    Radar: Jah Wobble

I recently spoke with Jah Wobble, bassist, composer and tireless pursuer of all things true. Born John Wardle in Stepney, East London, he got his name from a drunk Sid Vicious who couldn’t quite say it. In 1978 he wrote the bassline that became “Public Image,” and his dub-heavy playing anchored PiL’s first two albums, including Metal Box. He left in 1980 and never stopped moving. He went on to work with Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit of Can, The Edge, Brian Eno and Bill Laswell, and with his band Invaders of the Heart he had a top 40 hit with Sinéad O’Connor on “Visions of You,” from the Mercury-nominated Rising Above Bedlam. We talk about all these things as they relate to his world and life views. Jah is a deeply grounded and spiritual human and approaches all he does from a perspective of music as art and gateway to higher realms. This is a long listen grounded in this point of view. His newest record is Mystic Liverpool: The Beatles’ Psychedelic Songbook with Tian Qiyi, out now. On November 13, Dimple Discs reissues The Usual Suspects, the long unavailable 2xCD set first released in 2017. It has 23 tracks cut live in the studio at The Smokehouse in East London, revisiting PiL, Invaders of the Heart and his solo catalogue. There are also covers of the Midnight Cowboy and Get Carter themes and Dawn Penn’s “You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)” with Aurora Dawn. Wobble said the band behind it made a 35 year old dream come true: groovy, dubby and never standing still. Catch Jah Wobble & The Invaders of the Heart live this fall in the UK and Belgium: Frome, The Tunnels (Oct 21), Bristol, The Fleece (Oct 22), Reading, Face Bar (Oct 23), London, Bush Hall (Nov 7), Hasselt, Club AFF (Nov 25), Bruges, Cactus Muziekcentrum (Nov 26) and Oudenaarde, Harmonie (Nov 27). Radar: Gerald Casale - Devo

Today on Radar - I recently spoke with Gerald Casale, co-founder of Devo and one of the architects of a band that turned the theory of de-evolution into one of the most conceptually rigorous acts ever encountered while also being wildly fun. Along with Mark Mothersbaugh and Bob Lewis, Casale built Devo out of Kent, Ohio in the early 1970s. Casale was a graduate student at Kent State on May 4, 1970, and witnessed the National Guard shootings that killed four students, two of whom he knew. That day shaped the worldview that de-evolution came from, and it runs through everything Devo has made since. We got into all of it: the origins of Devo, the band itself, politics, Kent State, his wine making, and his new solo work. In July he released the single and animated video "Just Do It!," the first track from his forthcoming solo album Wetiko. Built with satirical artist Max Papeschi and animator Maurizio Temporin, and co-written with composer Moimir Papalescu, the video is a blistering piece of political satire timed to America's 250th anniversary. We also talked about Devo's recent and upcoming touring, including the co-headlining Cosmic De-Evolution run with the B-52s, and what it means to be finding a new generation of fans this far into the story. Artist, provocateur, songwriter, director and winemaker. What an incredible life.  He joined Radar to talk about all of it. You can find all things Jerry at geraldvcasale.com and follow along with all upcoming Devo happenings at clubdevo.com and you can find Jerry and Devo across all social of course. Radar: A Certain Ratio

I recently spoke with Jez Kerr and Martin Moscrop of A Certain Ratio. Jez and Martin talked about the new recordings, becoming A Certain Ratio and the early Hacienda days along with Joy Division plus future plans. And while they came up through Factory Records alongside all the classic acts that emerged in the late 70’s they built a sound out of funk bass, Afrobeat drums, brass, dub, and Latin percussion along with the angular edges of post-punk. This year marks two anniversaries: 45 years since they recorded Sextet, their 1982 third album that hit number one on the UK Independent Chart, and 40 years since Force, their 1986 fifth album and last for Factory. They're celebrating the anniversary with two companion releases, both just out via Mute. The Joy of Sextet is a new mix by Andy Meecham (The Emperor Machine), pulled from the original 1981 two-inch multitracks. Force Majeure is a nine-track set built around four-track recordings made by the late Stuart James, including an unreleased version of the title track. In October they tour the UK playing both albums in full You can find ACR across all social and at www.acrmcr.com. Follow along for tour dates and all ACR happenings.  ICYDNK: Dylan Hundley is an artist and performer. Radar: Cabaret Voltaire - Stephen Mallinder

