San Diego Tableau User Group 05 Jun 2026

Presented by Andy Kriebel | Tableau Visionary Hall of Famer | Founder, Next Level Tableau Fresh off Tableau Conference, the San Diego Tableau User Group welcomed Andy Kriebel for an engaging session on one of Tableau's most powerful—and often underutilized—features: Marks Layers. Andy demonstrated how Marks Layers can be used not only for geospatial analysis, but also as a foundation for building sophisticated custom visualizations that would otherwise require multiple worksheets, containers, and complex dashboard layouts. Through live demonstrations and real-world examples, attendees learned how to combine multiple data sources, work with spatial functions, create custom coordinate systems, and design entirely new chart types within a single Tableau worksheet. Whether you're interested in mapping, dashboard design, visual storytelling, or simply pushing Tableau beyond traditional charts, this session is packed with ideas and techniques you can apply immediately in your own work. Topics Covered • Understanding Tableau Marks Layers • Combining multiple spatial data sources on a single map • Working with points, lines, polygons, and spatial calculations • Using spatial functions such as Intersects and Buffers • Building custom visualizations without maps • Creating XY coordinate systems in Tableau • Designing KPI charts, timelines, gauges, calendars, and more • Advanced dashboard design techniques • Real-world examples from Next Level Tableau Featured Examples • Layering neighborhoods, transit routes, recreation centers, and fire stations on a single map • Commuter flow analysis • Transportation network visualizations • Crime and public safety analysis • Hurricane impact visualizations • KPI barcode charts • Hex map bar charts • Calendar visualizations • Marginal histograms • Gauge charts • Timeline jump plots Learn More from Andy Kriebel Interested in continuing your Tableau learning journey?
