That You May Believe - The God Who Kneels

What would you do with 24 hours left to live and all authority in the universe at your fingertips? That question sits at the heart of one of the most stunning moments in all of Scripture. In John 13, we find Jesus in the upper room with his closest followers, hours before the cross, fully aware of his divine position and the betrayal coming his way. And what does he do? He wraps a towel around his waist, kneels on a dirty floor, and washes his disciples' feet. This was not a symbolic gesture stripped of its weight. In that culture, foot washing was the task reserved for the lowest servant in the household. No one of standing would stoop to it. Yet here is the one before whom angels cry holy, the one who spoke galaxies into existence, cradling the dirty feet of fishermen and a betrayer. The gap between his position and his posture is almost impossible to comprehend. And that gap is precisely the point. We are invited this week to sit with that image and ask ourselves honestly where pride has kept us from serving, and who in our lives we have been unwilling to kneel before.

That You May Believe - Why Believe In Jesus

John 12:44–50 records Jesus’ final public appeal before the Gospel of John shifts toward His private conversations with the disciples and ultimately His death and resurrection. Jesus reminds His listeners of who He is, why He came, and what is at stake in responding to Him. Jesus reveals the Father and makes the invisible God known. He came into the world as light, not simply to expose our darkness but to lead us out of it. He came to save, yet rejecting Him and His Word carries real consequences. His words carry the authority of the Father and point us toward eternal life. For followers of Jesus, the message also carries a challenge: we are already called the light of the world. We are not meant to hide that light or hold onto areas of darkness while claiming to follow Jesus. We are called to surrender, obey His Word, live differently, and point others toward the One who saved us.

That You May Believe - Our Response To Jesus

What does it look like to truly give Jesus everything? In John chapter 12, we encounter three people whose responses to Jesus challenge us to examine our own. Mary's act of pouring out an entire year's worth of costly perfume at Jesus' feet was not asked of her, not commanded, and certainly not applauded by everyone in the room. It was a purely sacrificial act of worship that cost her something real. Lazarus, fresh from the grave, simply told people what Jesus had done in his life. He did not have a theology degree. He had a testimony. And the crowd welcomed Jesus as king with loud, public celebration. Together, these three portraits ask us a pointed question: are we worshiping, witnessing, and welcoming Jesus with our whole lives, or only when it is convenient and comfortable? The spiritual lesson here is that genuine faith shows up in action, and often those actions will draw criticism from the people around us. Mary faced Judas. Lazarus faced a death threat. The crowd's enthusiasm would later be tested by the events of the cross. Yet each of them, in their own way, points us toward a faith that does not shrink back. What are we willing to sacrifice, say, and surrender to make clear that Jesus is worth everything to us?

That You May Believe - Plotting Against Jesus

What happens when the greatest miracle imaginable is not enough to change a hardened heart? In John 11, we are brought into one of the most dramatic and revealing moments in all of Scripture. Jesus has just raised Lazarus from the dead after four days in the tomb, a sign so undeniable that it should have settled every question about who Jesus is. And yet, the response is divided. Some believe. Others run straight to the authorities to report him. This passage forces us to confront a truth that cuts deep: unbelief is not rooted in a lack of evidence. We see it plainly in the reaction of the Sanhedrin, the highest governing council in Israel, men who openly acknowledge that Jesus is performing many signs, and yet their only concern is protecting their power and their way of life. The miracle is not the obstacle. Their hearts are. This is a message that speaks directly to where we live. Whether we have never surrendered to Christ or whether we are believers holding certain areas of our lives back from his reign, the same question confronts us all. What is our place and our nation? What are we refusing to place under the rule of a sovereign God? The spiritual invitation here is urgent and deeply personal.

That You May Believe - The Savior Who Weeps

What does Jesus actually do when grief closes in and sorrow feels unbearable? In John chapter 11, we are brought face to face with a Jesus who is not distant or detached from our pain. Through the story of Lazarus, his sisters Mary and Martha, and a community drowning in mourning, we discover four profound truths about the character of Christ: he sees our sorrow, he feels it deeply, he moves toward it rather than away from it, and ultimately he conquers it. The shortest verse in the Bible, telling us that Jesus wept, carries enormous weight here. It reveals a Savior who is fully God and fully human, one who entered into grief with those he loved rather than simply observing it from a safe distance. This passage invites us to reconsider how we interpret our own painful seasons and whether we are reading God's love through the lens of our circumstances, or reading our circumstances through the lens of his love.

That You May Believe - When The Shepherd Speaks

This week’s sermon continued in John 10, where Jesus is confronted by religious leaders who ask Him to plainly say whether He is the Christ. Jesus responds by pointing to His words and works, explaining that His sheep hear His voice, follow Him, receive eternal life, and are secure in His hand. The sermon also addressed some of the theological tension in this passage—especially around belief, salvation, election, free will, and eternal security. Rather than becoming divisive over theological systems, we were reminded to hold firmly to the gospel: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again according to the Scriptures.

That You May Believe - The Door

What does it truly mean to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd? In John 10, we are drawn into a rich and layered conversation that Jesus has with the religious leaders of his day, and the contrast could not be more striking. On one side, we see leaders who have climbed into positions of authority through self-interest, burdening the people they were meant to serve. On the other, we encounter a shepherd who knows each sheep by name, calls them out of bondage, and leads them toward life. The imagery of the sheepfold is not just a pastoral picture from the ancient world. It is a mirror held up to our own lives. We live in a world saturated with voices, each one promising something, each one competing for our trust and our devotion. The question this passage presses upon us is whether we have become so familiar with the voice of Christ, through his word, through prayer, through the counsel of his people, that we can distinguish it clearly from everything else. The sheep in the sheepfold did not follow just any voice. They followed the one they knew. That kind of intimacy with the shepherd is not accidental. It is cultivated. And as we reflect on that, we are invited to ask ourselves honestly whether we are truly tuned in to his voice or whether the noise of life has drowned it out.

That You May Believe - From Blind To Believing

What does it mean to truly see? In John chapter 9, we encounter a man born blind whose life becomes a stage for one of the most profound miracles in all of Scripture. But this passage is about far more than physical healing. It is about the kind of spiritual sight that changes everything. As we walk through all 41 verses, we discover three powerful truths: Jesus sees people that others overlook, Jesus changes people in ways they cannot change themselves, and Jesus reveals himself so that we might believe and worship. The blind man's neighbors argued about whether he was even the same person. The religious leaders interrogated him and his parents, more concerned with theological technicalities than with the miracle standing right in front of them. Yet this man, who had never seen a single day of his life, ends up with a clarity that the sighted crowd never finds. His testimony is disarmingly simple: one thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see. We are reminded that we do not need to have all the answers to share what Jesus has done for us. Our own story of transformation is one of the most powerful tools we carry. The question this passage leaves with us is not just whether we can see, but whether we are willing to.
