    The Bell in the Deep — The Drowned Villages That Still Ring

    Send us Fan Mail Picture a valley in North Wales. A chapel, a school, a post office, twelve farms, a graveyard with generations of the community's dead. A living, Welsh-speaking place. And far away, in a city, powerful men look at a map, draw a line, and decide it would make an excellent place to store water. Tonight, Mark and Grim go down — beneath the reservoirs of Britain, to the villages deliberately drowned to slake the thirst of distant cities, and to the ghost that haunts every one of them: the church bell said to still ring, far below the water. The documented heart of it is Capel Celyn, flooded in 1965 to supply Liverpool — against a decade of protest, against the near-unanimous vote of Wales's own MPs, and drowned anyway, in the full light of day. The graves were moved. The chapel demolished. And in dry summers, the ruins still rise from the falling lake like something surfacing to breathe. We travel to Mardale Green beneath Haweswater, and Derwent beneath Ladybower — whose church spire stood out of the water until they blew it up — and everywhere, the same story: a bell, tolling up from the deep, for a congregation that drowned. It isn't really a ghost story. It's a story about power — about who gets sacrificed for whom, and how the valley chosen for drowning is always the one with the least power to say no.
