Episode 31: Why Small Things Lead to Big Reactions

Have you ever wondered why something as small as putting away shoes or choosing the "wrong" cup can lead to a full meltdown? Often, those moments aren't really about what just happened. They're the result of a nervous system that has been carrying stress all day. In this episode of Parenting Through Connection, I explore why looking beneath the behaviour helps us respond with more compassion, reduce shame, and create more connection for both ourselves and our children. In this episode, I cover: • Why meltdowns are often the result of cumulative stress, not a single triggering moment • How nervous system capacity changes from day to day for both children and parents • Why reducing pressure and simplifying your day can sometimes be more supportive than adding another parenting strategy • Practical ways to build recovery into your family's routine so everyone has space to regulate • How understanding nervous system load helps us respond with greater awareness while still holding loving boundaries I hope this episode helps you see challenging moments through a new lens and reminds you that behaviour always has a story beneath it. Small shifts in awareness can make a meaningful difference in how we show up for ourselves and our children. Episode 30: Why Meltdown Strategies Don’t Always Work

You’re not alone in the discomfort you feel when meltdowns happen; meltdowns can trigger uncomfortable feelings like shame, helplessness, overwhelm, and desperation as we try to find the “right” response to calm our kid down or get them to listen. But what if the problem isn't that you don't have the right strategy, it's that you're using it at the wrong time? Today on Parenting Through Connection, I walk you through the full arc of a meltdown, from the earliest signs of dysregulation to the moments of repair afterward. When we understand what our child's nervous system is experiencing at each stage, we can respond with greater confidence, compassion, and connection.  In this episode, I cover: Why meltdowns are a process, not a single moment, and how recognizing the stages changes everythingThe subtle cues your child may be nearing dysregulation before a meltdown beginsWhy common parenting strategies often backfire when they're used at the wrong stageWhat your child actually needs during the peak of a meltdownHow repair and reflection after a meltdown help build emotional regulation and strengthen your relationshipI hope this episode gives you a new perspective on meltdowns, one that is rooted in connection over control. Episode 29: Navigating Your Child’s Diagnosis with Grief, Hope, and Compassion

In this episode, I want to create space for feelings that often go unspoken. When your child receives a diagnosis, we often expect to feel relief because we finally have answers. But what many parents don't talk about is that relief can exist alongside grief, fear, guilt, confusion, and hope, all at the same time. A diagnosis doesn't change who your child is, but it can change how you understand them, support them, and advocate for them. Most importantly, it can open the door to deeper compassion, stronger connection, and a path forward that feels more aligned with your child's unique needs.  In this episode, I discuss: Why grief after a diagnosis doesn't mean you love or accept your child any lessHow to navigate feelings of guilt and use self-compassion to move forwardWhy slowing down can be more supportive than rushing into “fixing” modeHow a diagnosis can shift us from frustration and judgment into greater curiosity and understandingThe impact comparison can have on your parenting journey and how to stay connected to your child's unique pathHow to support your child through conversations that reduce shame and build confidence and self-understandingWhether you're in the middle of an assessment process, have recently received answers, or are supporting a child with additional needs, I want you to know that every feeling you have is welcome here. Episode 28: From Compliance to Cooperation: The Real Reason Your Child Won't Listen

Maybe you’re validating feelings, staying calm, and offering choices, but underneath it all, you’re still hoping your child will simply listen and cooperate right away. In this episode of Parenting Through Connection, I’m exploring something that keeps parents stuck: using parenting tools with the same old goal of compliance. We’ll unpack the difference between parenting through control versus parenting through connection and how shifting the power dynamic can create more trust, cooperation, and connection. In this episode, we talk about: Why changing your parenting language doesn’t always change the relationship dynamicThe difference between “power over” parenting, “power under” parenting, and “power with” parentingHow fear and old patterns can pull us back into authoritarian or permissive parentingWhy boundaries and connection can exist togetherThe importance of building long-term influence with your child through “power with” parentingQuestions to ask yourself to parent more intentionally and in alignment with your valuesThis episode is an invitation to notice what’s underneath the parenting tools you’re using. Not with judgment, but with compassion. If this conversation resonates with you and you’re looking for deeper support, my Rooted in the Middle parenting program is designed to help you define your parenting values and create a roadmap toward the relationship you want with your child. Episode 27: When Kids Lie and How to Navigate it

