7 - Finding Gold in the Cracks: Gail Rossi’s Story of Strength, Resilience, and Self-Advocacy

In this powerful episode, Becky sits down with author and scoliosis advocate Gail Rossi to share her remarkable journey through decades of pain, surgeries, and ultimately, self-acceptance. Gail opens up about discovering her scoliosis at just 11 years old, being dismissed by those around her, and learning to advocate for herself in a world that didn’t fully understand her condition. She takes us through the emotional and physical challenges of eight major spinal fusion surgeries, including life-threatening complications and the realities of living with a fused spine from her neck to her lower back. Despite it all, Gail’s humor, resilience, and deep sense of community shine through. She reflects on the importance of asking for help, embracing imperfections, and finding strength in vulnerability. Gail also shares why she wrote her memoir, Tilted Temple: My Life with Scoliosis, and how telling her story has helped others feel less alone. You’ll hear about her ongoing mission to help a young man in Morocco access life-changing care, proving that even through personal pain, we can create purpose and connection. If you’ve ever struggled to find your voice, felt alone in your journey, or wondered if you’re strong enough to keep going—this episode is for you. 6 - A Physical Therapist’s Take on Scoliosis Care & Movement

Strength training and scoliosis might not seem like an obvious match, but the right approach can make a world of difference. In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Beth Terranova, a physical therapist, strength coach, and founder of Strength and Spine. As someone who has scoliosis herself and has competed in Olympic-style weightlifting, Beth brings a unique perspective on how strength training can be a powerful tool for spinal health. We break down the benefits of strength training for scoliosis, the role of the Schroth Method, and why movement matters even after spinal fusion. Beth also addresses common misconceptions, shares practical advice for getting started, and sheds light on the gaps in scoliosis physical therapy. If you’ve ever wondered how to move safely and effectively with scoliosis, this episode is packed with valuable insights! Beth's Bio "I was diagnosed with scoliosis just before starting high school, but I didn't really understand what it meant for me. My back had a 30 degree thoracic and 22 degree lumbar curve, and I didn't even remember seeing the X-ray of my back. Despite my scoliosis, I started weightlifting and even became a national competitor. I always felt off-balance and wondered why my ribs stuck out, but no coach, trainer, or physical therapist could explain it to me. One coach even referred to me as "the hunchback" due to my rib prominence. While studying to become a physical therapist, I discovered the Schroth method for scoliosis, which finally made sense of my experiences. I started Strength and Spine in 2020 to help people with scoliosis and spinal fusion from all over the world work out in the gym, combining my knowledge of Schroth and strength training. My clients were getting stronger and feeling empowered, just like I did when I learned about my own scoliosis. I became the coach I needed when I was growing up, and I see my scoliosis as a gift that allows me to help and inspire others to feel strong and empowered in their own lives."
