-- Hosting provided by SoundOn

EP48: Commentary of JohnChat_EP47 ft. NotebookLM Deep Dive

Welcome to the 2026 season premiere of JohnChat. This episode features an in-depth scholarly dialogue with two emerging experts in the field of Adapted Physical Education (APE): Rong-Yu Fan, a doctoral student at the University of Tsukuba and a Deaflympics national badminton athlete, and Han-Lin Yeh, a doctoral candidate at National Taiwan Normal University, former Universiade national team athlete, and a key advocate of Taiwan’s Adapted Physical Education initiatives. Currently supported by a Japanese government scholarship, Fan offers first-hand, practice-based observations from educational settings in Japan. Yeh, drawing on five to six years of sustained engagement in Taiwan’s adapted physical education programs, engages Fan in a comparative Taiwan–Japan dialogue that critically examines both structural and cultural dimensions of APE implementation. Key themes explored in this episode include: (1) Differences in inclusive education approaches between Taiwan and Japan—Fan observes that Japanese schools do not foreground “inclusion” as a formal label, but rather prioritize cultivating students’ intrinsic enjoyment of physical activity; even within general education classrooms, considerable emphasis is placed on providing appropriate and reasonable accommodations. (2) Professionalization of special needs education in Japan—special support schools demonstrate a high degree of institutional maturity, with career and lifelong health planning discussed with families as early as the first year of elementary school, informing the provision of high-frequency physical education to systematically build physical capacity. (3) Teacher preparation and certification systems—Japan’s long-established Para Sports Instructor certification emphasizes foundational instructional competencies rather than Paralympic-specific events, with professional development commonly scheduled on weekends, reflecting a culture of self-discipline and broad civic participation. (4) The imperative of differentiated instruction—both scholars concur that physical education teachers must possess the capacity for differentiated pedagogy, grounded in empathy and professional expertise, to ensure meaningful participation and benefit for students with diverse needs. Through this reflective yet analytically grounded conversation, the episode underscores that beyond formal policy frameworks, shared cultural understandings and robust professional support systems are critical to the sustainable development of adapted physical education. Understanding the Taiwan–Japan contrasts in APE is akin to observing the growth of the same plant in different soils: while nutrient distribution and pruning practices may vary, the ultimate objective remains the same—to enable human potential to flourish in a healthy and holistic manner. -- Hosting provided by SoundOn

-- Hosting provided by SoundOn

EP50: Commentary of JohnChat_EP49 ft. NotebookLM Deep Dive

Key Insight If sport equity is conceived as a bridge, Japan’s policy framework can be understood as constructing robust access roads on both ends: on one side, highly calibrated governmental policy guidance; on the other, long-term corporate career commitments. Together, these structures enable athletes to transition securely from the competitive arena into broader social participation. Episode Overview Welcome to JohnChat. This episode continues the in-depth discussion from the previous installment, featuring two doctoral researchers—Rong-Yu Fan, a Ministry of Education–funded doctoral student at the University of Tsukuba, and Han-Lin Yeh, a doctoral candidate at National Taiwan Normal University—who engage in a comparative analysis of sport equity policies and practices in Japan and Taiwan. Fan provides a detailed examination of Japan’s well-established athlete employment system, which delineates athletic careers into three primary pathways: full-time training, dual-track arrangements combining employment and training, and post-retirement transition into corporate roles. Central to this system is Japan’s enduring emphasis on lifetime employment, which allows athletes with disabilities not only to extend their competitive careers but also to leverage their resilience and discipline as corporate representatives or specialized professionals. The conversation further addresses how Japan’s Sports Agency operationalizes policy through clearly defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), strategically allocating public funding to private corporations and non-profit organizations—such as NHK and Yamaha—to deliver large-scale sport expos and elite competitions. These initiatives are supported by evidence-based research and big-data analytics, reinforcing the promotion of sport participation across the population. In reflecting on Taiwan’s newly established Ministry of Sports, Yeh and host John consider how Japan’s model may offer valuable reference points—particularly in designing incentive structures that encourage corporate engagement in career planning for athletes with disabilities, and in fostering the concept of “inclusive membership” as a socially embedded norm rather than a policy mandate. In this vision, sport functions not merely as physical activity, but as a social bridge capable of transcending structural and cultural barriers. Whether your interest lies in public policy development, corporate social responsibility, or the long-term trajectories of athletes, this episode offers a rigorous and thought-provoking perspective on the evolving landscape of inclusive and equitable sport. -- Hosting provided by SoundOn

-- Hosting provided by SoundOn

Welcome to the 2026 season premiere of JohnChat. Yu-Hsuan (pen name: Ainsley Chou) is a creator with a deep passion for literature, painting, and imagination. She lives with a rare congenital condition, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), and has long relied on a powered wheelchair for mobility, with daily living supported by her family. Relevant information and selected works can be found at: https://mochifish407.wixsite.com/ainsley-art https://artogo.co/zh-TW/exhibition/Ainsley https://www.tba.tw/artists/946 In her academic trajectory, Yu-Hsuan graduated in 2020 from the Department of Special Education at National Taiwan Normal University. Although deeply interested in special education, she encountered significant challenges during her practicum, particularly in addressing students’ complex emotional and behavioral needs, which she felt were difficult to navigate given her relatively limited life experiences. As a result, she decided to shift her academic focus toward the field she felt most passionate about—literature. She obtained her Master’s degree in Language and Creative Writing from National Taipei University of Education in January 2026. Her master’s thesis, titled Writing Depression in Modern Taiwanese Poetry, examines how persons with disabilities have often been represented in literary works not as subjects in their own right, but rather as narrative devices or metaphors that serve plot development. Through an analysis of poetic works by writers experiencing depressive symptoms, Yu-Hsuan proposes the concept of “in-betweenness”, exploring how poets continuously traverse and permeate the liminal boundaries between illness (abnormality) and health (normality), as well as between death and life. Currently, Yu-Hsuan is preparing to pursue doctoral studies, with the aspiration to further excavate and “reclaim” the overlooked fragments of disability literature within literary history, and to develop a scholarly research framework of her own. -- Hosting provided by SoundOn

For more information about her work, please visit: https://mochifish407.wixsite.com/ainsley-art https://artogo.co/zh-TW/exhibition/Ainsley https://www.tba.tw/artists/946 Yu-Hsuan has previously been an important advocate for Adapted Physical Education (APE) in Taiwan. She contributed to the planning and promotion of nationwide touring microfilm exhibitions and photography competitions, dedicated to safeguarding every student’s equal right to participate in physical education. In this episode, Yu-Hsuan shares her rich and multifaceted creative world. Beginning with her digital illustration series Backstage of the Landing Circus, she introduces listeners to a set of distinctive animal figures—such as the Hide-and-Seek Elephant, the Borrowed-Body Panda, and the Mona Crocodile. Through these imaginative images, she invites audiences to observe the world with pure curiosity, rather than rushing to judgment. She has also collaborated with the New Big Wheel Association on the design of postcard projects, using warm visual narratives to challenge public stereotypes toward street vendors with disabilities, while exploring the aspirations of people with disabilities for independent living and a co-living community. Looking ahead, Yu-Hsuan is preparing to pursue doctoral studies, with the goal of articulating a history of disability literature in Taiwan, tracing the evolving vitality of disability representations within literary contexts. She is also in the process of envisioning the establishment of a boundary-breaking creative collective, tentatively titled The Lost Society, which seeks to transcend temporal and spatial limitations and invite broader public participation in diverse forms of creative practice. Curious to learn how Yu-Hsuan explores bodily fluidity through drawing and writing, and how she challenges entrenched social frameworks surrounding disability?
