I took the overnight sleeper train, explored Sapa town, rode the cable car up Fansipan, trekked through the famous rice terraces, visited remote mountain villages, and spent the night with a local family. I booked a VIP sleeper bus from Sapa to Ninh Binh, which meant fewer bunks, more space, and hopefully a chance to actually get some sleep. The adventure started before I even got on the bus. I had to figure out the Sapa bus station, find the correct bus, take off my shoes, and immediately got yelled at because I still had dirt on my pants from trekking through the rice terraces. Once we got moving, I checked out my sleeper bunk, tried to get comfortable, and attempted to sleep through the driving and nonstop honking. Along the way, we stopped at local Vietnamese rest stops, checked out the sleeper bus bathroom, and I even tried some late-night chicken pho. After about eight hours on the road, I finally arrived in Ninh Binh. So, are Vietnam sleeper buses actually comfortable—or are they torture? The first section was filled with incredibly fresh fruits and vegetables, but things quickly got more intense when I reached the meat and fish sections. There were live fish, black chickens, raw meat sitting out without refrigeration, and fish being prepared right in the middle of the market. At one point, fish blood and guts were being poured directly into the walkway—and straight onto the path I was walking through. But this Sapa market was about much more than food. The deeper I explored, the bigger it got. I found spices, clothes, shoes, toys, household goods, cafes, and seemingly everything else you could need. It was one of the most interesting local markets I visited in Vietnam. Some of the food looked incredibly fresh, while other parts were definitely tough on the stomach. On the final day of my two-day Sapa trek with my local guide, Khu, we continued through the countryside and got an even closer look at everyday life in northern Vietnam. Along the way, I visited a local school, learned how rice and corn were traditionally processed, saw traditional instruments and weaving techniques, and even tried the village's version of a "local gym." We also explored Tả Van village, stopped at a local market, passed more incredible rice terraces, and finished the trek at a beautiful waterfall. What started as a hike through Sapa turned into one of the most authentic experiences of my Vietnam trip. She opened her home to me for the night and gave me the chance to experience what daily life is really like in a mountain village in northern Vietnam. I toured the homestay, helped prepare a traditional Vietnamese dinner, ate with Khu and her family, tried rice wine, and learned how everyone in the family contributes to cooking and daily life. After spending the night, I woke up to a homemade breakfast before packing up and continuing my Sapa adventure. Staying with a local family was one of the most authentic experiences of my Vietnam trip and an unforgettable way to experience Sapa beyond the typical tourist attractions. Along the way, we stopped at small villages, tried fresh Vietnamese sugarcane, talked about dating life in Vietnam, and enjoyed a huge lunch made with local ingredients. I also got to see how traditional indigo dyeing is done before crossing a massive bridge high above the river.
