Ep. 86 – The Strength of Your Enemy

The Yetzer Hara is unbeatable—without Hashem's help. The Mesilas Yesharim reveals two terrifying aspects of our enemy: he's incredibly strong, and he's devastatingly sneaky. The Gemara in Kiddushin recounts how the Yetzer Hara grabbed hold of Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Meir, bringing them to the brink of severe aveiros. Only because Shamayim intervened—"Be careful of Rabbi Akiva and his Torah"—did the Yetzer Hara release them. If these gedolim nearly fell, what chance do you have? The Gemara warns that making fun of the Yetzer Hara awakens his full strength, and even great people end up destroyed. But strength isn't his only weapon—he's sneaky. A little bit at a time, he infiltrates your life until you're stuck and don't know how you got there. A guy dating someone seriously says, "Of course we're shomer negiah—except we hold hands." His therapist said it was fine. One small breach leads to the next, and before you know it, your life is ruined and you never saw it coming. The Yetzer Hara doesn't care about your pleasure or your future—he just wants you to do the aveira. Are you aware of how strong and subtle your enemy is? Will you stay vigilant, or will you be the next casualty?
