Is it really true that a country with a youthful population is prone to conflict over peace? What can we learn from young people who have experienced both, and how can we empower them to take even bigger strides towards a more peaceful future? In this podcast, Dr Michaelina Jakala from the Centre for Peace and Security at Coventry University explores case studies from a range of different countries that will challenge the way you think about the role young people play in peace and conflict. In a series of conversations with young people, practitioners and academics, Dr Jakala asks what we can learn from the experiences of child soldiers in Bosnia, from Generation 2000 – the Kurdish Millennials who’ve come of age in the aftermath of the US invasion of Iraq, and from the actions of young Colombians following the signing of the 2016 Peace Agreement.  The views and opinions expressed in this podcast series are those of the individuals and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the Centre for Peace and Security. We hear first hand accounts from Mira Mehmedović and Midhat Kapo, both of whom fought for the Army of the Republic of Bsonia and Herzegovina in the Bosnian war from the age of 17. They are joined in the discussion by Siniša Sajević, Director of Wings of Hope, a Sarajevo-based Foundation that works to help those affected by the trauma of war.
