A Pastor’s Path to the Missal of 1962: Fr. Chris Podhajsky on Liturgy, Culture, and the Ordinary and Extraordinary Forms

In this wide-ranging conversation, Fr. Chris Podhajsky—parochial vicar in the Archdiocese of Dubuque and a key figure in bringing the Missal of 1962 (Traditional Latin Mass / Extraordinary Form) to the Cedar Rapids area—shares his journey from a faithful Iowa farm family and Loras College through St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore to 25 years of priesthood. He discusses how Summorum Pontificum (2007) led him to learn and offer the older form of the Mass in response to local requests, the slow growth of that community, and why he sees the two missals as meant to mutually enrich one another rather than as rivals. Fr. Podhajsky emphasizes that the deeper post-Vatican II crisis was less about rubrics and more about the loss of liturgical culture, the dumping of moral teaching (especially around contraception and openness to life, beginning even before the Council), and the need to recover the original goal of the liturgical movement: full, actual participation in praying the Mass itself. Topics include his seminary experience amid the cultural upheaval of the late 20th century, the importance of reverence at the words of consecration, practical ways the faithful can more actively offer themselves at Mass (whether in the 1962 or 2002 Missal), the connection between liturgical culture and a culture of life, challenges in OCIA formation, geopolitics and the Church’s voice, social media, pornography, and his hopes for Pope Leo’s approach to liturgy—prioritizing reverence and culture in the Ordinary Form while remaining open to the older form. A thoughtful, grounded reflection from a priest formed in a strong Catholic home who came to appreciate the Missal of 1962 not as a program but as a pastoral response and a living expression of the Church’s heritage. links https://www.usccb.org/cleanheart https://exodus90.com https://integrityrestored.com

Sean McVeigh joins us to talk about bow hunting, evangelization, and some hot button topics

Sean embodies the thrill of the hunt and the depth of faith. As a devoted Catholic evangelist, bowhunting mentor, and author, he has spent years bridging the wild outdoors with spiritual growth. From treestands to the pages of his books, he shows how drawing a bow can teach us to draw closer to God. Whether you’re a fellow hunter seeking bigger bucks or a seeker hunting for truth, Sean’s story will inspire you to aim higher. Based in Iowa, Sean runs McVeigh Ministries, a Catholic outreach that equips men—especially young adults and teens—with tools for faith, virtue, and outdoor adventure. His work has touched thousands through books, speaking engagements, and his podcast, Faith and the Outdoors, where he explores how hunting rituals mirror the pursuit of holiness. As you’ll hear in the episode, I was unaware of Sean’s bowhunting books and popular YouTube channel—to my embarrassment, it all unfolds in the podcast. Note to other podcasters: do better research than I did! Nevertheless, he was kind enough to share his incredible passion for hunting, evangelization, and the Catholic faith.