I recently spoke with Stephen “Mal” Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire, the Sheffield group that helped invent the sound of British electronic and industrial music. Formed in 1973 with Chris Watson and the late Richard H. Kirk, Cabaret Voltaire stands alongside Throbbing Gristle and Clock DVA as a pioneer of the late-70s and 80s experimental underground, fusing tape manipulation, found sound, early synthesizers, and confrontational visuals into something no one had heard before. Records like the 1979 single "Nag Nag Nag" and 1980's "Three Mantras" drew from Dadaist provocation and post-industrial Britain, rejecting rock orthodoxy in favor of pure experimentation, and in doing so shaped industrial music, post-punk, EBM, and club culture itself. Across five decades Mallinder has carried that vision forward, through the band's own Western Works studio and Doublevision video label, through collaborations with producers like Adrian Sherwood and Marshall Jefferson, and into his own work as an artist, writer, and academic.  Cabaret Voltaire recently announced the long-awaited remastered reissue of "Code," their 1987 eighth album and most commercially successful record, out of print for years and newly remastered from the original tapes by Denis Blackham. The reissue was begun in 2019 with Richard H. Kirk before his death and completed from his notes, a fitting tribute to his legacy. "Code" arrives October 9th on Mute, on limited "CODIFIED" marble vinyl, deluxe triple CD with two bonus discs of remastered and unreleased remixes, and digitally, led by the John Robie dub mix of "Thank You America." They also recently released a live album, What Time is it Really?, recorded during the first leg of the current tour in the UK which can be found exclusively through the band's BandCamp and their own imprint. In 2025 Mallinder and Chris Watson marked 50 years since the band's first live performance, and that run continues into 2026 with their final tour. You can catch Cabaret Voltaire on their Final UK Tour, starting October 10th at Birmingham Town Hall and finishing October 25th at the Sheffield Octagon, with Gazelle Twin as special guest. They’ve also recently released a live album, What Time is it Really?, recorded during the first leg of the current tour in the UK which can be found exclusively through the band's BandCamp and their own imprint. So, if you miss a show on this current tour (do not recommend) you can still enjoy the sounds via this exclusive release (recommend). ICYDNK: Dylan Hundley is an artist and performer. Radar: Robyn Hitchcock

I recently spoke with Robyn Hitchcock, a songwriter who has spent nearly five decades treating the surreal as ordinary and the ordinary as suspect. He came up with The Soft Boys in Cambridge in the late seventies, out of step with punk and closer to the Doors and Syd Barrett than anything happening around them. Underwater Moonlight went nowhere at the time and became one of the most influential records of its era. He has been prolific ever since, solo and with the Egyptians and the Venus 3, writing about insects, weather, death and the small absurdities of life with a sharp eye, wit and wonderful humanity. The Confuser arrives July 24 on Tiny Ghost Records, his 25th studio album and first collection of all-new songs in close to four years. He recorded it in Nashville with Brad Jones and Jordan Lehning, backed by session players including guitarist Jeremy Fetzer, bassist Todd Bolden and drummer Eric Slick. Kimberley Rew, his co-founder in The Soft Boys, plays on four tracks. Gillian Welch sings on "Ghost in Sunlight." Johnny Marr heard the single "How To Feel Alright" and called it Bo Syddley, which is about right. Robyn kicks off an extensive UK and EU tour in October including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Dates, records, books, ideas at robynhitchcock.com. ICYDNK: Dylan Hundley is an artist and performer. She is the lead singer and co-creator of Lulu Lewis, and the creator of all things at Darling Black, one woman brutalist synthpop. Radar: Sally Timms - The Mekons

