeper and your marketing is more polished? Because buyers have changed what they evaluate first. Before they compare your solution to anyone else's, they're evaluating you: Do I trust this person? Do I believe their approach works? Do they actually understand my situation? If those answers aren't there, the solution almost doesn't matter. In this episode, I explain why the model so many of us built our businesses on (turn your expertise into an offer, then let marketing do the rest) stopped working, why we've entered what I call the Age of Authority, and the first piece of the foundation you need now: your Why-You Factor. This is Part 1 of my 3-part Building Your Authority series. Human Resonance: The Energy Behind Trust and Connection with Jayne Warrilow

In this episode, I’m joined by Jayne Warrilow, founder of Sacred Changemakers, for a conversation about resonance, alignment, leadership, and the invisible signals people pick up long before we ever speak. We explore why some people naturally create trust and connection while others struggle to translate their depth online, how resonance shapes the way people experience your work, and why so many entrepreneurs unintentionally speak to people who already think like they do instead of the people who truly need their help. Jayne also shares how her work evolved from leadership development and executive coaching into a deeper exploration of human resonance, consciousness, energy, and regenerative leadership. This conversation goes far beyond traditional marketing advice. It explores the deeper layers beneath visibility, trust, communication, and the way we show up in business and in life. In this episode, we explore: • why people often feel your presence before they process your words  • the difference between resonance and performance  • why many entrepreneurs feel disconnected online  • how alignment shapes trust and connection  • the “resonance gap” that affects marketing and relationships  • why deeper self-awareness changes the way we lead and communicate Connect with Jayne Warrilow: Sacred Changemakers Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sacred-changemakers/id1500347475 Becoming: Poems From The Threshold Of Change: https://amzn.to/3HkMJ3v Resonance Codes Quiz: https://quiz.sacredchangemakers.com Have recommendations or feedback?
