Why I Keep Telling My Kids to Rise

As a dad, I've found myself saying the same word to my kids over and over again. Rise. Rise above your emotions. Rise above your first reaction. Rise above disappointment. Rise above what someone else said or did. For a while, I wondered if they were even listening. Then I realized something... I'm not trying to win today's conversation. I'm trying to shape the people they'll become twenty years from now. I've come to believe that today's micro moments become tomorrow's macro moments. The disagreement between siblings... The car ride home after soccer practice... The missed shot in a basketball game... The way they talk to themselves after making a mistake... Those moments aren't interruptions. They're rehearsals for life. In this episode, I share a simple family exercise we call "Meet Your Best Self." It's not about pretending to be someone you're not. It's about helping our children recognize the courageous, kind, disciplined, and resilient person God is shaping them to become. Because confidence isn't something we can give our children. It's something they build... one courageous choice at a time. I've created a companion Meet Your Best Self Family Night Guide that you can use around your own dinner table. Inside you'll find: • A simple family conversation guide • Reflection questions for every child • A "Best Self" activity • Challenge scenarios to practice responding under pressure • A weekly family tradition you can start tonight If this episode encouraged you, download the guide and make it your own. My hope is that these conversations won't just help your children perform better... They'll help them become the kind of people who rise when life gets hard. Because that's what we're really raising. Not successful kids. Courageous adults. I would not ask people to "like and subscribe." Instead, end the description with a challenge: Tonight, ask your child one question: "Where did your Best Self show up today?" You might be surprised how one simple question begins to shape a lifetime of character. Around here, we don't just listen—we practice. Download this week's Family Guide and continue the conversation around your own dinner table.

7 Lessons I Hope My Children Learn Before Adulthood

This week, I had a conversation with a business owner that unexpectedly turned into a lesson about fatherhood. He told me he wanted to leave a legacy for his children. At first, it sounded like a business conversation. But the more we talked, the more I realized the lessons hidden inside had very little to do with business and everything to do with life. It made me think about the lessons I hope my own children learn before adulthood. Lessons about courage. Lessons about self-worth. Lessons about disappointment. Lessons about decision-making. Lessons about believing in themselves even when nobody else does. In this episode, I share seven powerful lessons that emerged from that conversation and how they apply to raising confident, resilient, and purpose-driven children. We'll discuss: • Why most people want a legacy but don't make legacy decisions • How past disappointments can shape future opportunities • Why staying stuck is often more expensive than taking action • The importance of knowing your value before the world recognizes it • Why not every "no" means rejection • The role of self-belief in achieving your goals • What legacy really means and how it's built every day If you're a parent, mentor, coach, or someone who wants to prepare the next generation for life, this episode is for you. Because one day our children will face challenges we cannot solve for them. The question is: What lessons are we teaching them now that will help them navigate those moments later?
