The Kortney Wilson Podcast

Kortney Wilson

The Kortney Wilson Podcast (formerly The Sh*t Stick of Life) is about the people who've turned life's hardest hits into vibrant next chapters, failure, betrayal, tragedy, loss, and all the "taboo" stuff that's uncomfortable to talk about but needs to be said anyway. It's also just as much about the everyday conversations that matter for real personal growth. Every episode is a real, honest, often funny conversation about the realness of life's ups and downs, and how we go from surviving to thriving. Host and "re-visionary" Kortney Wilson knows reinvention firsthand, actress (including the soap opera One Life to Live), signed recording artist, reality TV star, author, real estate agent, house flipper, home designer with her own furniture line, content creator, and host of multiple shows on HGTV and Home Network. When her 20-year "perfect" marriage ended and decades of secrets came to light, it upended everything she thought she knew about her life. Now she shares her own story and goes deep with heroes, artists, authors, activists, and more, who've reinvented themselves after extraordinary setbacks. Hosted on Acast. What Adoptees Wish Their Parents Knew | S3 E3 | Bethlehem Ambaw and Ann Petersen

Kortney has been an adoptive mom for almost eighteen years, and most of that time has been spent trying to get it right. But good intentions don’t guarantee you get it right, and adoption isn’t a story that ends when a child comes home. It keeps unfolding for the rest of their life. In this episode she sits down with Bethlehem, who was adopted from Ethiopia, and Ann, who was adopted from Korea. Two very different experiences, two different families, two different countries. They talk about what they were told growing up and when. Whether they ever felt different, or whether other people made it a thing before they did. Their relationship with the countries they were born in, and whether their families knew how to keep that connection alive. The pressure to be grateful, and where it came from. What their parents got right, what they wish had gone differently, and the things said with the best intentions that landed completely wrong. And the question Kortney most wanted answered: what do you wish adoptive parents understood? The point of this conversation wasn’t to decide whether adoption is good or bad. It was to stop assuming and start listening to the people who’ve actually lived it. When Your Kids Become Adults | S3 E2 | Margaret Ruttan, Jennifer Reid, & Marylynne Stella

When your kids are little, everybody has advice. The books, the mom groups, strangers in the grocery store. And then one day they’re grown and everyone goes quiet, like the job is over. In this episode, Kortney sits down with Margaret Ruttan, Jennifer Reid, and Marylynne Stella, three women who are either right in the thick of this with her or a few steps ahead. They get into the moment the relationship shifted, what parenting an adult actually looks like compared to parenting a teenager, and the hardest skill of all: knowing when to step in and when to keep your mouth shut. They talk about boundaries around money, advice, and the people their kids choose. About apologizing to your grown children, and what happens when they remember their childhood differently than you do. About what’s been harder than anyone expected, what’s quietly gotten better, and the guilt that never fully goes away. Mostly it’s four women admitting that nobody has this figured out, well maybe Margaret does, and that the relationship doesn’t end when they grow up. It just changes shape.
