    Jesus Trejo Book Club EP. 009 - SARA DANIELE RIVERA

    Our guest this week is , Sara Daniele Rivera! She is a Cuban Peruvian American artist, writer, translator, and educator. Her writing has appeared in The BreakBeat Poets Vol. 4: LatiNext, Solstice, Waxwing, Speculative Fiction for Dreamers: A Latinx Anthology, and elsewhere. She was the recipient of a 2017 St. Botolph Club Emerging Artist Award, the winner of the 2018 Stephen Dunn Prize in Poetry (Solstice Magazine), and a 2022 Tin House resident. She is a co-translator of The Blinding Star: Selected Poems by Blanca Varela (Tolsun Books, 2021) and co-editor of Not Your Papi's Utopia: Latinx Visions of Radical Hope (Mouthfeel Press, 2025). Her debut book of poetry, The Blue Mimes (Graywolf Press, 2024), won the 2023 Academy of American Poets First Book Award. She lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her author/illustrator debut, Zara In the Middle will be published by HarperCollins in July 2025.     This week's guest! A lawyer and daughter of Guatemalan and Cuban bakers, Jessica Parra never objects to an extra slice of cake. She's a Los Angeles native who loves to write about Latinas with big hair (and chasing even bigger dreams), complicated families, and the healing magic of acceptance. She's the author of Rubi Ramos's Recipe for Success, The Quince Project, and many unfinished first drafts about cats living their best lives—all nine of them. When she isn't drafting books you can find her sipping kombucha, cuddling with her kitties, or co-piloting the Millennium Falcon at Disneyland's Galaxy's Edge.     Rafael Agustin

    This week we welcome Rafael Agustín! He was a writer on the award-winning The CW show, Jane The Virgin, is the author of the bestselling comedic memoir, Illegally Yours (Grand Central Publishing), and is a past Sundance Institute Episodic Fellow. Rafael was the founding Executive Director of the Youth Cinema Project and the founding CEO of the Latino Film Institute.  In 2018, LA Weekly named Rafael one of the fifty most essential people in Los Angeles. Also in 2018, the United Nations invited Rafael to speak at their 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 2022, the LA Times declared Rafael a "Power Player" in their inaugural LA Vanguardia class, and in 2023, Rafael received the Spirit of Los Angeles Award from the Program for Torture Victims. Rafael is a Board Member of National Film Preservation Board at the Library of Congress, and of Mother Jones Magazine, the oldest nonprofit investigative newsroom in the United States. Rafael received his AA from Mt.     Barney Saltzberg

    This week I meet with Barney Saltzberg who has close to fifty picture books published, Barney Saltzberg has been traveling the world talking about creativity and where ideas come from.  He lectured in China and Russia through a cultural exchange program through the United States State Department.   Barney is passionate about working with children, parents, teachers, organizations on the art of making mistakes and finding play and creativity in our everyday lives. His books have won numerous awards, including NAPPA Gold Awards, Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Starred Reviews.  Most recently Melinda Gates chose Beautiful Oops as one of the top three books every child should read.
