Adapted from Stephen King’s 1972 short story of the same name, The Mangler follows small-town cop John Hunton as he investigates a series of gruesome incidents centered around a, seemingly demonic, industrial speed iron and folding machine. Listen along as Brandon humorously recaps the film’s plot and analyzes its themes, including the illusion of control and the inheritance of family burdens and trauma. Daddy issues much? Is The Mangler  Worth Watching? | The Mangler is a Stephen King Night Shift adaptation that leans into occult horror, demonic possession, and dark themes of human sacrifice, generational trauma, and corrupt small-town power structures — all revolving around a killer industrial laundry machine. Despite being a collaboration between three horror legends — Stephen King, Tobe Hooper, and Robert Englund — the film’s silliness leads to misfires more times than not, earning only a one-star rating from Brandon (but a 2.7 average on Letterboxd). However, the use of gory practical effects should serve as a high point for horror fans. In this episode of Terrorific, host Brandon O. highly advises you to stay indoors as he analyzes one the best Stephen King movies with its infamous ending, 2007’s The Mist. Adapted from King’s 1980 novella of the same name, The Mist is a science fiction and psychological horror film that follows David Drayton, a husband and father living in Maine who gets trapped inside a local grocery store with his young son and fellow survivors after a mysterious, monster-filled mist rolls into town following a powerful storm. Listen along as Brandon recaps the film’s plot and dissects its themes, as what begins as a survival horror story quickly evolves into something far more terrifying — a tale about what fear does to ordinary people. From giant tentacled creatures and acid-webbing spiders to alien pterodactyls tearing people apart, The Mist is loaded with plenty of gruesome moments to satisfy any horror fan that Brandon hilariously breaks down through his usual dark humor. The Lovecraftian monstrosities are bad, but the biggest danger? A self-proclaimed prophet and her proselytizing. Godspeed! Is The Mist Worth Watching? | Brandon rates it a 3.5 out of 5 on Letterboxd (in line with its 3.4 average), with the lackluster and aged CGI being the film's biggest weakness. But despite its visual shortcomings at times, it remains a masterclass in tension, character, and thematic depth that horror and Stephen King fans alike shouldn't sleep on. A new adaptation is also in the works at Warner Bros., with Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep) at the helm — and Flanagan has confirmed it will go in a completely different direction from the 2007 version.
