Living with Chronic Illness? Be Kinder to Yourself | Rachel Hayden

What if the hardest part of chronic illness isn’t the symptoms… but how harshly we treat ourselves? In this heartfelt episode of The Michele Roys Show, I sit down with Rachel Hayden — founder of Spoonful of Strength and host of The Spoonful Show. Living with Type 1 Diabetes for over 25 years and later diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Rachel shares how she stopped fighting herself and started practicing real self-compassion. This conversation is filled with honesty, faith, and practical hope for anyone navigating chronic illness, invisible illness, autoimmune conditions, or chronic pain. In this episode we discuss: ✨ Living with Type 1 Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis ✨ Why self-compassion is harder than compassion for others ✨ The emotional weight of a chronic illness diagnosis ✨ Redefining strength when your body changes ✨ Letting go of perfectionism and asking for help ✨ Finding purpose, faith, and joy despite ongoing challenges One powerful reminder from Rachel: “Be as kind to yourself as you are to the people you love.” If you’re tired of feeling like your diagnosis defines you, this episode will remind you that you are so much more — and that gentle self-compassion can change everything. 💛 What is one small act of kindness you can show yourself this week? Feeling Weary? This Might Just Help

Sometimes we don't need another podcast telling us how to do more. Sometimes we just need to pause. As we begin a new month, I wanted to do something a little different. In this episode, I'm simply reading Psalm 23 and sharing why these words have carried me through some of the hardest seasons of my life—living with chronic pain, navigating invisible illness, and learning that sometimes God really does "make us lie down" so He can restore us. If you've been feeling tired, overwhelmed, anxious, or like life has been a little too heavy lately, I hope you'll take ten minutes, slow down with me, and simply listen. Maybe these words are exactly what your heart needs today. 💛 In this episode we reflect on: • What "He makes me lie down in green pastures" means to me now • Why slowing down isn't giving up • Trusting God when we can't see what's ahead • Finding peace in difficult seasons • How God restores our soul, one step at a time As I was recording this, I kept thinking about how easy it is to rush into a new month with another long to-do list. Maybe this month, instead of striving, we simply begin by resting in God's presence. I'd love to hear from you. ✨ What part of Psalm 23 speaks to you the most? Or simply leave a 💚 in the comments if this episode encouraged you. If you know someone who's carrying a heavy load right now, would you share this episode with them? You never know who might need this reminder today. If you're new here, welcome. My name is Michele, and here we have honest conversations about faith, chronic pain, invisible illness, resilience, and rediscovering joy—one step at a time.
