    Permission to Break the Rules

Hey friend— Whether you're navigating chronic illness, burnout, heartbreak, or just a life that keeps throwing curveballs—some of the so-called “rules” we’ve been handed about how to live, work, and be are downright unhelpful. In this episode of The Art of Resilience Podcast, we’re tearing a few of those up. This is a powerful and much-needed topic—exploring how living with a chronic illness often requires breaking unspoken rules and expectations in order to reclaim agency, identity, and joy. From toxic productivity myths to workplace cultures that reward burnout, I share the invisible scripts I had to unlearn to start actually thriving—not just surviving. We’ll talk about how to exit environments (and relationships) that suck the life out of you, how to not be everyone’s always-positive, always-available friend, and why real boundaries aren’t about avoidance—they’re about repair. These rules and standards aren't designed for bodies in pain, fluctuating energy levels, or the unpredictability of chronic symptoms. * “Pushing through” can lead to flares or massive setbacks * Rest isn’t optional—it’s survival * Traditional measures of success often become irrelevant * Masking your pain for others’ comfort erodes authenticity Let me tell you a secret and smash this lie. Many times, these rules aren’t even made for any person! Breaking the rules isn’t rebellion—it’s wisdom. Oh—and if you’ve ever spiraled into Netflix-and-scroll territory and called it “rest”… to mitigate the blues often brought on by pain, fatigue, or symptoms—we’re going there too (with zero shame). These “self-care” pop culture scripts can often feel blurry and lead us into inaction and paralysis. Let’s rewrite the rules and give ourselves permission to heal differently. When was the last time you fully enjoyed a meal?🧐

Happy Friday! Meals aren’t just another item on your to-do list—they’re a privilege and a joy. Some foods have the power to trigger the best memories (science agrees!), which makes eating a meaningful way to build resilience. So here’s your friendly reminder: meals can actually help regulate your nervous system and support your stress response throughout the day. And hey—while you're at it, toss in some colorful, nutrient-dense goodness (wink wink). If you have a chronic illness… Eating can be relegated to either something we have to do and we have lost pleasure in savoring our meals all together. This is normal but it doesn’t have to be. Recovering this joy is a very powerful tool to shift the course of our physical and our mental health. Maybe you’re living with a chronic illness that makes it tough to enjoy meals like “normal” folks do—and I see you. Working with a nutritionist to identify foods that won’t trigger pain, discomfort, or flares can make a big difference. That’s why I’m sharing this amazing evidence-based resource to help support and empower your healing journey. 💛 P.S. Did you know that if you download the Substack app, you’ll unlock access to chats and extra podcast goodies? Just sayin’. 👀 If this topic interested you… Here’s an amazing video I used back in my teaching days during the nutrition module. It’s not just about being mindful with your food—it’s a powerful tool to help us recognize the deeper dysfunctions and habits that often show up at the table. 🍽️ Worth a watch if you're ready to shift the way you think about eating. How to Use Mindfulness in Eating by Headspace Here’s a helpful article written by nutritionists on the matter if you want to dive deeper: Mindful Eating 101 — A Beginner’s Guide And if you missed on the video I linked if you have IBS, you will find it below: The Gut Doctor: The root cause of IBS – and how to treat it | Dr. Will Bulsiewicz This is a public episode. Matthew 6:14-15 21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.[g] 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.[h] 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant[i] fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii,[j] and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers,[k] until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” Matthew 18: 21-35 On the vengeance of the God It is mine to avenge; I will repay. Recovering Joy & Purpose