I recently spoke with Sally Timms, co-lead singer of The Mekons since 1985, the year she stepped into the band on their breakthrough album "Fear and Whiskey." The Mekons formed in Leeds in 1976 under Jon Langford and Tom Greenhalgh and have outlasted nearly every other band to emerge from that same British punk explosion, shapeshifting through country, folk, dub, and art-punk without ever settling into one shape for long. Before joining, Timms recorded the experimental film score "Hangahar" with Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks in 1980 and fronted the all-female outfit the Shee Hees. Timms has run a parallel solo career the whole time, moving between lo-fi electronics and alt-country with releases including "Someone's Rocking My Dreamboat," "To the Land of Milk and Honey," "Cowboy Sally's Twilight Laments for Lost Buckaroos," and "In the World of Him," a record of songs written by men, sung from their perspective. Her song "Horses" was later covered by Will Oldham. The Mekons are currently touring behind "Horror," a new record on Fire Records built around what they're calling horror-folk, tackling imperial legacies with the same nerve they've had since 1976. Catch them in the UK this fall at The Prince Albert in Brighton on October 22 and The Garage in London on October 23. She and Langford also just played Mini-Mekons at Solid Sound Festival, stripped down and acoustic, mining the deep dark Mekonic lake for classics and rarities. A voice that's been called intimidating and a sweetheart in the same breath. She joined Radar to talk about all of it. ICYDNK: Dylan Hundley is an artist and performer. She is the lead singer and co-creator of Lulu Lewis, and the creator of all things at Darling Black, one woman brutalist synthpop. She curates and hosts Salon Lulu, a New York-based multidisciplinary performance series, and is also a cast member of the cult-classic New York film Metropolitan.

Radar: Adi Newton - Clock DVA

Adi Newton is a founding figure of British experimental music whose work has shaped the genre for nearly five decades. Before founding Clock DVA and TAGC/The Anti Group in 1978, he was one of the original members of The Future, the project that evolved into The Human League. Clock DVA stands alongside Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire as a pioneer of late-70s and 80s experimental sound, with releases like the 1980 debut "Thirst" on Fetish, named by Paul Morley in his NME review as one of the best debut albums of the decade, and the 1988 electronic landmark "Buried Dreams." Through TAG, a shifting collective working under his direction, Newton has pushed into extreme electronic territory with works like the ambisonic "Digitaria" and the Test Tones series. His art has been presented at ARS Electronica Linz, the V&A London, and the Reina Sofía in Madrid. He describes music-making as research, guided by intuition and arcane, occult, and futuristic knowledge. Adi remains very busy working in all these projects and performing live with Clock DVA and TAG. CLOCK DVA recently released the 45th Anniversary reissue of Thirst, remastered and out on double “Thirst-Red” vinyl, CD and digitally via The Grey Area of Mute.  You can find Clock DVA at The Free and Easy Festival in Munich on August 2nd. You can find TAG at a very special London Interzone three day series where he will be performing with Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire The event is described as  “a three-day convergence of radical theory, sound, recognising the ongoing impact of the works of US writer William S. Burroughs and the Beat Generation, with London as a primary historical and contemporary nexus point for the American avant-garde.”  Painter, sonic and kinetic engineer, pataphysical pantheist, existentialist super-naturalist traveler. He joined Radar to talk about all of it.

    Radar: White Hills

I recently spoke with Dave W. and Ego Sensation of White Hills. For nearly two decades, White Hills have been gifting us with a unique mix of neo-psychedelia, art rock, and post-punk. Their first release was shepherded by Julian Cope, you've seen them in Jim Jarmusch's sultry vampire romance Only Lovers Left Alive as the band in the Detroit club, and they've collaborated with Martin Bisi often. They are both consummately New York while also holding the borderless spirit of all true artists. The duo has toured vigorously since their inception and have recorded over fifty releases, which include 12 full-length studio albums and numerous collaborations, EPs, and live records. The latest, Leave This World Behind, came out in March on their own label, Heads On Fire Industries. Five tracks built around a Sonic Rituals live series they're performing through 2026. We talked about how Dave and Ego met, the birth of the band, and the deeply grounded and spiritual point of view that this light filled and heavy music is born of. You'll be able to catch them in San Francisco on June 7th for the second of their Sonic Rituals this year. A deluxe vinyl edition of rarities entitled Collected Consciousness will arrive in the fall via Argonauta Records, with a new full length coming in early 2027. Follow them at @whitehillsmusic on Instagram and on the web to keep up with the heavy spirit engine. ICYDNK: Dylan Hundley is an artist and performer. She is the lead singer and co-creator of Lulu Lewis, and the creator of all things at Darling Black, one woman brutalist synthpop.