When your child lies, it can feel personal and deeply triggering. But lying isn’t a sign that something is wrong, it’s actually a very normal, developmental part of growing up. Today on Parenting Through Connection, I walk you through what’s really happening when your child lies, why it can feel so overwhelming, and how you can respond in a way that builds connection instead of breaking it. Even in these moments, there are opportunities to strengthen trust and guide your child towards honesty in a way that actually lasts. Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode: Why lying is a normal part of child development and how it supports skills like empathy, self-awareness, and emotional regulationWhat gets triggered in us as parents when our kids lie, including fears about the future and our own past experiences with trust and deceptionWhy kids lie and the reasons parents don’t immediately seeHow certain responses can unintentionally turn lying into a protective habit instead of a passing phaseThe importance of fostering honesty through support, rather than defaulting to accusation and fearIf this is something you’re navigating right now, I want you to know this doesn’t define your child and it doesn’t define you as a parent. Honesty is a skill that takes time, practice, and a lot of support to grow. When we shift how we respond, we can completely change the trajectory of these moments. If you’re ready to feel more confident handling situations like this, I’d love to invite you into my Rooted in the Middle parenting program. Episode 26: Building Emotional Awareness with the RAIN Method

What if the moments we feel the most overwhelmed as parents are actually invitations to understand ourselves more deeply? In this episode of Parenting Through Connection, I share the power of emotional awareness in parenting and how learning to recognize, allow, investigate, and nurture our feelings can completely shift the way we respond to our kids, and to ourselves. Instead of reacting from stress, I explore how we can build a more intentional, compassionate approach that strengthens connection, even in the hardest moments. Here’s what I get into: Managing our behaviour vs. actually understanding our emotionsUsing the RAIN method as a simple, practical tool to help pause and respond instead of react in overwhelming momentsWhy pushing emotions away actually fuels more reactivityWhat your hardest parenting moments might be revealing underneath the surfaceHow building a habit of self-compassion can prevent emotional build-up and create more ease in your day-to-day parentingPlease share this episode with a fellow parent who could use it. Remember that every small moment of awareness leads to deeper connection and the key is to take things one moment at a time.  If you’d like to go deeper in building emotional awareness, check out my Making Sense of Emotions Guide.  Support the show Connect with Megan: Website: https://www.parentingthroughconnection.ca/ Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/parentingwithmegan Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/parentingwithmegan Rooted in the Middle program: https://www.parentingthroughconnection.ca/rooted-in-the-middle 1:1 Coaching: https://www.parentingthroughconnection.ca/coaching

Episode 25: The Simple Shift That Can Diffuse Power Struggles With Kids

Power struggles are something almost every parent experiences, and if you’ve ever found yourself in a back-and-forth battle with your child, you are not alone. In this episode of Parenting Through Connection, I share how these moments, while exhausting and frustrating, are also an opportunity to look a little deeper at what’s really going on beneath the surface. Often, it’s not just about the request itself, but about a deeper need for control, autonomy and feeling heard. When we begin to understand that, we can shift out of opposition and into collaboration. Instead of focusing on shutting things down, we can start approaching these moments in a way that reduces tension, strengthens connection, and still allows us to hold the boundaries that matter. In this episode, I explore: Why power struggles happen and how they are rooted in nervous system responses and a need for controlHow quickly saying “no” can escalate stress for both you and your childA simple but powerful shift from shutting down requests to exploring what skills are needed to make them possibleHow this approach helps your child feel heard while still maintaining clear and consistent boundariesReal-life examples like bedtime and screen time, and how to turn those moments into opportunities for growth and learningWhy collaboration reduces the “us vs. them” dynamic and strengthens your relationshipHow this strategy builds long-term skills, responsibility, and independence in your childIf this episode resonated with you, share it with a parent who might be feeling stuck in those power struggles right now! Episode 24: Looking Beneath Behaviour: The 5 Domains of Stress

I’m a firm believer that the behaviours that challenge us most in parenting are actually signals asking for something deeper to be seen. In this episode, I explore a powerful shift in perspective that can transform how we understand both our children and ourselves. Instead of focusing solely on the behavior itself, I unpack the idea that stress is often the real story underneath our reactions. Drawing from Stuart Shanker's self regulation framework, I share how recognizing what’s happening beneath the surface can help us move from being frustrated and closed off, to open and connected.  In this episode, I explore: The stress that hides beneath the surface of our actionsHow biological stress like hunger, fatigue, and sensory overload can push kids (and parents) past their limitsHow cognitive overload from school, schedules, and constant demands can impact behaviour and focusThe impact of social stress from friendships, family dynamics, and the pressure to belongWhat pro-social stress looks like when children want to do the right thing but don’t yet have the skills to navigate itWhen we start looking at behaviour through the lens of stress rather than judgment, parenting begins to feel less reactive and more compassionate. If this perspective resonates with you, leave a like and share this episode with a fellow parent.