Important Disclaimer: None of the information in this podcast, my social media or website is meant to treat a medical condition or supplement the vital role healthcare practitioners have. My work is only meant to encourage you to seek help from these experts. I only share my experience as a person and patient. As I plan content for the podcast, I find myself sifting through the archives of my life—old notes, journals, mementos. I’m interviewing my parents, asking high school friends questions, and, little by little, patterns are beginning to emerge. It stings to admit this, but even in the moments I thought I was my “happiest” over the past 24 years—serving others, traveling, staying super busy—I looked different to others than I imagined myself. I did. In the early stages of my illness, when I was still a pure extrovert and a crazy strong leader, friends noticed I was pulling away, retreating into myself. They couldn’t pinpoint why. It was physical pain. Looking back at my journals, I saw how I “lost purpose” around the time I graduated college. By the time I was working in nonprofit organizations, I clearly remember a dear friend saying to me, “Jaasiel, my prayer is that the L-rd would return to you the years of your youth and renew your strength.” I thought, “What the heck?! Do I really look that old and old and lost?” 😅 Years later, I saw photos of myself from that time—hunched over, looking oddly fragile and unstable. Good heavens! This was hard to swallow—I must admit—it was really hard to see myself in pictures. Those were all signs that something wasn’t okay with me—I was merely surviving. My body hunched unconsciously, trying to protect itself from the pain. Though I pushed through with a smile, put on makeup, and burned every last drop of adrenaline to appear “normal,” it still showed. Worse yet, deep inside, I knew I had lost my joy and purpose. I was battling depression, deep sadness and loss over dreams and hope. Did you know the Art of Resilience Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts & Spotify? Here’s the thing about chronic illness: one of its many silver linings (yes, there’s more than one) is that it ages you—not just physically, but emotionally. You bury dreams so fast it’s dizzying. I’ve had a mid-life crisis… twice! But on the flip side, you learn lessons and mature faster than most people. You figure out what really matters and learn to value it deeply—often much sooner than others. To my dearest sister from another mother, who prayed that heartfelt prayer for me so many years ago: G-d has heard you. Havah, thank you!. 🥰 In this episode, I dive deep into the importance of reclaiming purpose and joy when living with chronic illness. I also explore the concept of neuroplasticity, which has revolutionized the treatment of chronic pain. Our brains can be rewired, our thought patterns do matter, and recovering joy and purpose—whether you’re living with a chronic illness or not—is absolutely possible. All of us struggle with something, you don’t have to be sick to battle something. Our past, trauma, our fears and apprehensions, comparing ourselves against others. So I want to offer you a challenge, to know whatever the thoughts that hunt you deep inside, these can be turned around. Recovering and having a deep sense of purpose and joy is something we cannot afford to ignore. Humans are like diamonds. We were made with multifaceted beauty. Tragedy, sickness, and even depression is part of the human experience. When tragedy and sickness strikes, remember, we are not just one thing. There’s treasures untold inside all of us and it is up to us to discover what our Creator put inside us, that multifaceted diamond is waiting for you to discover and rejoice in it. Let’s do it! Myself or the illness...

In this episode, I want to share with you seven commitment goals that have been essential to my journey of self-recovery and steadily climbing out of a dark chapter in my life. Each of these goals stems from one core principle: a strong personal commitment to discovering and expressing who I truly am versus allowing the illness define my path and limit all possibilities. Those of us living with chronic illness know this inner battle all too well. We try countless supplements, techniques, therapies, and medications. We've probably visited over a dozen practitioners and still keep several in our medical arsenal. We fight, fight, fight! But that’s not were the battle is won! The battle is won in the inner chambers of our hearts and minds. Was I going to sit depressed, and allow the illness to ravage my body, mind, and future. No! IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: The friend referred to in this podcast gave me his permission to share his journey. He knows where I am coming from and he’s been with me in similar valleys of my battle with chronic illness. These seven practices aren’t a cure. They won’t guarantee perfect days, but they are deeply tied to my physical well-being, mental health, spiritual walk, and most importantly, they are my declaration of war against the harsh verdicts of illness. So join me as I share my journey. And please, leave a comment! What are your commitment goals? Why do you do them, and what do they look like for you? Can’t wait to hear from you!-xoxo, Jaasiel!
