Franchising remains an unintentional profession. Most people don't go to school to study about how to become involved in franchising. Rather, some life event causes it to find us. Each episode of the podcast begins with a look back at how franchising found that week's guest. This is followed by a walk through the milestones of their journey and career, up to and including the present day. My guests could be franchisors, franchisees or suppliers, who provide insights into high-level support services or top-quality products to better enable the franchise community. Each podcast will wrap with a look ahead to upcoming industry events, upcoming guests or important dates on the horizon.

From the Gym Floor to The Little Gym Brand President: Samantha Musonda’s Remarkable Journey

Franchising has a funny way of finding people who never went looking for it. Samantha Musonda was finishing her psychology degree at Temple University when her dance-team coach suggested a part-time job teaching gymnastics at a nearby, "The Little Gym." Samantha started by teaching classes and running birthday parties. It was supposed to be a stopgap before beginning a career, but that's not how it turned out. Eight years later, Samantha left the franchise location she'd grown up in professionally and moved across the country to join The Little Gym International as a Franchise Business Coach, initially supporting roughly 60 franchisees. She went on to lead franchise support, became Director of Consulting and, following The Little Gym's acquisition by Unleashed Brands, moved into the VP of Operations role. Today, she's Brand President. Samantha joins Stan Friedman to talk candidly about that climb—including the mentors who opened doors, the importance of actually telling people you want to grow, and the inevitable moments of self-doubt that accompany leadership. They also look at The Little Gym today as it celebrates its 50th anniversary, with approximately 275 locations operating in the U.S. and Canada and more than 100 more, internationally. Samantha shares how the brand supports franchisees, where AI can genuinely make their lives easier, what she looks for at Discovery Day and why the best franchisees build community rather than simply market, locally. And then comes the challenge ahead: How do you evolve a 50-year-old brand without losing the very things that made it successful? Samantha Musonda kicks off Season 18, this week on Franchise Today.

ENCORE: “Shelly Sun Berkowitz on Building, Exiting and Giving Back.

What happens after an entrepreneur builds the company, scales it and ultimately lets it go? For Shelly Sun Berkowitz, the answer is, "another chapter of purpose." Shelly founded BrightStar Care in 2002 after her own family struggled to find comprehensive care for her grandmother. She began franchising the concept in 2005 and went on to build one of the most recognized brands in home healthcare. But the journey came with sacrifices. During COVID, Shelly describes working 20-hour days protecting caregivers and patients. At the same time, her son Luke needed more of her. Family, legacy and the kind of life she wanted beyond BrightStar began taking on new importance. Then came the extraordinarily personal process of selling the company she had spent more than two decades building. Shelly discusses walking away from a potential buyer whose values she felt did not align with hers, and ultimately completing the transaction with Peak Rock Capital. Today, she's putting all of her lessons learned to work for other entrepreneurs. Through Founder to Founder, Shelly provides founders with the emotional and tactical guidance she believes is often missing when preparing to scale or sell. Through Next Phase Capital, she's also working to provide patient capital designed to help founders grow while preserving ownership and equity. The conversation goes deeper into exit strategies, financial literacy, the barriers women entrepreneurs continue to face in accessing capital, and why the biggest number isn't necessarily the best outcome. Most of all, it's a conversation about what success looks like after you've already achieved the success everyone else can see. This week, Franchise Today closes out Season 17, with Stan Friedman revisiting his 2025 conversation with entrepreneur extraordinaire, Shelly Sun Berkowitz. Stan labels this conversation as Top 10 of all time, which includes 600+ Franchisor interviews.

Human Judgment in an AI World: FranNet President Amanda Duplantis on Franchising's Future

Amanda Duplantis didn't set out to build a career in franchising. At 21, armed with a biology degree and uncertain about what came next, she moved from Louisiana to Colorado and joined LearningRx at the ground level, working for a multi-unit franchisee. What began as a first job became a 16-year education in franchising, as Amanda advanced through virtually every level of the organization, ultimately becoming Executive Director. Her first IFA convention opened her eyes to a much larger franchise world. Four years ago, a LinkedIn posting led her to FranNet. She joined as Director of Training and, on January 1st of this year, became President. This week on Franchise Today, Amanda joins Stan Friedman to discuss that journey and the lessons she's learned about leadership, systems, franchisee relationships and navigating change. The conversation explores FranNet's unique model, where consultants are themselves franchisees helping prospective entrepreneurs identify franchise opportunities, and how the organization navigated the difficult decision to eliminate exclusive territories and allow consultants to operate nationally. Amanda also shares her decidedly practical approach to AI: Don't chase every new technology. Identify one or two real business problems, solve them well, and remain franchisee first. Then there's today's franchise buyer. AI has created extraordinarily well-researched candidates—but sometimes all that information creates analysis paralysis. Technology can organize data, but can it assess grit, motivation, commitment and fit? Amanda believes human judgment and relationships remain essential. Back to the Future with Jeff Dudan: Bringing AdvantaClean Home

Sometimes the future has a funny way of bringing you back to things all began. This week on Franchise Today, Jeff Dudan, Chairman and CEO of Homefront Brands returns for a conversation that truly takes us Back to the Future. Jeff's franchising story traces back to the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. That experience ultimately led him to found AdvantaClean, and build it into a national franchise restoration franchise company, and spend nearly a quarter century growing it, before eventually selling the business. But Jeff's story didn't end there. He went on to create Homefront Brands, building a multi-brand home and property services platform that has grown to hundreds of franchise owners across hundreds of markets. And now comes the remarkable full-circle chapter: Jeff Dudan and AdvantaClean are together again. Jeff shares the story behind reacquiring the brand he founded, what he's learned from leading multiple franchise systems, and why the Jeff Dudan returning to AdvantaClean today is a very different leader from the entrepreneur who started it more than three decades ago. We also explore Jeff's philosophy of working backward from a clearly defined future, why genuine care for franchisee outcomes must remain at the center of franchising, and why responsiveness, accountability and relationships still matter enormously in a rapidly changing business world. He built it. He sold it. He built something bigger. And then he brought it home. It's Back to the Future with Jeff Dudan, this week on Franchise Today.

From 'Man in a Van' to a Global Franchise: Nic Brill's Poolwerx Story

How do you transform one of the world's most fragmented service industries into a scalable global franchise? This week on Franchise Today, Stan Friedman welcomes Nic Brill, Global CEO of Poolwerx, whose journey from paper sales in South Africa to leading the world's largest pool service franchise is anything but conventional. Nic shares how a passion for branding, franchising, and ultimately swimming led him to Poolwerx, where the company has grown to more than 400 locations supported by approximately 700 service vehicles across multiple countries. Together, Stan and Nic discuss: • Why fragmented industries often create the greatest franchise opportunities• How Poolwerx transformed the traditional "man in a van" business into a recognized global brand• Why recurring service revenue creates an attractive franchise model• How COVID accelerated consumer demand for backyard wellness and outdoor living• Why colder U.S. markets may represent some of the company's greatest future opportunities• How franchisees can grow from a single service vehicle into multi-vehicle operations and retail locations• Why AI will improve operations—but never replace trusted customer relationships Nic also shares why Poolwerx refers to itself as "The Healthy Pool People," and how a "people-first" culture continues to drive the company's expansion across Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Whether you're interested in franchising, home services, or building scalable businesses in overlooked industries, you'll find valuable lessons in this engaging conversation. Because sometimes the greatest franchise opportunities are hiding in plain sight.
