When the Earth Trembles: Berlioz's Requiem

Tickets and details for the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park’s upcoming presentation of Berlioz Requiem can be found HERE. How does a master conductor and two premier percussionists adapt one of the most monumental works in classical music for the modern stage without losing its profound impact?  Hector Berlioz’s Grande Messe des morts, Op. 5 (Requiem) is an extraordinary achievement in acoustic design. It is famously scored for large forces, including four offstage brass choirs, sixteen tympani, and a remarkable variety of percussion instruments. In this episode, Dr. John Sinclair is joined by UCF’s Jeffery Moore and Kirk Gay to explore the artistic and logistical choices involved in bringing this massive work to life. Together, they discuss the subtle musical decisions and acoustic strategies used to maintain the work's visceral and iconic resonance for today’s discerning listeners. Press play to listen now and explore the creative process behind classical music's most significant masterpiece before joining us in Steinmetz Hall. Dean Jeffrey Moore is also a professor of music (percussion) and a member of the UCF faculty since 1994, Moore served as the founding director of the School of Performing Arts and chair of the Music Department. He has been instrumental in achieving national accreditation for both the theatre and music departments. As an educator, he has taught applied percussion, directed the UCF Percussion Ensemble and marimba band, and mentored generations of musicians. Kirk Gay is currently the Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies and an Instructor of Music at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL.  He teaches student lessons for the percussion studio and directs “Black Steel” the UCF steel drum ensemble. As a composer and arranger he has works published by Tapspace Publications, Alfred Publications and Pan Press Publications. Mr. Gay’s timpani etude book “Pedal to the Kettle”, released by Tapspace Publications, is used in many states for All-State auditions as well on the state solo lists.
